For the LotR chapter title challenge at fic_inspiration!
Sun shining brightly and the birds chirping happily... anyone would have thought this would be a day for joy and merriment. It was not so. Little over an hour ago Frodo had boarded one of the last ships with Gandalf and the elves and began his journey to the Blessed Isle.
The remaining Hobbits rode their ponies dejectedly back home; even the ponies seemed sad. Sam's face, like the others, was red and wet with tears, and his eyes were puffy. He understood why Frodo had to leave, but in his mind the question `Why?' kept popping up, making him cry all over again. After all he and Frodo had been through, he just couldn't believe that Frodo had left Middle-Earth forever, never to return. Sam would look behind him, hoping Frodo had come back.
Pippin patted Merry's shoulder trying to comfort his cousin, but knew it would do no good. He needed comforting, too, and neither of them could offer it to the other. Pippin wiped his eyes and looked over at Merry.
"Do you suppose we'll be the only ones left?" Pippin asked.
Sam stared at Pippin. "What do you mean?"
"I mean, Gandalf and Frodo left. Aragorn's king. Legolas is sure to leave to the Sea, too, some day. I don't know about Gimli; he might go with Legolas since they're such good friends. The Fellowship is breaking apart. I'm just wondering if we'll be the only ones left."
Merry looked at his cousin hard. "I don't know, Pippin. Maybe sometime soon, all three of us can go to Gondor and visit the others."
Sam shook his head. "No. I can't go. Not with Rosie and Elanor and all."
"I see your point about Rosie and the babe. I'll be the Master of Buckland one day, and Pippin'll be Thain, and that's not stopping me. Is it stopping you, Pip?"
"No," Pippin replied. "I want to be in touch with Gondor as often as possible."
"And I with Rohan."
No one said anything after that for a while. A cool breeze blew by, reminding the hobbits of the harbor with it sea air and calling gulls. Reminding them of Lady Galadriel wearing her white dress, smiling with a twinkle in her eye. Elrond helping Bilbo onto the ship, who was excited about a new adventure and of things to come. Gandalf gesturing for Frodo to join him, and Frodo giving his last wave before stepping onto the ship.
On the Sea, Frodo looked out at the cool blue water, enjoying the wind on his face. Bilbo sat near by, telling his stories of his adventures to a company of Elves, who were happy to please the old hobbit. Frodo smiled at his `uncle.'
"Come over here, my boy!" Bilbo called. "I could use an extra mind to tell these fine folk my story."
Frodo shook his head. "No, you go right on, Bilbo. Your mind is doing quite well on its own, as it always has."
Bilbo grinned and continued telling how surprised he had been by thirteen dwarves suddenly appearing on his doorstep.
Sighing, Frodo turned back to look at the water before him. Even on a ship full of people, he felt very small and lonely; very lonely without his Sam.
And Sam felt very lonely without his Frodo.
