Welcome Back My Friends/ To the Show that Never Ends
Who: Loki and James
What: An Early Morning Wake Up Call: Loki Style
Where: Pax 508
When: Around 4:00 am, October 31, 2011, directly after this
Warnings: Yes? Probably? TBA

Loki did not fly up the steps of the Pax, but only because he lacked the proper appendages. It was hard to imagine moving any faster in this form, even with muscle memory awakening images of Richard's much younger days as a high school track star. Back then, Richard had been fast. Now, spurred on by almost three hours of sheer terror and a blast of realization, Loki was a blur. He was through the doors to the Pax, leaving Melinoe behind him, and on his way up the inner stairs before the doorman even looked up. The stairs fell away in huge strides as he used the handrails to propel him up three or four steps at a time.

Because he had realized. He had realized whose voice it had been that had awakened him within Richard only a few hours ago, the voice he had been trying to place ever since he awoke on the bus. With that realization came a solid, sure point in this confusing new world, a point that literally could not change. He could never change, and it had driven Loki crazy more often than not, but now it was a surety. And what ever else had happened between him and that ragr son-of-a-weeping-sore, he could forgive it all for this.

The doorway to the fifth floor burst open in front of him, and he ran to the first door, thanking whatever forces still existed that Richard had happened to see its occupant walk into it once during the last few weeks. It was locked, of course, but that was no hindrance to Loki. He slammed a palm into the lock itself, which screeched like the dead as powers long unused (and recently misused)burned into life and the tumblers of the cheap handle unlocked in ways and at a speed they had never been meant to withstand. He thew the door open and threw himself in after it, looking around for his old friend. "Þór," he cried at the top of his voice, "statt upp og koma með mér! Það eru skrímsli að berjast og ævintýri að hafa og heimurinn er á lífi aftur!"

James had been reading Walt Whitman poetry for the evening, relaxing and enjoying the silence of the apartment complex as everyone else was out and about for the Halloween weekend when he must have fallen asleep. Richard walking through the door was a rude way to wake up. The racket nearly caused him to fall off the couch when that putz from the bar walked into his apartment.

First of all, James had locked his apartment door. Second, he sure as hell wouldn't have invited Richard into the apartment. Third, he didn't know a damn thing he was saying.

Bleary eyed, James wiped at his eyes and got to his feet, reaching for his light and flicking it on. "What the hell are you doing here?" James growled. "Get the hell out of my apartment!" Gathering his senses, James stood his full height and stared at Lucy's date, his hands in fists at his side.

The nearly-manic smile that had been splitting Loki's face slipped, and he took an instinctive step back from the man who stood before him. He had been so sure. Was it possible that this wasn't...? But no. No, he had seen Thor in much stranger situations, wearing guises that Frigg herself would have walked past in the hall. This man he faced was little more than a beardless boy, but there was no mistaking him. It would be simple work- the addition of a few stone muscle, a beard to cover that absurd jaw line- to return him to his old appearance. This was Thor, he knew this was Thor, and any suggestion otherwise was sheer folly.

Or, his doubts whispered, he could be mistaken still. Images were fickle, no one knew this better than him. This could be no more than a ploy, something to do with the events of the night. It could be an accident, one of life's strange happenstances that he had run into one of Thor's descendants. Or, perhaps, the long years had finally driven him mad.

Those doubts were all that kept him from taking the boy by the shoulders and shaking some sense into him. Instead, he stood his ground and spoke, in a more subdued tone this time (and, he noted with some chagrin, in the correct language.) "You are Vingthor, are you not? Son of Odin and Frigg. Protector of Midgard. They called you Sonnung and Rym, Hlorridi and Einridi, though we both knew that last was never true. I liked the other names best: Oku-Thor of the cart, Ennilang of the wide forehead. You carried a hammer called Mjolnir. A hammer I procured for you," he added with a trace of annoyance, "and which you seem to have lost."

