The last two trials were easy to ignore. That river place had plenty of space to roam around and kick rocks. The last two trials were a piece of cake. Sure he had to remember some stuff that pissed him off, like the way Nicco so carelessly shot that kid, but he could brush it off after punching through some shit. All in all, he could pass those ones.
This time was different.
World End clutched his stomach and staggered against the wall. His feet sloshed through the water in whatever abandoned subway he was wandering through. His hand slid against the decaying tiles and he stumbled to a knee. World End panted through grit teeth, digging his nails into his gut. “Nrrg… dammit!” He beat his fist against the wall. He felt nauseous, his stomach was twisting in countless knots. Each twist stabbed a new microscopic dagger into his organs. “Why do I have to be so damn hungry?!” He swore and slammed his fist again, breaking the tile it was on with a sharp clink. “Fuck!” World End drew his hand back, small shards of tile stuck out of his skin. Their edges were quickly growing crimson. His own blood beaded up around the wound before starting to drip down his wrist.
His mouth watered. His lip quivered. A low hissing echoed in the tunnel, wrapping around him like an endless blanket.
World End swallowed sharply and yanked the shards out of his hand before wiping it off on his white shirt. His stomach was filled with fear. What the fuck… I need to find something to eat. Goddammit. Fuck.. He stumbled up to standing and hurried through the tunnel. The hissing followed him through the tunnel, forcing him to walk faster. It grew louder and louder with his rising panic and he broke to a run. The water splashed and sloshed as he ran blinding through it, turning around tunnel after tunnel.
The fluorescent lights above him flickered, somewhere only hanging on by half of their wires. His own footsteps in the water echoed down tunnels he’d never taken. World End slammed into a railing and collapsed on it. He dug his nails into the rusty top rail. He groaned in anguish grabbing at his stomach again. “This is pointless! Dammit!” He pressed his forehead against the flaking paint. He squeezed his eyes shut so hard he saw static. His stomach growled loudly, rumbling underneath his hand. “Hahh…” World End sunk to his knees, sucking in breath. “I can’t just keep running like this. You have no idea where you’re going.” He mumbled to himself. He pressed as hard as he could on his stomach, trying to block out the sickening pains.
The hissing caught up to him. World End looked up, his belly sinking back into fear. Anxiety rose in his chest. No. No. No. Fuck. He glanced back at the tunnel behind him, where it was echoing so loudly. Then his head snapped between the two tunnels on his right and left. He scrambled to the right and started to run down that tunnel. Why the hell won’t that thing let up?! He ran, still with one arm pressing on his stomach. His gait was staggered and he used the wall to help him along. His stomach growled again, louder than before. He swore it echoed. The hissing got even louder. World End pushed himself to run faster.
His shoe caught on something under the water and he fell forward. He crashed into the water, catching himself with his hands. He pushed himself up, onto his hands and his knees. Filthy subway water dripped from his hair, the reflections of the lights casted dizzying patterns he could barely focus on. I’m going to have to fight it… I can’t keep running. I’m so hungry. Fuck I’m so hungry. World End closed his eyes as the world started to spin.
A scent caught his nose.
Sweet,
familiar,
delicious.
The hissing was in his ear. World End staggered to his feet, shuffling towards the source of the smell. His mouth watered, and his jaw hung with his fangs bared. His skin and clothes swirled with black marks, a pattern of an eye appeared on his side. The world around him dulled and grew fuzzy along the edges. He stumbled along the tunnels after the source of the smell with determination.
And he walked,
and walked,
and walked.
World End blinked and came to. His hands were covered in dirt and the mouth tasted bitter. Looking around, he saw that he was on a subway platform. Holes in the ceiling let streams of the setting sun scattered through. By his knees were the shredded remains of a plant. What kind it was he had no idea, small bruised petals littered the ground around his knees. He pulled another petal from his tongue. It was the same flower that Nicco had tattooed on his back. What the hell…? His stomach growled, twisting sharply. He cried out in pain and hunched over. What the hell did I eat?! World End pushed his forehead into the dirt, ignoring how it stuck to his sweaty skin. He inhaled deeply and wrapped both hands around his stomach. His stomach cramped up and he groaned painfully against the dirt.
