Who: Sarah and Sheila
What: Exploring
Where: Various places in the area
When: Today at 3:30
Warnings: Lol none

Even though she was still in the process of moving in, Sarah already knew Pax Letale had been the right choice. The view was amazing, the people were mostly friendly, and somehow a friend she hadn't seen in years ended up living in the same place. As long as none of her ex-boyfriends moved in - which she thought was a little too unreal to actually happen - then she really didn't have anything to worry about.

She'd spent her break getting plants for the nameless 103, and at 3 o'clock sharp punched out and caught a ride off a co-worker to get them back. Usually she would have taken the bus or a cab, but she needed the trunk space and didn't have a car of her own. Once she dropped them off in front of 103, feeling pretty satisfied with herself, she hurried back to her apartment and grabbed a quick shower before changing into denim shorts and a plain white t-shirt. With minutes to spare, Sarah headed down to the lobby with a simple purse slung over her shoulder and sandals on her feet. She hadn't really had a chance to get familiar with the area yet, and exploring with someone else was always more fun.

Sheila had worked the breakfast shift and lunch shifts at the Storyteller's Cafe, having lunch and had afternoon off until she was on for dinner again. Another day might have been spent taking a nap - she'd been up most of the night before - but excitement about the move-in kept her awake better than even caffeine could. She changed out of her costume into a simple dress, grabbing a water bottle and a purse before heading down to the lobby.

She didn't have anything to guess on with Sarah, other than a name and a concern for plants. Sheila had never been one for keeping them - she always seemed to forget to water them or keep the A/C at the proper temperature. Still, this was a new building and start - maybe she could develop some new habits.

Seeing the woman in the lobby, Sheila bounded over the stairs towards her. "Sarah, right?" she asked, with a grin. "I'm Sheila from upstairs - it's good to meet you!"

She was half-staring out the lobby doors when a voice caught her attention, and she beamed at the woman in the pink dress bounding towards her. By now Sarah had realized she wasn't very good at reading people, but she looked friendly enough; and anyone who managed a grin like that had to be nice. "That's me. It's nice to meet you too, Sheila."

Gesturing towards the door, she moved to take a step forward. "Thanks again for offering to come. It'll be nice to get a feel for the area and see what places are within walking distance." She still didn't have a car, although she was getting around to it... albeit slowly.

Sheila's bounded ahead to the door, getting there ahead and holding it open. Just to be nice and get them going. "Offering? I would have done it on my own anyway and then I'd have been alone." Her face screwed up in an over-exaggerated pained expression. "Devin's too busy with her gaming. It's great how we're all interacting already."

Sort of. She couldn't say she liked the girl on the tenth floor - when people couldn't get out of their own way with being melodramatic and depressing, she was always caught between pushing them towards sense and high tailing it out of there. Sheila gave a little shrug, before hitting the streets once Sarah was through.

"If we see anything good, we can round back and get my truck-" She pointed to a red one, visible from what it was. Patting her purse she added, "I brought my keys just in case. You never know when you want to change your mind or want to run off...but then we'd be more of a Bonnie and Clyde on the road, then Lewis and Clark exploring."

It crossed her mind, briefly that she was rambling and she took a deep breath before looking up at the other woman. "I don't remember, are you Lewis or Clark?"

Sarah grinned in thanks and stepped through the door, hesitating only momentarily before choosing to head right. "Devin?" Her face screwed up in thought as she tried to place the name, and after a moment it clicked. "Oh - 201, right? She's the one with the loud music." It wasn't said with any hint of disdain, though; she really didn't mind as long as it wasn't blasting at 4am, and she was usually at work during the day anyway. "Not that I mind. It saves me having to turn on the radio myself."

"Alright. I'd offer my own car, but... I don't really have one. Not yet, anyway. I figured I should get all my boxes unpacked and settle in a little before taking on car shopping. Those salesmen are like snakes sometimes." She laughed at the reference to Bonnie and Clyde, trying to imagine the two of them driving around with guns and robbing a couple of small-time banks. "We could be a combination of the two - Lewis and Clark meets Bonnie and Clyde."

She didn't mind Sheila's rambling at all, since she was prone to do the same thing at times. "Hmmm... I think I'm Clark."

Sheila followed, the water bottle the only thing keeping her arms from swinging wildly. "That's her," she said, with a hint of an impishness in her grin. "We used to work together and we're good friends." Or at least, considerably so - the only person she was as close with was Horus. She shrugged, not wanting to pursue that thought. There wasn't any reason to. "I'd say bang on her door if it gets too bad, but knowing her that won't work. Offer her food." It was said with a wise nod, serious for only a moment before she was all grins again.

