The kitten had noticed Anthony first. He had dashed off of Dorcas' side to hide behind her knees. His black ears were folded back and he was watching Anthony with large brown eyes that seemed to be somewhere between curious and terrified. It said quite a lot that Romeo hadn't just run away and hidden under a chair which was his normal method of being around the other students that weren't Dorcas.
Automatically she reached out, sort of hoping the voice belong to Michael as she brought herself out of the nightmare but... No, it was Anthony. She wasn't disappointed per say - okay maybe she was a little in the back of her mind. Either way she reached out to touch his shoulder just for the feeling of something, someone solid. Solid was good. Solid was real. It was not the fluidity of a dream that she couldn't stop, that broke her at every turn.
"Yes. Yes he can. He's always there. Watching me with those black eyes. Always there. Always," her breath came in short bursts and if she wasn't careful, she was going to hyperventilate. That would just be no good. "He's always smiling at me with those sharp teeth. Even when he's bashing my face in. Smiling. The bastard's smiling." Honestly, Dorcas had no idea who the creature was in her dream. It would have been easier if it weren't a metaphor as dreams often were. What or who was that thing...
