Misty sat cross legged in the middle of the bed, surrounded by more luxury than she’d seen in her entire life. There was a lot to miss about her home. She missed the way it smelled. She missed the life that moved in and out of it of it’s own accord. Insects...rodents...reptiles. She’d never been alone there, though they had been a poor substitute for human contact. And yet, human contact was always her undoing. Her loneliness had driven her out of the safety of her home, seeking other people, seeking comfort in numbers, and what had happened to her? They’d burned her at the stake. She’d answered the call of power and found her way to Zoe and Kyle, but they had left her, too. Used her for what she could do for them and then left her alone once more. Every time they returned to her, things got worse. People were her downfall, and yet she couldn’t seem to stop wanting them. She wanted to belong. She didn’t want to be lonely anymore. She missed Stevie. Things might have been more bearable if she only had her records, but Kyle had broken them. The thought still brought a prickling of tears to her eyes. Her music was the only solace she had through those long days, and he had taken that from her. He’d taken her only friend. Closing her eyes, Misty tried to concentrate. She was so high up, meditation was difficult. She felt no connection to the earth in this artificial construction of metal and plastic and concrete. She breathed in deeply through her nose and out through her mouth, counting the intervals and trying to lull herself into a semi-trance. She tried to sense the sand and stone so many stories beneath her. She thought of the small traces of life moving beneath them. She thought of the other people inside the massive hotel. She tried to reach out to feel the mice, even rats, that always filled places like this no matter how clean they claimed to be. Everything was so much more difficult. The artificial quality of the air kept her distracted. Kept her from truly letting go. Quietly, she hummed. Dreams. It was always soothing to her. Her body swayed to the familiar rhythm and, for the first time since arriving, she lost herself. Just for a moment. She was moving before her eyes had fully opened. It wasn’t a call exactly. It wasn’t like what she’d felt when Zoe had brought back Kyle. It was closer to what she’d felt like before going to the clearing. Before seeing what had been done to one of her own kind. It was a wisp of power, a simple flutter in her stomach that said “you are not alone” and she knew exactly where it was coming from. He hadn’t told her where his room was, but she knew the way he felt, and she knew he was there, pulling at her without knowing he was doing it. She didn’t even slide on shoes before she was out the door and moving through the hotel. She preferred the stairs to the elevator when going down short distances, but today, with so many floors between them, she waited impatiently, feeling the cold tile beneath her feet slowly warm from her contact. The hour was still early. Week sunlight was barely easing it’s way over the horizon, but she didn’t stop to think as she jogged lightly up to the door that bore his name. She didn’t knock, so much as slap her hand, palm open, against the door repeatedly, bordering on a frantically, waiting for him to come and let her in. |