He scanned the other man's face for some sign of recognition, stepped forward, and raised his chin in defiance, feeling his own fists clench by his sides. The challenge was the best he had, the only one he felt sure would work. "Stand forth, Thor, and answer to your name, or you are no man."

James backed away from the man who he thought was Richard but now he was completely unsure. He was different physically and mentally, that was for sure. But the rambling the man was spewing, while completely off the wall and weird, seemed to churn something deep down within James.

Shaking his head, he squeezed his eyes shut for moment as he felt that something begin to rise within him. It was a dizzying feeling, overwhelming and pushing James to tell this man that he was exactly who he wanted him to be. He looked at Richard and felt some level of recognition but no...it didn't make sense.

"No, I don't know what the hell you're talking about. Are you drunk or something? You really need to go back to your apartment or something." James took another step back and with less confidence added on, "I don't have your hammer or whatever. I have one for hanging pictures and shit but nothing of yours."

"Nor of yours, it seems," Loki said, disappointment and disgust contending in his tone. He had seen the boy (James, his name is James) falter for a moment, but it was not enough to be sure of anything. Instead, he was left with a bitter sense of certainty, which was becoming more and more tinged with desperation. If this was not Thor, what then? He peered at the boy, at James, needing to find some sign.

"And yet again, I find myself unsure whether you are being stubborn or merely stupid," he managed to keep his tone in check, even while he felt his mouth begin to go dry. Continuing on in this place if this was indeed a false lead, would be, well, hard. Thor had not always been a friend, or even an ally towards the end, but to have found him only to lose him? And, as if from a great distance, he felt Richard's mind twitch with breaking and entering, assault a list of meaningless phrases that came with a feeling of trouble. This act would have its consequences. He had to be right.

Loki could only think of one move that he hadn't tried. If it worked it would probably end painfully for him. Not that such considerations had ever stopped him before. He stepped forward, raising his fists slightly to be ready for any response. "You wish me to leave? Very well." He eyed the other man, then snarled out the challenge. "Make me."

James made a small motion, his body leaning back as if Richard calling him stubborn or stupid had carried a blow. Then he was surprised, eyebrows arching as he heard the challenge that Richard gave. He could certainly move the man if he needed to. Whether physically lifting him or forcing him out with aggression- James had always liked forms of aggression more.

And whatever was racketing in James' mind, in his entire body, seemed content that James was willing to be physical. It was waiting and pulsing for this release as James stepped forward and gave Richard a push.

James blinked twice, his entire body for a split moment feeling as if it wasn't in his control, regaining composure he pushed at Richard again and felt himself falling away again. Something else, that something else, was forcing its way through James and sinking its way into each limb, each finger and toe, and pushing James away to give him a back seat view of his own living room and his own intruder.

With James put away in a corner of his own mind, which James didn't like one bit, Thor had control over the mortal body and changed it to suit him. The body lengthened by a few inches, it grew broader and the red highlights that were always apparent in James' hair became vivid. His chin developed a neat red beard and his gray eyes became flashing and full of life. Thor gave another push to Richard, his mouth breaking out into a grin as he let out a laugh. "You've always had a way with unlocking things, Loki," he laughed. No matter how they had parted or their past history, Thor was thrilled to finally be released from the mortals control and relished in having control in the waking world.

Loki allowed himself to rock back as James pushed him. His current form was taller than Richard's, and more prepared for physical confrontation, but he had no wish to fight. Especially not now. He decided that if he crossed the threshold, that would be the sign. He would leave willingly. The only other option would be to try and unlock Thor, and the possible consequences of that were too much to contemplate. If he was wrong, if James was really the only one here, then the effects of his act would not be pretty. If he was right, there was still no guarantee they would work. So, instead, as he stumbled back towards the door he merely hoped.

And then hoped no more. The change was unmistakable, the figure who emerged more familiar than any he had seen since his own awakening. The rush of feelings was almost overwhelming, but his grin was wide, and he couldn't help but returning Thor's laugh with one of his own. "I hardly had to!" he shot back. "As always, a challenge seemed to be sufficient." Tossing caution to the wind, he opened his arms, stepping forward into the room and offering his oldest friend his welcome. "It is good to see you, felagi."

