Only after another Slytherin explicitly pointed out what's what to the Gryffindor, does s/he realize what's happening in the relationship.
An old tree at the Malfoy Manor ground suddenly lost all its flowers. For the first time in centuries the tree does not bear fruit. Lucius/Narcissa took it as a sign that the Malfoy line will end with Draco.