A loud chirp echoed in the cave. His eyes flew open and he stared at the bird that landed not too far from him. Its blue plumage shimmered in the sunlight. He leapt towards it, his body moving without thinking. His hand hit the sunlight and he turned into a boar, only to charge forward. He snorted loudly, and the bird took off. World End jumped, transforming back into a human when his body left the sun. His fingers grazed the tail feathers of the bird. It fled out of the ceiling opening, while World End roared with anger.
His body was covered in tattoos again. The inky black marks swirled on his skin and clothes, covering him in a jagged pattern. “Hah… Hah…. Hahaggg…” He growled from deep within his gut. His eyes turned towards the hole in the ceiling and then around for a way out.
I’m so… fucking… hungry…
The crunch of something in his mouth was the next thing he remembered. Blood gushed down his chin as he tore a chunk of meat off of what he was holding. He was holding the bird. The reality of the grotesque situation didn’t even dawn on him, he just tore off another portion and gobbled it down greedily. World End licked the blood off his hands feverishly, panting like a child who’d chugged a whole glass of water. The tattoos were gone, shrunk down to just three triangles on his cheek.
He started to catch his breath while he sucked the last of the blood off of his fingers. He blinked a few times and then held his head. “What… the hell.. Where am I?” He looked around while he coughed a few times. “This is Italy.” He recognized the city. He wasn’t far from home. You mean that weird subway was in Italy? We don't have an underground subway like that. What the hell is going on? He wandered the empty city. All of the buildings looked abandoned, Italian graffiti littered walls he knew. The bakery on the corner was missing its windows, the door had graffiti that read “coward”.
What happened here? It’s like the whole city just got abandoned. He turned the corner and started to walk down the street to Nicco’s villa. It was more out of habit than anything. His foot stepped on the first stone of the sidewalk and pain shot up his side. “Ack!” He doubled over as his mouth watered, and with a hitched breath he threw up. His stomach twisted and cramped sharply. Tears formed in the corners of his eyes, and he wiped his mouth. On the ground at his feet was the remains of a bird mixed among pink lilies. “I ate a bird?!” His eyes widened as he remembered in horror. He hadn’t eaten animals like that in centuries. Fear pooled in his heart, I couldn’t control myself… I ate a bird. I shouldn’t be here. His heartbeat quickened and he took a step back. I really really shouldn’t be here. What if he ate Nicco? If he couldn’t control himself around a fucking bird then he’d eat him for sure.
“Illdio?” World End’s blood ran cold. He looked up and saw Nicco a few yards down the street. He was leaving a building, he knew it was a cafe, but the sign had long since been worn by the sun. “Illdio! Wait! Are you ok?!” Nicco started to run towards him. The hissing from the tunnels was back. He started to turn and run away, but he caught sight of his reflection. The hissing was coming from him. His tattoo stretched across his skin and clothes, peeling off of him and floating in the air like ribbons. I’m a monster...
Niccolo pulled on his arms to get him to face him, “You’re finally home! I need to talk to you! Are you ok? What happened?” Nicco looked worried. World End grit his teeth, the marks along his skin were gone. Like Nicco had snapped him back to reality. He hugged Nicco and buried his face into his neck. “Huh? Maialino?” Nicco smelled so good, he was wearing whatever floral cologne he usually did. World End couldn’t remember the name. He hugged his eve tighter, trying to push away the growing hunger in his stomach. “It’s ok.” Nicco spoke softly as he hugged him back around the waist.
World End opened his eyes, his mouth was watering again. He swallowed and stared hard at the sidewalk. Let go of him. You need to let go of him. He couldn’t get his arms to let go. His heart was racing. Bite him. Right there into his neck. The intrusive thought almost made him jump. What the fuck?! No. His stomach growled loudly. “Huh? Are you hungry? We can get you something.” Nicco started to move in his arms.