"Hakuna matata, as they say around here-" Because quoting Disney left and right was natural to her. You had to embrace it or go mad. "If you need a lift or something for groceries, feel free to let me know if I'm around - I don't mind!" More than likely she could hit errands in the same run. Her lips pursed thoughtfully, as they hit a less residential area. "Explorers who have to pay for things via robberies, then have get aways in...canoes?" She laughed, a hand covering her mouth.

She nodded, filing it away to remember. "Well then, Clark - are we poking into things randomly or are we on a mission?"

"It's nice to have a friend living close by. Did you two move in together, or was it more of an unexpected sort of thing?" Personally she enjoyed the surprise of finding a familiar face, but if she'd known that Roy was moving to Pax beforehand than it might have influenced her decision just a little. Familiar faces were good, unless they were jerk ex-boyfriends like Zeus. Then it just became a major headache. "So food is her weak spot? Good to know. Maybe I'll stop by with a bribe-- I mean some dessert later on."

Sarah was only partly surprised by the generosity of the offer, and met it with a grateful smile. "Really? Oh, that would be great. As long as I'm not inconveniencing you or anything, though." As much as she liked driving, walking was a close second - it was nice, to feel the sun and the wind and be able to savor it. "Canoes can be the new getaway vehicle of choice. We could start a brand new trend!"

Poking into things randomly sounded appealing, but if she could find some kind of plant store - even a small flower shop would do - then it would save her a return trip. "I'd like to find somewhere that sells plants... even little potted flowers would do. I work in a greenhouse, but it's not quite in walking distance and taxi drivers don't like it very much when you have excess baggage. Neither do bus drivers, actually. Walking distance means I could visit more often, too." Especially if they kept dying like her others did - she was going to bankrupt herself if things kept up.

Sheila uncapped her water bottle, taking a large chug of it before shrugging. "It was more of a I'm-moving-you're-moving? kind of thing. It seemed good and our timing was great-" She gave Sarah a grin, a hand reaching to wipe her mouth. "It works out well enough, I'm glad to have her here." Or she was supposed to be - she didn't mind and it would be enjoyable. She always enjoyed being around Devin. Brushing those thoughts aside, she added, "She doesn't cook much or can afford it really."

"And definitely not. That's why I offered." The cap was placed on the water bottle again and she smiled up at her. "Next stop's a camping store then - if you see one, let me know!"

Sheila nodded thoughtfully, before scanning the shops. "Somewhere with plants it is! That seems pretty important to you. Reason why?" These things made her curious - it was what made a person, details like this. She made note of these in her stories.

She nodded, pulling her purse higher on her shoulder. "That makes sense." Sarah wasn't much of a cook herself, but she could manage enough to keep herself fed without having to order takeout too much. "Maybe we can come to a compromise, then. I can deliver occasional meals in exchange for a reasonable volume level."

For a moment she wondered if there was actually a camping store around, but there very well might be. "I'll keep a keen eye out, Lewis."

She caught sight of a bookstore across the street, and although it wasn't what she was looking for at the moment, she filed the knowledge away for another day. "Plants are... well, I guess you could say they're my 'thing'. I suppose it started when I was young - my mom was really outdoorsy, and planting a garden was how we bonded. I've always loved watching things grow and flourish." She was usually fairly good at it, too, save for recently.

"Try it," Sheila said brightly. There wasn't a reason to think it wouldn't - Devin was fairly easy to predict. She'd be grateful at the very least for another free meal. With a roll of her shoulders she went on, "She can see reason on occasion."

There was a short nod as they walked - Sheila's eyes fell on the bookstore just after she did. Not hiding her enthusiasm, a fist was pumped - a motion possibly picked up from her neighbor on the third floor. "That's much closer than at my last apartment. I wonder if they have that new Robert Graves yet..." She debated for a moment, before continuing to walk - it wasn't likely. No need to waste time.

She made some hmm-ing sounds as Sarah explained, trying not to come up with mythological comparisons. It was something she did naturally, handing out nicknames in terms of the myths and folklore she was so familiar with. Saying Sarah was anything other than Clark would be confusing though. "It's cool to have things like that. I'm used to drifting-" Even if she'd been on "the road" for a short while. She'd never really held onto things growing up. What she needed was her stories and make-believe and those were safe in her mind. "Have any favorites?"

"Anything in particular she likes, or is free food in general good enough to appeal to her reasonable side?" It was about time she started stretching her kitchen skills beyond things that came in boxes and required a maximum fifteen minutes of preparation time. Taking her mother seriously when she said learning to cook would be an invaluable skill probably would have been a good idea, but she'd been in her 'rebellious stage' then and didn't think that she had to learn just because she was female.

