It was warm in Enna, as a soft breeze blew across the fields, rustling the tall grasses and flowers as several nymphs ran through, hair twined with leaves of oak and laurel, short chitons waving in the wind. The youthful maiden spring goddess followed behind them, walking through the fields and picking flowers, plucking them with care, assembling a bouquet of white violets and lilies, larkspur and roses. There were so many flowers that day, copious quantities of blooms at which Kore marveled.
The sun had long since reached its zenith, was nearing the tree-line, but not quite there yet, in late afternoon, and Demeter's daughter peered around, making sure that no one took notice as she slowly distanced herself further from the group, lagging behind, taking one step when they took two, plucking extra flowers, ducking back, anything to relish a few moments of solitary freedom from their watchful eyes. She walked further, beyond a bend, and into a clearing, spotting a most curious flower, made to grow there as a snare, by Gaia at the behest of the maiden's own father. She approached, running a hand through her long dark hair, wound in light loose ringlets into which flora were intertwined, no longer bouncing from her skipping through the fields.
Kneeling down, she peered at it astutely, perusing it with interest as she took in each and every detail of it, from its white petals to the golden, yellow-to-orange fading center of it, the corona, or trumpet. She traced a finger over and noted the soft texture, the way it was an herbaceous perennial, how the monocot grew from a bulb, the entire thing a neat little diagrammatic picture in her head. It was the perfect lure, really.
Carefully, she reached out and plucked it, tucking it behind her ear, smiling, though the smile was short-lived.
At that instant, the ground shook, and a noise such that she'd never heard before rang out through the air. Kore looked around, confused, with no one else in sight.
