After her class Sally decided she needed to go back up to the roof. Hanging out with Megan again was great, but it was hard for her to be as happy as the other girl. She just needed to think, and what better place than somewhere no one would find her?
Sally got to her window and opened it, putting one foot on the sill before she heard footsteps coming and quickly closed the window. Sally let out a sigh as she turned around, just expecting a passing Gryffindor. She certainly wasn't expecting to see her best friend.
--
Wayne's dream had been eye opening. Maybe it was just the dream. Maybe it was the dream and his new relationship with Justin. Regardless, Wayne was seeing things more clearly now. He understood why he had been upset and he knew how wrong he was.
The good thing about Sally was how predictable she was. Whenever she was upset she went to the same place. Wayne hand not needed to look much for Sally.
He wasn't going to giver her a chance to talk. If she started talking he'd lose what he wanted to say.
"For a really long time, I was in love with you. Honest." And he had loved her. Wayne knew that much was true. But loving Sally wasn't what had upset him so much. It was losing what he thought he was going to have with her. "I'm not anymore, but that's not the point. I thought that I lost this life I wanted with you, but I don't want. But that doesn't mean I don't want you in my life."
--
Sally opened her mouth to say something to Wayne before he started talking. But what he was saying made her change her mind rather quickly. He'd been in love with her? And what life was he talking about? The one she'd had in her dream with Harold?
Sally blinked slowly at him, still trying to process everything. "So, you were in love with me but not now you're not, and the reason we kept fighting was cause you thought you were losing this life with me that you don't really want?" Sally crossed her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow. It made a certain degree of sense, but Sally's mind was stuck on the fact that he said he'd been in love with her. That just...wasn't possible.
--
"Uhh yeah. Something like that." Okay so maybe if he had explained how he felt beforehand they could have saved themselves a lot of trouble.
"I didn't want to tell you. I knew--know you don't see me like that. I didn't want you feeling bad because you couldn't feel that way about me."
--
Sally titled her head at Wayne. "Um, alright." Sally raised her other
eyebrow. She was so confused, she didn't know what to say.
"Well, ok, yeah, I would've felt bad. But I would have rather felt bad
than to keep fighting with you. You should know that."
--
"I know you, Sal. If you thought I was heartbroken you would've done anything to make me happy. And then you would have been miserable." That is what Wayne had feared the most. That he was going to hurt her by telling her how he felt.
"But, I thought being with you would make me happy. That it was the one thing I needed to prove I was worth something. And it wasn't."
--
Sally bit her lip. He was right. She would've done anything, even pretending to have feelings for him, if it meant he was happy. "You are worth something. You don't need to be with me or anyone to know that." Sally uncrossed her arms, and sat down on the windowsill. Her head was starting to hurt.
--
"I know that now," he said quickly. And it had helped to have Justin want him for who he was, ink stains and all. "Sorry it took me awhile to figure it out."
Wayne hoped Sally could understand why it had been so hard for him. He thought Harold had stolen his only chance at happiness. He thought Sally bypassing him romantically was like saying he wasn't good enough. Okay, so he had gotten over it, but it took him a bit.
--
Sally nodded. She wasn't sure what to say now. Well, maybe she did. "So, are we going to be ok now? Since you don't love me and all." Sally raised her eyes to look at Wayne hopefully. She understood now, why he had been so against her and Harold. It made sense now. Sally patted the window sill next to her and smiled.
--
Wayne quirked a smile at her. "Maybe," he said and sat down next to her. "I mean, at least until I get all my stuff back. Which could take another fifty years because I know I'm going to have to fight you for my hoodies."
Wayne wrapped an arm around her shoulders and squeezed gently.
--
Sally smirked at him and leaned into him. "Yeah, you'll be getting those back on my death bed. They're too comfy to give up." Sally let out a sigh and rested her head on his shoulder. At least one thing was better.
"You're happy with Justin right? I don't need to give him the best friend speech?" Speaking of Justin...She should apologize to him.
--
Wayne rested his head on top of Sally's and snorted. "Some people call that stealing, you know. Thief." Not that he wouldn't share them with her so long as she wanted them.
As for her question... "Yeah. I am. Really, really happy."
--
Sally shrugged awkwardly against him. "So I steal from you. What else is new?" She always had borrowed things from him for insane amounts of time. What did it matter really? As soon as he asked, it was back in his hands.
"Good. That's all that matters then." Sally smiled and wrapped her arms around Wayne's middle to give him a tight squeeze.
--
"So you want to go eat? I'm hungry." Wayne didn't really give her a chance to argue. "I'll let you have my dessert," he offered with a smile. She'd eat it anyway. They were like that when they were good.
--
Sally nodded eagerly. "Of course." Sally grabbed his hand and pulled him up, a huge smile on her face. This was normal. This is how they should've been all year long.
