Summary: Dinah meets the Red Canary. It doesn't go well.
Status: Complete
It had been a good day. One of the better days she'd had in as long as she could remember. She almost forgot about the Red Canary's issued 'invitation.' It hung in the back of her mind, but the day was mostly a blur of making up for lost time with Ollie. She didn't tell him because she'd just gotten him back and she'd be damned if she put him in danger now. Besides, this felt like something that she needed to do on her own. She needed to find out who this woman was and why she knew that name.
Fortunately, he seemed pretty worn out as the evening grew later. She had to smirk just a little bit once he fell entirely asleep. It had been years since she'd had the chance to make sure that he slept through the night in the fun way. When it got closer to the meeting time, she gave him a light kiss on the top of his head and found her costume. Once she'd suited up, she headed up to the roof. She wanted to make sure that she was early so she could get the lay of the land and find the best vantage point. However, she had a feeling that the Red Canary was already two steps ahead of her on that one. She'd set the meeting place after all.
----
"Well... you actually faced up to your responsiblity and showed up. Consider me shocked, Sui Jerk Jai...." The words were said with obvious mocking and disdain, and came from roughly ten feet behind Dinah, where Red Canary crouched, ready to strike, poised not entirely unlike a cobra waiting to attack. "I'd hate to have to rub out a schoolteacher. Or a cripple. And what a tragedy it would have been if I would have had to go downstairs and slit the throat of your lover..."
She stood then, eyes staring daggers into the blonde, body still tensed and ready for war.
"I've waited eighteen years for this moment... I intend on savoring every second. Oh, look at you... I can see the venom in your eyes... you want to kill me. But you won't. Because you're weak. But I am NOT. We're going to battle to the death, right here tonight. And trust me when I say that each person here that you love will recieve one piece of you."
----
There was certainly a malice in Dinah's eyes at the threats doled out to Helena, Barbara, and Ollie. She was struck by the hatred coming from this woman and more than a little disturbed that she couldn't place who she was. Something about her posture really did remind her powerfully of Shiva, but this was not Shiva. What she could see under the mask made it clear enough. She squared her shoulders and her posture was defensive and ready for whatever this woman had to throw at her. She wouldn't throw the first punch, no matter how much she was goaded. It wasn't out of fear, but it was one method of controlling the fight.
"Valuing life is not weakness," she said simply. "Now, I still don't know who the hell you are so if we're going to duke it out, you might as well observe the niceties. Besides, whatever revenge you have in mind won't possibly be as sweet unless I know why."
She wouldn't let her voice betray just how much she was disturbed by the fact that this Red Canary seemed to know intimate details of her life and yet she knew nothing about her, or the reason for this whole vendetta.
----
"Oh, fear not... You hit that one right on the head." The woman said with sheer bile in her tone. "That's why I didn't just slit your worthless throat while you slept. Because I want not only to kill you.. but to first defeat you. Show you that your best still wasn't enough to save those you 'claim' to love."
She walked toward Dinah, striding over until they were face to face, which was when she pulled the mask down, giving Dinah a chance to study her features before grabbing her and planting an almost vicious kiss on her lips.
"Ready to die... 'sister'?"
----
Sister. That, coupled with the good look that she'd gotten at those features brought on a wave of memories. A little girl with a sweetness in spite of the bleak life that she'd been born into. The first thing she heard when she woke up and felt someone touching her hair. "Hand. Pretty. Sister." The little girl for whom 'Mother' meant something quite different, the little girl who'd sort of adopted her while she walked Shiva's path in an attempt to understand the assassin. The child that was meant to take Shiva's place. Dinah had taken her away from all of that. She was supposed to get a chance at a better life. A more normal life.
The little girl who'd captured everyone's hearts, who'd given hugs freely and cried when she'd discovered pancakes. Sin had made it easy to walk away from the knowledge and training that Shiva had to offer. She'd done what she could to keep the child safe and to help her cope with the horrors she'd seen during her training. When the League of Assassins had come after her and it'd been clear that they would keep coming, Dinah had made the choice to give her up in the hopes that she would be safe with a normal family. That she'd get the chance to get out of the lifestyle that Dinah had to offer her.
Her shoulders slumped as she realized that she'd made the wrong choice. She didn't know how this happened or how Sin had grown up to be this, but she'd clearly dropped the ball somewhere along the way. She'd been visiting, but that wasn't the same and she knew it. She'd made the girl a promise and she had broken it.
All of the fight went out of her body, and Dinah spread her arms out in a sign of acquiescence.
"Go ahead."
----
"Come on, 'sister'... Fight me." Sin sneered at her, throwing a quick backfist at Dinah that connected with her left cheek, making a sickening crack. "If I wanted to kill you without a fight I'd have done it already. Fight me! Fight me, damn you!" She growled, throwing a sharp kick into the blonde's ribs, as hard as she could. "Fight, you coward!"
----
Dinah reeled backward from the kick, but held her ground. It might have broken a rib or two. She was pretty sure it had, from the way she felt right now. She also didn't care all that much.
"No," she said, in between shallow breaths. "I screwed up with you and I'm sorry. I'm done hurting you, Sin. Please do whatever you need to get closure."
She planned to stop it if she could before Sin killed her. She didn't have a death wish, even in spite of what some might think of her choice of night-time activities. And more importantly, she didn't think that killing her would do Sin any favors. But she was damn sure going to take this beating because if her choices had led to the girl growing up this hard, then she deserved it.
----
Sin just gave her a hateful, venomous growl, and swiftly threw three more sharp kicks into her midsection, before kneeing her sharply in the face. "You are not taking this frome me, woman. You took enough from me.... my revenge isn't negotiable." She explained, standing over the blonde and setting a foot on her chest. "You hurt me worse than the people you took me from. You're GOING to fight me, 'sister'. Trust me... before this is all over with, no matter how I have to 'convince' you... you're going to fight me."
She pressed down a little with her foot, putting weight and pressure on the obviously busted ribs.
"My closure will come when I've entirely broken you. Fractured your spirit the way you fractured MINE. And frankly... you're not there yet. When you're so broken that you'll come at me with the same ferocity that you'd go at Shiva with... THEN we'll be ready to end this. Until then?" She grinned, a sick, broken curl of her lips. "Just remember: I know how to hit you where it hurts."
----
Dinah didn't move once Sin pressed down on her ribs. It hurt like hell, but she'd been hurt before. Physical pain didn't bother her nearly as much as the heartbreak of seeing how much she'd let this little girl (not so little anymore) down. She knew that she couldn't delay the fight forever, because Sin had been very clear as to what she would do to entice her to fight and Dinah had no intentions of letting the people she loved get hurt because of her mistakes. She just had to find a way to reach Sin.
She groaned and tried to sit up. Tried and failed. So she just settled for lying back on the cold surface of the roof. It might have been better for everyone if Sin finished the job now, but Dinah didn't anticipate that she would. Eventually, she'd need to find a way to get a message to someone to find her. For now, she just let her eyes flutter closed as she did her best to block out the pain.
