Diana still didn’t know what to make of this strange land. Washington DC had been quite a bit of culture shock for her and there were a lot of things that had made her want to break a few arms. Even some things that she had broken limbs over. Yet this place took all of the vices that she’d seen in this nation’s capital and somehow had found a way to multiply the exponentially. There wasn’t even a trace of nature that she could find. Flesh-particularly a woman’s flesh-seemed to be an acceptable form of currency.
She’d used that stupid device given to her upon her arrival and still hadn’t found many answers. What she’d found were more women trapped here and some information that there was a barrier around the city. Naturally, she’d headed to see what could be done about the barrier. She wasn’t expecting invisibility. Several punches later, she’d found that it was impenetrable at the moment. She didn’t plan on accepting defeat so easily, but it seemed that her resources were better used elsewhere.
The Amazon princess turned and headed back towards the hotel that seemed to be a hub of sorts. It was taller than any building she’d ever seen and there were lights everywhere. She couldn’t help looking up as she walked. Some of it held a strange sort of beauty while most of the scenery felt garish and unnecessary. This place seemed to be a temple of sorts but she had to wonder what exactly it was a temple to. Besides the sins of man, as the voice on the radio had informed her. Oh, she’d added the ‘man’ part but this place certainly seemed tailor made to just about every sin she’d seen in the hearts of the men in Washington DC.
If her blue leather skirt and red bustier complete with Hephaestus forged armor looked out of place, she cared not. She was in hostile territory and she wouldn’t soon give up her armor. Nor did she intend to blend into the scenery like some sort of wilting flower shying away from conflict with her captors. No, she walked with her head held high and her shoulders squared away in defiance of those who would seek to hold her here against her will.
----
In the alleyway by the resort, Reyna was finding out that men were pigs whether they were pirates or not. Back at Camp Jupiter, Reyna commanded respect; those who didn’t show it to her were very quickly shown just why she had been made Praetor. Here in this strange world, the men didn’t know any better.
She was taking a run in the morning - just because she was in an unknown land didn’t mean she was about to give up her training regime - when she came across a group of young men loitering against the side of the building.
“Hey baby,” called one of them, his head shaved bald to contrast the thick goatee he sported. “Where’re you goin’ so fast? Stick around and have a chat, huh?”
Reyna ignored them; she just ran on - until four of them came in front of her to block her path.
She slowed down and came to an eventual stop, and then eyed them. The fact that they were interrupting the rhythm of her workout was annoying enough; that they were being rude and somewhat threatening about it only ticked her off more.
“Get out of my way,” she ordered tersely.
“Or what?” Another guy leered at her and sauntered closer. “You’ll make us? We just wanna talk, right boys?”
There was a chorus of amused agreements, except for one who happened to glance out of the mouth of the alleyway. “Hey, look at that chick dressed like it’s the Fourth of Jul-”
His observation was interrupted by a strangled shout. Reyna had grabbed the arm of the guy who’d been reaching for her and twisted it behind his back, then stomped down on the back of his knees for good measure, eliciting that shout from him.
All of a sudden, the men weren’t looking out of the alleyway anymore. They were focused on the Spanish-looking girl who couldn’t have been older than 18.
“Bitch,” the bald man snarled, a switchblade flashing in his hands. “That’s how you want to play it?”
In response, the daughter of Bellona simply yanked the arm of her captive up higher, making him let out another scream. “Leave,” she ordered. “This will not end well for you.”
----
Diana’s senses were keener than an ordinary human’s. Which meant that she’d heard the men as they called out to the other woman. It certainly seemed similar to scenes that she’d experienced back in Washington DC. Only in this case, the woman in the alley had already started to fight back. All the same, Diana stepped into the alley as well. Just in case she was needed. Her stance was squared and she leveled all of the men with a glare befitting of Amazon royalty.
“I would listen to her. She’s certainly offering you more charity than I intend to.”
One of the men smirked and reached for a weapon.
“Look, sweetheart. This is a private party. Though there’s always room for one more.”
The man barely had the time to get his gun out when Diana closed the distance between herself and the thug and slammed her fist into his face. That one punch elicited a spray of blood as the man crumpled to the ground. The Amazon turned to look at her potential sister in arms to see if her assistance was needed further.
----
It wasn’t, not really. Unused to having their prey fight back, some of the men had already fled. Those stupid enough to stay were being taken down handily by Reyna. She’d picked up a garbage can lid that she was using as a shield against the men’s weapons, and a PVC pipe that she wielded as a club. It was still five against one, though, and as capably as Reyna was handling herself at the moment, an extra hand wouldn’t go amiss.
---
“You handle yourself well, sister!” Diana shouted as she jumped into the fray.
Compared to the minions of Hades, these men weren’t much in terms of opponents. All the same, Diana appreciated finding someone to fight alongside, even if the battle would only last for minutes. There was a fierceness to the other woman that reminded her of her sisters back home. It made her wistful for Themyscira, though there would be no room for that emotion until their foes were dispatched. Her fighting style was visceral poetry in motion as her fists and feet hit their intended marks.
----
"As do you," Reyna called back. While she could have dealt with the men on her own, she appreciated the help all the same. It made dispatching the men that much quicker.
When they were done, with the men either having fled or writhing on the ground, Reyna took a good look at the woman who had jumped in to help. She'd gotten a peripheral look when she'd first came in, but her focus had been on her would-be attackers.
