This afternoon over lunch, Amycus Carrow announced that all afternoon classes would be canceled for a "special presentation" in the Great Hall. With a lop-sided grin on his face, he warned everyone that the Heads of House would be taking attendance, so don't bother try to skive off, because you will have a very special detention if you do. While students might look forward to an afternoon off, there was a sense of forboding in the Great Hall at the announcement. After lunch, students were given a half an hour break while the Great Hall was cleaned and set up for the event. At 1:30, when students were allowed back into the hall, the tables had been pushed up against a wall and hundreds of chairs had been set up facing the stage on which the professors' table usually sits. McGonagall, Flitwick, Sprout, and Slughorn took attendance for their respective Houses, though all of the professors (besides the Carrows, of course) seemed to have an air of irritation about them at having their classes canceled for whatever it was that the Carrows had planned. Once everyone was seated, Amycus amplified his voice and told everyone to settle down. "We have assembled you all here today," he said, "Since many of the students in the NEWT Dark Arts classes have been having some difficulty learning the Cruciatus Curse, my sister and I have decided to invite one of the leading experts on the curse to show you how it is done properly." As if on cue, the doors to the Great Hall swung open and silence descended as a tall, dark-haired woman swept through the room. A collective gasp seemed to echo throughout the hall as most students recognised Bellatrix Lestrange from The Daily Prophet and wanted posters hung in Diagon Alley. Her regal head held high and dressed in fine emerald green robes, she certainly looked healthier than she had on the wanted posters, and her collectedness seemed frighteningly sane. When she reached the stage, she amplified her voice, also, and said, "Hello, students of Hogwarts. Your kind professors have brought me here to demonstrate the proper use of the Cruciatus Curse. I have been told..." As she paused, her heavily-lidded eyes scanned the students in the Great Hall's faces, and a sly smile broke onto her face. "That some of you are unable to Cruciate even a simplistic, vile creature such as this jarvey." When she said this, Alecto produced a squirming, screaming jarvey. "No, you fuckers! Get your twatting hands off of me!" it cried, but Alecto merely cackled. (Bellatrix continued to look mildly amused.) Anyone close enough to see the jarvey well might have recognised it as Jeeves, Morag MacDougal's foul, furry friend. Alecto sat Jeeves down on a table and Bellatrix rolled up her sleeves and produced her wand. "CRUCIO!" she shouted, and Jeeves's screams pierced the Great Hall. After several bouts of the curse, she paused and told the students, "I don't think I've demonstrated the power of the curse to you yet. Shall I continue?" She then resumed torturing Jeeves. After what seemed like an eternity, she stopped, tucking her wand away. Though the curse had stopped, the jarvey was still screaming, frothing at the mouth, and cursing nonsensically. It was quite clear that Jeeves had lost his mind. "Now," Bellatrix continued as Alecto whisked Jeeves away. "Where is Neville Longbottom?" As soon as the words were out of her mouth, the Carrows rushed off to find Neville in the crowd and dragged him forcibly up onto the stage. "Poor Longbottom's parents met the same fate as that jarvey. Frothing and mad in St Mungo's for the rest of their worthless lives. Shall we see how their son likes it as well?" With that, she reproduced her wand and cast the Cruciatus Curse on Neville. On the orders of the Carrows, she did not hold long enough to do any lasting damage, but after several minutes of torturing Neville, she broke off, laughing shrilly. "Take him out of my sight. I can't stand the look of him," she told the Carrows, and Neville was returned to his seat. At that point, Bellatrix called upon three Slytherins to volunteer one student each to find out "what the Cruciatus Curse really feels like." She pointed out Pansy Parkinson, Vincent Crabbe, and Blaise Zabini, and asked each of them to choose a student for her to torture. Pansy, Crabbe, and Blaise chose Ginny Weasley, Zacharias Smith, and Eloise Midgen, respectively. Ginny, Zacharias, and Eloise were all pulled up on stage and tortured one at a time for a few minutes each. Pansy, Crabbe, and Blaise were allowed to remain in their seats and watch. Once she had finished with her victims, Bellatrix unrolled her sleeves and strode out of the Great Hall without saying a word. At that point, the Carrows told everyone that the demonstration was over and everyone was released. Please respond with your character's reactions to what happened in the Great Hall today, particularly if they were one of the "volunteers." |