“No. Nicco… Just. Don’t move.” His voice came out more like a growl than he intended. He was gritting his teeth against the pain. World End buried his face in Nicco’s collar, and kissed it, “Please… amore, just don’t.” He could hear the hissing again, coming from deep deep in his head, like something else was there. Which he knew, he knew his demon would possess him again. World End took a deep breath and forced his hands off of Nicco. “I… I’m not ok right now. I’m- nnngh!” He held his stomach as it cramped and doubled over. The tattoos were back, crawling along his legs.
Eat him. Eat him. It’ll satisfy you! Eat him! World End covered his ears like it would block out the nagging voice inside his own head. He shot that boy! He shot the child! You were going to leave him! He’s already betrayed you! The memories of the gun shot echoed in the background of his mind. He could practically see Tetsu’s body on the ground. Eat him! Don’t you want this hunger to end? He wanted it to end. He grit his teeth, and his hands grabbed fistfuls of his hair. The hissing in his head was so loud, bouncing around his brain like his whole skull was a rattle. Shut up! Shut up! I can’t focus! I’m not going to eat him!
“Illdio!” Nicco’s hand touched his shoulder. World End threw it away and turned away from him. “What’s going on?! Talk to me…” Nicco pulled his hands close to his chest. World End looked at him, his face shadowed with emotions.
Devour it all! Yeah…. Devour it all. World End’s gaze glossed over. “Let’s eat!” He mumbled as the marks on his body moved on their own. A couple of them peeled off of his chest and shot out like a hand, grabbing Nicco by his throat. The hand pulled Nicco in where World End grabbed him with his own hands. He bit down on Nicco’s collar, where he’d kissed it moments before. Blood gushed from the wound and World End’s eyes rolled back with pleasure. For once his stomach stopped aching.
“Illdio! Stop it!” Nicco whimpered, but he didnt cry or scream. Not even when the two of them started to melt into an inky black. “Think about what you’re doing!” Nicco’s cries were lost to him as the world around World End melted alongside them. It wasn’t until World End’s empty hands hit the ground that it dawned on him what he’d done.
The decayed city he’d been in was gone. He was crouched over droplets of his eve’s blood and the realization he’d eaten him. World End sat back and looked at his shaky hands. The marks were gone, he could feel it; the tattoo was back to three diamonds, the demon inside him was calm. His hands grew blurry and tears stung his eyes. “Nicco….” he stared at his bloody hands while tears rolled down his cheeks. How… could I do that?! “DAMMIT!” World End clenched his hands into fists and slammed them into the ground.
Before they made contact he woke up, jolting up in his bed suddenly. Tears welled in his eyes and streamed down his cheeks “WHAT KIND OF FUCKING TRIAL WAS THAT?!” He threw the covers aside and jumped out of bed before kicking the whole mattress off his bed frame. World End threw the bedside table across the room after. “WHAT THE FUCK!” He crashed through the house more. The couch was overturned, chairs thrown, a pillow ripped apart. Lastly he crossed the kitchen and grabbed the table. He dug his nails into it to throw it, but saw where he’d duct taped it back together after he broke it last time telling Lawless about Old Child’s betrayal.
“Goddammit. You fucking asshole…” World End sank to his knees, crying harder now. All he could think about was how mad Nicco had been. He’d been ready to kill, a rare face for Nicco to make. “You goddamn asshole… Why? Why did it have to be you?” He cried against the floor. The taste of Nicco’s blood was still fresh in his mind, the memories of losing his fight against his demon even fresher. The minute he went back to their world he knew he’d try to eat Nicco. Was that the lesson? Was that what that trial wanted him to know? That there was no getting out of it? Because he already knew. He knew. The knowledge that he’d eat his eve for the first time haunted him.
After his tears finally left him, World End got up and went to the fridge. He picked it up and plugged it back in before he pushed it into place. He opened the freezer, all his ice had gone flying, but he fished out what was left of his ice cream. After he dug out a spoon and sat on the counter top. He pulled his phone out of his pajama pockets, where he’d forgotten to take it out before he went to bed and texted Lawless.
