Rowan held the blooms in delicate hands, the last remnants of a season past--or maybe the first signs of its coming--as she gazed upon the fields of markers. The rows and rows of the dead spread out before her, nicely cut little lanes of earth where beneath existed the non-shapes of once-humans. The earth stank of death, though it wasn't a smell she could inhale so much as she could simply feel it. It was there, in that place between her eyes. It was in her knowing, an intangible feeling, a certainty that bad things had happened and the world was weeping where a hole had been made in its fabric.
The result of so much death. A concentrated loss of energy, where the vibrancy of souls had been stripped away by main force. It was worse in the Great Hall, it was worse in the corridors. It was worse where they died, not where they were buried.
"It's all right to be angry," Rowan said gently, as she stepped through the arch and into the cemetery. "What was done was unfair to everyone." Balancing the blooms in one arm, she pulled her gloves from her fingers and stuffed them into her cloak pockets. The cold made her fingers numb but she paid it no mind, pushing her discomfort away to a safe place.
"We haven't forgot you. It's just too soon and too real for some. You ought forgive them for not coming. You ought let go of what was and go on.. it would hurt less." There was no tangible presence, no identifiable other, just a girl talking to the graves and the shapeless had-beens of yesterday. She smiled faintly at the markers around her and moved steadily to place a red bloom on top, one at a time, admiring the stark contrast of red on snow.
"I'm not supposed to be here, I'm not supposed to walk alone. They say it isn't safe, but I know none of you would hurt me. You can't anymore.. and I've saved these, but there's not enough for everyone. I'm sorry. But when I have more, I'll come back. I promise."
