The secured Floo channel to Azkaban had been set up in the middle of a large, circular, room. The walls were stone, eight feet thick, layered with charms to resist fire, reducto or other penetration. In the centre of the room was a secondary chamber, in which a fireplace had been constructed for this very purpose. The inner chamber locked only from the outside, to prevent sabotage, should a witch or wizard pass through from the other side free from their restraints. Each time the Floo channel was used, the connection was destroyed following the transfer, and a new connection would need to be formed, a set of wizards on the side of the prison, and a set on the side of the Ministry of Magic. Azkaban Aurors would open the channel into the prison, the wizards on the other wise would guide it to the Ministry. It had been performed hundreds of times, and the wizards from the Department of Magical Transportation were well drilled in all possible outcomes. Failure to make the connection would result in immediate high alert, communication channels with Azkaban would be opened to ensure no prisoner had freed themselves or catastrophe had occurred to prevent the channel being opened. Today the Ministry were taking no chances. All unassigned witches and wizards from the DMLE squads were posted around the outer chamber, taking shifts to keep watch and prevent sabotage. Carrow would be under lock and key in a secured holding cell with three guards on watch at all times. The holding cell was so deep within the Ministry that reaching it from the outside would be almost impossible without knowing exactly where it was. Today, the Ministry were taking no chances. The deputy head of the Department of Magical Transportation, Philip Linton, arrived at 10.45pm. The elevator's golden cage door opened and he stepped out, expressionless. This was an important occasion. The first of the Death Eater Trials after the Second Wizarding War - this was paramount. He flashed his badge and handed over his wand for assessment and proof of person. He stepped up to the inner chamber and indicated to the door. "I intend to perform the final checks myself." The door was opened and he stepped inside. The heavy bolts were slid back across, and everyone in the room held their breath as the single clock ticked it's way up to 11pm. Tick. Tick. Tick. Eleven. And that's when the inner chamber exploded. |