Sarah noted Sheila's enthusiasm with a smile, and after debating whether asking would make her look stupid or not, she decided to anyway. "Robert Graves?"

She thought for a moment, trying to choose amongst her options. "Oh, I do, but I think my favorite would have to be the amaryllis flower. It was the first one I ever planted, and I was so ridiculously proud of myself when it bloomed." She pulled a face at the memory - although she was just a kid, so her enthusiasm was excusable.

"Anything beyond ramen," Sheila said, laughing slightly. "Because she can manage that." The rhythm of her walking picked up as she went along - there was a noticeable bounce as she made her way down the street. Hair bounced against her back as her head went to the side, as she mused out loud, "I wouldn't worry too much. She'll let you know if she doesn't like it." Devin was good at complaining.

Her nodding grew enthusiastic. "He wrote about and studied Greek and Roman mythology. He's my hero- they're put out a new edition of his books The Greek Myths." She grinned. "It won't be that different from the last, but I still want it."

She watched her, the smile tugging at her lips. The name made a soft oh sound slip from her. She knew the myth behind that plant and it distracted her from anything else. "I like the story behind that one. The Greeks came up with so many for the plants-" She smirked slightly. "I always thought Menthe was the funniest. Poor, foolish girl..."

It took her a moment, but she managed to connect 'ramen' with a visual image without too much trouble. "Alright. I can work with the trial and error approach." General things would probably work best, then - there were some foods that practically every human being in existence liked, or at least could tolerate.

Sarah didn't know much about mythology, but what she could recall from high school had been fairly interesting. Do you know a lot about Greek and Roman mythology?" It seemed like she did, considering her enthusiasm, and she recalled the story Sheila had posted to the forums. "It was never something I studied extensively, but it does seem interesting." Especially if they had stories about plants - how could she not have known that? "What happened to Menthe?"

Sheila flashed her a grin. "Something will work. If she doesn't stop, I can try and ask too." She shrugged. Try was the most accurate term - Devin was herself. Sheila didn't really want to change who she was, other than changing the spending habits so she could feed herself one of these days.

"It's my hobby - well, not just the Greco-Romans," she gave a firm nod, pausing at a street corner. Looking back and forth, before crossing she went on, "I'm not picky - the Norse and Celts have really extensive mythos as well. I'm still researching Japanese mythology as it confuses me, but Hindu?" There was a happy sigh, before shrugging again. "I could go on forever about it. I'm lucky and my job lets me do that." Meaning she only stopped because she was restraining herself.

Her lips pursed as she made a soft hmm sound, deciding the best approach. Sometimes she went with the text-book approach - just the details when explaining the myths. But Menthe was Chthonic, something that had always interested Sheila - anything related to the death and various afterlifes had intrigued her. She liked filling her own details in on the stories, filling in the blanks that the ruins and texts couldn't tell her.

"Menthe was a daughter of one of the rivers in the Underworld. She grew up on land though, as one of Demeter's - the Goddess of the Harvest and Earth - retinue. When Persephone was kidnapped by Aidoneus-" She winced, ammending with a smile. "Sorry, Hades - things changed. Some years down the road Demeter sent Menthe to the underworld to be a companion to Persephone." She uncapped her bottle of water again, adding, "For some reason, Menthe and Hades developed a relationship. Probably because of the state of things between Persephone and Hades."

She took a sip of water, before covering it. "This continued for some time, until Persephone found out. In a rage she stomped on the nymph, turning her into a plant. Menthe, also known as Minthe became Mint." She gave a final nod, signalling the end of the story. "Usually the nymphs or girls turn because of unrequited love or tragedy. Not because of an affair, that probably was justified."

Sarah wasn't the sort of person who was bored by stories - she loved hearing them, and mythology was usually more interesting than a lot of novels currently in print. Hades sounded familiar, even though her first thought was of the blue-haired antagonist from the Disney version of Hercules. "The Greek gods had a lot of affairs, didn't they?" It was something that sounded right, but she wasn't sure. Still, getting revenge by turning the girl into a mint plant was new. "I never knew that, about mint."

She barely remembered to keep track of the stores they passed, but so far there was nothing but a convenience store with a pitifully wilted flower plant hanging near the door. "What was wrong with Hades and Persephone?" she asked, curious. If she was still jealous of the affair, then things couldn't have been that bad - but why would she be jealous in the first place? Kidnapping didn't sound very romantic.

