This was the work of the Goblin King, he was sure of it. The man excelled at trickery and deceit, with those treacherous crystals of his, and Didymus felt certain this place was nothing more than a cunning illusion. He simply needed to find the edge of the orb -- no doubt at the outskirts of this 'Sin City' -- and break through, in order to get back to the Lady Sarah. He had not liked the idea of her facing the Goblin King alone at the outset, and he liked it even less now. She had Hoggle and Sir Ludo to come to her aid, still, he supposed, but not him. And he had given his solemn word to aid the fair maiden, should she need him.
At least Ambrosius was there with him. Didymus never liked charging into battle without his loyal steed (whenever he could actually get Ambrosius to charge toward the battle, that was). After scooping the key of the table next to the bed, he tucked it into the front of his doublet. Though he left the magical box where it was, since he still was not entirely sure how to operate it, and it was not useful to find the Lady Sarah. Didymus then climbed off of the bed and whistled to Ambrosius.
"Come here, boy," he called, as his mount made his way cautiously over. "Steady..." Didymus took hold of the saddle, heaving himself onto his steed's back, and then made for the door. He had to stand in the stirrups in order to work the handle, but soon enough, he had the door open, and dug his heels into Ambrosius's sides. "Forward!" he called, and they trotted out into the hall.
He had made the maid a promise, and he would keep his word. No wood, no tor, no loch would keep him from his appointed task. This door, however, might. Didymus stopped short at the door marked "Exit" from the fortification in which he was now ensconced. Even if he could reach the handle, again whilst stood in the stirrups, this time he could not apply enough force to overcome the dastardly lever at the top. The hinges were on the inside, so no doubt that was the way it opened, and even the door itself proudly proclaimed "PULL!" But he could not. The best he could to was to crack it open an inch or so, before his strength gave way and it closed again on its own.
Perhaps if he braced his legs against the frame, instead? That opened the door another inch or two, but not enough for him to climb through, and certainly not enough for him and Ambrosius to ride through. Though it might have seemed hopeless, Didymus was determined. This door would not defeat him. His anger got the better of him, and after giving a little growl, he rapped thrice on the monstrosity with his lance.
"Open up!" he called, followed by three more raps. "Open up, I say!" But the door stood firm. It would not be moved. Clearly, he was going to have to rethink his strategy for escaping this castle...
