Michael was barely aware of his surroundings as Professor Flitwick brought him to the Hospital Wing and placed him in one of the beds that had been vacant for the majority of the second half of the school year, save for the stupid Inquisitorial Squad. Flitwick had, thankfully, repaired all of the damage he could, but he pain from the Cruciatus Curse was still keeping him in a half-awake, half-asleep state in which the pain was somewhat easier to manage. Even the areas that Flitwick had charmed couldn't stop him from feeling the residual pain from the wounds that had been there previously, so the area between his shoulder blades and his collar bones burned excruciatingly. He'd already vomited twice, his body unable to deal with what was happening to him, but now he was still, a slight tremble the only movement he made. Bianca lingered before the closed Hospital Wing doors, anxiety causing her chest to clench. Morag's words repeated themselves over and over in her mind and, though she was clueless as to why he had been tortured in the first place, the very idea that the Carrows had tortured him even further after that horrible display at lunch left a bitter taste in her mouth. She was afraid of what she'd find inside, but there was no way she would allow Michael to be alone if she could help it. Nevermind that she was meant to be on rounds. Taking a deep breath, she opened the door and stepped inside. She felt a bit frantic as she swept her eyes from empty bed to empty bed, until she finally settled on Michael's and rushed to his side. "Oh, Michael," she whispered, leaning over him to peer down at his face. He looked horrible. It was unsettling seeing him like this and she dug her fingertips into the mattress instead of reaching for his hand. Michael blinked his eyes open, but Bianca's figure remained a blur to him as much as he tried to focus. He saw blond hair, and assumed it must have either been her or Morag -- they were the only two he could have imagined might come to see him when he was like this. If he had been more aware, he might have been embarrassed that anyone could see him in such a state, but fortunately, he was not coherent enough to feel anything that resembled modesty. After a moment, he closed his eyes again and let out a sigh. "Huh?" Frowning, though not at his incoherency and instead at the reason behind his incoherency, Bianca stepped back slightly. She still felt undeniably sad looking down at him, but she felt a surge of anger at his condition as well. The Carrows had absolutely no right to do this to anyone, no matter what trouble Michael may have caused. She clenched her hands into fists and just as quickly released them. There would be time for anger later, she supposed. "What happened?" she asked slowly, hoping her words might somehow manage to make it through whatever haze he seemed to be in. Unfortunately, it only slightly made it through the fog caused by his injuries. He heard her voice, but he couldn't understand what she was saying. Rather than respond, he simply opened his eyes slightly and squinted at her, trying to draw her face into focus enough to tell who it was. He didn't have any luck, and slowly tried to move his arm toward her, grasping for her hand as much as the contact would hurt him. It would be comforting to know for sure that some one else was there, and he wasn't just imagining the whole thing. Panic was starting to build in Bianca's chest. She didn't know exactly how long it took to Cruciate a person into madness and, while the more logical part of her mind knew that this was more disorientation than madness, it still difficult not to indulge that small voice in her head that wondered if perhaps this was it for Michael. It was, after all, exactly what they'd threatened to do to Parvati. Her eyes gave a painful sting and she blinked hard against the sensation. She could be miserable later. For now, she was going to focus on him. She met his grasping hand halfway and gingerly placed her hand in his. "Please be okay," she murmured, even though she was starting to realise that he couldn't really understand her in his state. The sensation of her hand against his sent a jolting pain up the muscles of his arm, but he could barely manage a wince as the rest of his senses dulled even more. In spite of how much it hurt, Michael squeezed Bianca's hand in a way that he hoped would comfort her as well as himself. He was scared -- scared of what was going to happen to him when the Carrows realised that Professor Flitwick had tried to help him. Would they just torture him again? Maybe even worse? Thinking about it just made his head spin, thoughts coming kaleidoscopically. Even if his wounds had been healed, Flitwick hadn't been able to give him any potions and he'd lost a good deal of blood after the Carrows cut him. The effort of trying to make sense of things had strained him to about as far as his body could go. After a moment his grip on Bianca's hand loosened and the rest of his sense went dim as he passed out in the hospital bed. When Michael's grip loosened, Bianca lifted herself slightly from her seat to better peer down at his face, confirming that he had only passed out and not something far, far worse. She pressed her lips together tightly, resisting the overwhelming urge to shake him awake and demand he answer her questions. Why had they done this to him? What had they done to him? And just what had he done to make them angry? He couldn't possibly answer her anyway. She shifted in the chair so that she was sitting in the seat instead of on her legs, leaving her hand limply in his. She briefly considered leaving but in her mind it made more sense for her to stay, at least until the end of her rounds. After all, she would only return to her dorms and worry about him. Sitting with him and worrying about him seemed the easier of the two. She laid her head on the edge of the bed and tightened her hold on his hand. What would she do if he died? |
