It had been four days since the Battle of Hogwarts and Kingsley Shacklebolt had barely gotten fifteen hours of sleep. He'd slept seven hours Saturday night in his new office stretched out on a too-short hammock that had been around the Ministry since the seventies, his house having been burnt to the ground months ago. His office was warded to the nines since despite the victory, he wasn't ready to trust the world yet. Seven hours of sleep after being awake for nearly thirty-five hours straight wasn't close to being enough, but it was all he could afford. The next two nights had averaged not even five hours each, but Kingsley shrugged it off when Gawain Robards expressed concern. There were more important things than Kingsley's sleep, things that wouldn't wait. The Ministry was severly understaffed. The holding cells in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement were nearly full, the hospital was overfull, and though Kingsley knew being Minister for Magic meant that he was in charge of things, he didn't realise that he would be in charge of everything. There were very few department heads left after Voldemort supporters were arrested and though those who had been run out of their jobs were offered them back, it would take time even if the people were able to come back. Gawain and the other Aurors who were left were doing their best, but they didn't have all the manpower needed for the investigation into the battle, and Gawain still looked to Kingsley for a lot of guidance - with the Ministry in the shape it was, nearly all the rules and procedures had to be thrown out the window and they needed to start from scratch. Percy Weasley had agreed to help Kingsley out, but the new Minister wouldn't let him keep away from his family to long - he'd been without them enough. He'd hesitantly agreed to it - though only a few hours a day. "I got the list on my desk, Perce," Kingsley said, having just come back from another floor discussing the issue of the full holding cells. He'd decided to go to the funeral of every person who died that night fighting against Voldemort and the Death Eaters if he was able, not just in his capacity as Minister for Magic but as a member of the Order of the Phoenix who fought alongside the students. He'd arranged the Ministry to send large bouquets of flowers to each family, but it wasn't enough for him. "A few I've missed - or will have to miss - can you get me the names and addresses so I may write letters?" The two went over a few more things, making schedules and lists to keep themselves on track and finally Kingsley realised it was about time for him to head to one of the funerals. "One last thing before I go," he said, slipping some papers into his robe. "Remind me that when the Wizengamot is put back together that we need to start thinking about Order of Merlins. I think there'll be a lot to award." |
