The Founders
Title:The Founders
Rating:PG
Summary:The Sorting Hat tells the Founders some bad news.
Finally the door closed and the Sorting Hat let out a long sigh. So, one of his mistresses possessions was a Horcrux for the Dark Lord of all people! And Dumbledore and just left to find one of the Horcruxes . Oh, he hoped it was the cup.
He was almost finished with the last verse of the new song for the next year when Harry Potter went in to talk to Dumbledore. They had just left and the Sorting Hat was glad for some peace and quiet; that Potter boy was very loud. The Hat thought that he should tell Helga at once about her object.
Out thin air the four founders appeared before the Hat. Godric and the others took a good look about the room. They had been brought here like that a few times before when the Sorting Hat had something important to tell them; it was very different from the last. All of the pictures of the headmasters and headmistresses all awoke at once and began talking to the founders.
"Hello, Godric! Long time no see!"
"Oh, Miss Hufflepuff, I was in your house! Do you remember?"
"We hardly ever have any Slytherins that match up to your power."
"Have you heard of Hermione Granger? She could have been in your house you know."
Godric held up his hand and all the pictures quieted. After a look of agreement from the other founders, he spoke. "Yes, it is quit good to see you all again! But I believe we can chat later." He turned to the Sorting Hat. "Sorting Hat, have you something of importance to tell."
The Hat moved a bit and his leather mouth curled into a frown. "Sadly, yes, Godric, I do. It has to do with you Helga."
A short woman with curly blonde hair and bright blue eyes stepped back in surprise. "Me? What of?"
The Sorting Hat let out a sigh and after a long pause it said, "You cup is in the possession of someone very important."
Helga let an "awww" and was looking at the others excitedly. Rowena smiled brightly and clasped her hands together. She was happy for her friend.
"Is it here?" Helga asked. "Is it here in the office? Is it perhaps next to Godric's old sword?"
Salazar sneered. "It is not here, Helga, as you can see plainly. Look!" He pointed to the sword with many shining rubies encrusted in it.
"Who has it then?" Rowena asked.
"Voldemort," The Hat said sadly. There was gasp from Helga and mutterings from the two men. The founder of Ravenclaw was silent. Godric cleared his through and asked, "Why does he have it? What use would it be for him?"
So, then the Sorting Hat told them the long tale of how Voldemort had taken possession of the cup and his Horcruxes, and of Harry Potter boy and Dumbledore going off to find one of the Horcruxes. There was some amazement that it was Roweena's cup that was in use, but no surprises about Voldemort splitting his soul.
"It sounds just like him" Salazar said. "I used to watch him sneaking around the Slythrin common room looking for ways into my chamber. If only he had used his fine skills for good!"
"That's what we all wish when someone from our school does bad, " said Helga quietly.
"But what are we going to do?" Rowena exclaimed. "Surely there must be some way we can help. Remember when Harry pulled Godric's sword of out the Hat?"
"Yes!" Helga looked hopeful. "But maybe we could use the cup to help Harry."
"No, no, no," Salazar said. "The reason the sword came out of the Hat for Harry was because he was a true Gryffindor. He's not a Hufflepuff."
Rowena's eyes brightened. "How about Dumbledore's Army? Surely there must be some Hufflepuffs in that."
"But it doesn't exist anymore!" Helga said. "It stopped at the end of last year."
They all looked at Godric.
"Godric,"Helga said quietly. "Do you know what we should do?
"No," he said.
"No?"
"What do you mean?
"You don't have an idea?"
"Yes, I do have an idea." They couldn't tell what his emotions were, but they knew he knew what the right thing to do. "He has to do it on his own. Harry must face this all on his own. And in that is the only way Voldemort will be destroyed. "