Though Diana's attire got a raised eyebrow, Reyna didn't remark on it. Instead, she inclined her head respectfully. "Thank you for your aid. I am Reyna, Daughter of Bellona, Member of the Twelfth Legion Fulminata."
---
She was Roman. That was interesting. Diana didn’t recognize the name of her mother, but she did recognize the Roman title. She’d studied up on her history, particularly involving Greeks and Romans, upon arriving in man’s world. It was enlightening in terms of what the world believed about her sisters and her heritage, as well as that of their would-be enemies.
“You’re welcome, though it seems as if you would have handled yourself just find even without my assistance.” There was a respect in those words. Whatever Reyna’s culture, Diana recognized a kindred spirit when she came across one. The young woman wouldn’t have been out of place on Themiscyra.
“I am Diana, daughter of Hippolyta, princess and now representative for Themiscyra. It was a pleasure to see battle at your side. Or what counts for battle with these thugs.”
While her manner of dress was unusual given the surroundings, Diana was proud of the outfit and more importantly, the history that it represented.
“Are you a captive in this place too?”
There was just the tiniest edge of suspicion behind that question. Reyna had been an ally in arms but that did not mean that she could be counted on as an ally now that the need for fighting had passed. She could just as likely be in league with whoever the captors were in this place.
----
“Hippolyta?” Reyna repeated, amazed. She recognized the name instantly. Even if her own sister weren’t the Queen of the Amazons, she knew her history well enough to recognize the name for what it was. “Queen Hippolyta, of the Amazons? But I thought she was…”
She’d been killed by Herakles, who had been fooled into thinking her treacherous. And that was a very long time ago. Nowhere in the myths did anyone mention anything about a daughter.
It would, however, explain Diana’s prowess, if not how she came to be here. Then again, Percy Jackson had come from several months ago. Could it be possible that Diana had been brought here from several centuries ago?
She shook her head, trying to sort it out. “I..yes, I am a captive. Have you only just arrived?”
----
Diana smiled knowingly.
“That’s a common misconception. The Amazons were given Themiscyra and given the option to hide away from the world. It ensured that we were left alone.”
Until now. Steve might not realize it, but when he’d washed up on the beach of that island, he’d changed things forever. She believed that it was a good thing, but knew that some of her sisters might disagree. And yet, she wasn’t sure what would come of relations with Themiscyra and the rest of the world now that she was here. Though she still held out hope that she would find a way to return home before anyone was wrongly blamed for her disappearance.
“Just today. How long have you been here? I’ve already tried out the forcefield, but it seems to be tough enough to withstand an Amazon’s rage.”
Which in her mind meant that it was very strong indeed.
----
That drew an even deeper frown from Reyna, because she knew differently. The Amazons still interacted with the mortal world, and they were based out of Seattle. She should know; her sister was their Queen.
But she'd come to understand that there were different people from different worlds here. It could very well be that Diana came from one such world, where the Amazons did retreat to Themiscyra. Either way, she would have to let Hylla know.
"I have been here just before the new year," Reyna replied. "And neither have I - nor my sister and friend - been able to escape either. This is a strange force that has us trapped."
---
Diana frowned as she processed the information given. It wasn’t a full-on scowl. Not the sort of thing that would send many running in the opposite direction. But she wasn’t happy and she looked a little like she might hit something or someone. Assuming that she had a place to direct her rage. For now, she had no reason to direct it at the young woman in front of her.
“Your sister and a friend are with you?” she asked. “Did you three arrive together?”
She’d arrived alone, which didn’t bother her. Though she was certain that Steve would be worried once he realized that she’d disappeared. It was possible that Watchtower would notice at some point as well. The next time Superman’s group needed her assistance, well… Diana just hoped that she could find a way home before that.
She nodded toward the street to see if Reyna would walk with her. She didn’t like the idea of standing in place right now. She had to be active, had to explore and find out as much as she could.
“What have you learned so far about this place and our captors?”
----
Reyna had no desire to hang around the alley way, so she walked out with Diana.
"Very little," she replied, obviously displease by that. "Those who were captured don't know what is happening, and those who seem to be natives do not give any answers, even when offered incentive or under threat of violence. So far, nothing has been asked of us. We are simply...here. As for my friend and sister, we were all brought here within a short time of each other, but we were not together when abducted. There seems to be no pattern or reason to this at all.
---
Diana was a little disheartened at the lack of information, but she had been in situations that seemed more hopeless before. She was determined and she certainly had her ways of finding answers. She started to move back toward the hotel. There was a part of her that balked at the idea of accepting a home base from their captors and yet… she was certain that this whole city belonged to them. Therefore, she would take the resources given to her and use them to her own ends. She would still do things on her own terms, but she didn’t see the sense in turning down a bed or a meal unless given a reason to do so. She might not need those things as much as some, but she also preferred them.
“This is a very strange city of lights, is it not? I do wonder why they feel all of this is necessary.”
It was excess, and while she was a fan of beauty, she was not a fan of excess for the sake of excess. The US seemed to have quite a bit of that and it didn’t do anyone any favors from what she could see.
----
“They seem to have taken it from a city in America, although why the original location felt all of this is necessary, I’m not sure,” Reyna said.
They arrived at the hotel now, but Reyna wasn’t finished with her jog yet. “It was a pleasure to meet and fight with you, Diana. Should you need anything, just call for me. I am in room 3506.”
