Terminator SCC: Iron in Her Soul
Title: Iron in Her Soul
Fandom: Terminator
Spoilers: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, season one
Disclaimers: Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (RIP) belongs to whoever holds the rights. Title is from a quotation by Jeanette Winterson, as far as I can track it down: "There is iron in her soul on those days. She smells like a gun."
The rift between Derek Reese and his brother was the size of a picture. Sarah Connor's picture. Ever since John gave it to Kyle, nothing had been the same. Nothing could be the same between brothers with a woman between them, a woman neither had met.
When Kyle didn't come back, Derek wondered if it was because of her. Maybe they got away from the metal, settled down, created the roots of the Resistance in some dusty nowhere town where John would have an entire desert as his backyard.
And then it was Derek's turn to slice through time, and Sarah wasn't just some woman in a picture anymore. She's prettier than that goddamn snap Kyle carried—prettier than a diamond and just as hard. And it makes him wonder what she was like before. With Kyle. Was she softer then? Gentler? Was it the spectre of Skynet and John's destiny that carved her so close to the bone, or was it her own fate? Did she have any give to her into those days, or was she always so practical? Some people look like their pets. Sarah looks like her guns: sleek, unrelenting, dangerous. How did she ever pass as a waitress in a diner with her eyes the colour of calculated murder and fingers more accustomed to holding weapons than the weekend special?
Derek wonders what Kyle would think of his Lady Luck now. He wonders how she'd be different if he had been the one sent back instead of his brother. He wonders who Sarah is really calling for when she whispers Reese at night.
Kyle got the legacy, and he died for it. Now Derek gets the picket fence, the baseball games and hard explanations, the nights spent strategizing and cleaning weapons. Would he trade? Would Kyle?
Would Sarah?