Sheila laughed, not even bothering to cover her mouth. Her head went back in a near cackle. "That's an understatement. Funny though, that it's always the guys instead of the gals-" She looked to Sarah, amused. "In terms of numbers? It's ridiculous. Though Hades really didn't really throw a fit about Adonis...which is extremely creepy in my opinion." Her nose wrinkled - the incest lines on that one bothered her. But then again, with Myrrha it wasn't that surprising...even if it again, wasn't quite her fault. Fucking Aphrodite.

Literally.

"Not many people pay attention to the myths," Sheila said, with a shrug. She wasn't offended - she was used to it. Besides it gave her an opportunity to share the stories. The question about Hades and Persephone surprised her and she snorted. "Beyond the rape thing?" Too late she remembered the effect that word had on the general public. She didn't wince, but did offer a slight smile. "In the classical sense. It's synonymous with kidnapping. Raptio is Latin for abduction after all. One tends to imply the other..."

"It's not very surprising." It wasn't to her, at least - women weren't perfect, but men had a tendency to be completely callous in terms of relationships. "Mortal men are bad enough, but gods must be terrible." There was probably a double standard, too; if one of the goddesses had an affair then their husband would strike the poor fool down with a bolt of lightning or... something childish like that. "Persephone had an affair with Adonis?" God, what hope was there for normal people if gods couldn't even stay faithful?

Sarah's eyes widened at the word 'rape', and she was seconds away from a very shocked 'What?!' when Sheila explained. "Oh. So, Hades kidnapped Persephone... but if she didn't like him, then why would she care if he had an affair or not?" As she spoke they passed a small grocery store, which she thought would be useful in the future and immediately took note of.

Sheila's arms swung leisurely, her head tilted to the side as she looked to Sarah. "She did and she was his foster-mom. Pretty much raised him. The myths are full of this stuff though. Soap operas for the times, you know?"

She gave a little shrug at that, eyes landing on a plant shop down the street. With a grin, she pointed it out, speed picking up. "Depends on the myth. Some people say she fell in love with him or chose to stay with him willingly afterwards-" She gave a look, unsure if Sarah knew that much. "By eating the pomegranate seeds? My guess is that it was Stockholm Syndrome. After a couple thousand years, you have to be really strong to hold up against that for that long."

She tried and failed to keep from frowning, her expression becoming one of faint aversion. "That's the best way to describe it... definitely the stuff soap operas are made of. People love that kind of thing, though."

Sarah followed Sheila's gesture and lit up, having half-expected to not have much luck on their first trip out. She quickened her pace to match the other girl's still interested in their talk of myths and gods. "Pomegranate seeds? It sounds kind of familiar." The romantic in her sighed at the idea of Persephone actually falling in love with Hades, but it was a rather small part of her now - kidnapping and affairs wasn't very appealing. "I guess," she laughed. "That's kind of... sad. I mean, would it have hurt for Hades to try asking or something?" She was half-joking, but there was still a hint of disapproval beneath it.

"It's why it's stayed popular throughout the times," Sheila said with a small smile. She let the subject drop beyond that though, noticing the look on Sarah's face. No need to keep on if she was uncomfortable with it.

She perked up as Sarah did - finding the reaction to a plant store just a bit amusing. "She ate six seeds and as a result had to spend the winter with him. That's why we have winter." Supposedly. "Not sure - that's the part the myths leave out, you know. We don't know if he asked before or any of that - just that he trapped her with a narcissus before carrying her off."

Moving to the door, she held it open for her. "Don't get too entranced by daffodils," she recommended. "They're not as nice as they seem." She'd looked it up years ago, when wondering exactly what a marcissus was.

There was a time when she used to watch soap operas, namely that one lazy summer when she'd been 'laid off' and hung around the house drinking pop and watching whatever was on television - and thus her introduction to the soap opera. They were ridiculously fluffy and silly, but at least provided amusement. Incest, or even kind-of incest, wasn't really part of any of the plot-lines she could remember, though.

"Well, at least she was free during the rest of the seasons - winter is the one I would pass on, if I had to choose." It wasn't much of a bright side, but it was something; although she doubted the underworld was a very pleasant place to be.

Sarah smiled before entering the store, sighing in relief - this place would do very well. "I'll do my best," she said over her shoulder. "Too bad Persephone didn't have anyone to warn her."

Sheila gave a playful grin. She couldn't help it, after the restraint from before. "Passing on winter, plants with a mother - you don't have a creepy boyfriend, do you?" Her tone was pure teasing - as much as Sheila believed in her myths and fantasy, applying them like this was only meant as a joke. "Maybe you're not Clark after all."

She followed Sarah in, looking around before heading towards a book stand. "Consider yourself warned, this time around."