Thor embraced Loki before stepping back and looking over the room. "You know, I could see all of this through this mortal's eye but I couldn't understand it all. I tried to push through so often and this man is so pointlessly angry that I thought many times I could come through. But I suppose I needed a little extra nudge." Thor grinned and patted Loki on the arm. "Thank you for that."

He stepped away and looked over the apartment. Everything had been seen through James' mind as if images from a dream. Now Thor could actually touch the objects himself and maybe see how they worked. This entire world was filled with magic he had never quite possessed. "Have you been here before? Have you been able to take over your mortals body before? Do you know why we are here?" He turned his stormy eyes to his friend and waited patiently for an answer. After all, Loki was the one who came to the apartment, he had been in possession of the mortals body, obviously he would know the answers.

Loki masked the anxiety the questions caused him with a laugh, waving his hands as if to slow Thor down. "So many questions, brother!" he chuckled, thinking quickly. He could pretend to know the answers, but he very much doubted whether such a facade would hold up for long. Honesty was probably the best course at the moment. For once. He shrugged and became slightly more serious. "I was hoping you would be able to answer some of mine. I am... new to all of this." He looked around the apartment, brows furrowed. "Very new. Tonight is my first time experiencing all of this first hand, and I was barely able to catch my breath before being attacked by monsters." He offered up a small smile. "So, at least that hasn't changed."

He rubbed the side of his nose, an old mannerism that was comforting in its familiarity. What to tell him of the rest? "I believe this is the first mortal I have... what would the term be? Ridden? Inhabited? Coincided with? I do not know why we are here, or even much of where 'here' is. My memories of the time before, between our days and Richard, are... hazy." That, at least, was a boldfaced lie. He remembered the pain of the snake's venom, the endless eons in his jail, but speaking of that seemed impolitic at best.

To cover for himself, he shifted the conversation quickly. "What of you? Is there aught you can tell me of this place?"

Thor waved his hand, batting Loki's questions away as he stepped past the god and began to circle the apartment. "I recall faded things as if they were a dream. There are a lot of tools in this place that are powered by some form of magic. I remember them I think..."

He moved near a light switched and ran his finger over it, accidentally flicking the switch down and causing the lights to go out. He looked above him and around the room before flicking the light switch once more. "I can create light without much use of my powers," he said softly, clearly in wonder. "This is certainly not our world and I have been asleep for much too long. But this is an interesting world. Come, brother, let us look through the rest of these rooms."

He beckoned Loki with a wave of his hand, urging him to follow Thor as he marched off towards what would be the bedrooms. This was a marvelous place and he was so easily distracted by all that it had to offer. So many gadgets and instruments to play with, Thor forgot the oddity of his being in this strange land and happily went to discover what else the mysterious place had to offer.

For all that it was a bit condescending, Loki's smile was genuinely fond as he followed the overexcited thunder god's progression through the apartment. It was easy to forget that there were monsters waiting for them outside and be lost in the wonder of the box that told stories with bits of light, or the intricate cleanliness of the cooking space. When they discovered the hot running water, all bets were off. Thor determined that the only thing to do was see if he could outlast the heat in a battle of the shower, and Loki went to amuse himself elsewhere. By the time he came back, his friend had emerged wrinkled and red from the heat of the water. That was when they decided to investigate the hot water heater.

And so it went for the rest of the day. When they had thoroughly "investigated" (read, trashed) the entirety of James' apartment, they moved on to bigger and better things. When the sheer exhaustion of maintaining a presence in their mortal form caught up with them, they had the hood open on James' car and were poking around to see what made it tick. The physical crash was probably all that prevented a much more violent end to the day.

As it was, Richard woke up with a splitting headache and a strange taste in his mouth halfway through November 1st, sprawled over the back seat of James' car. Not sure what had happened, or exactly whose car it was, he crawled back up into his room and slept until the headache went away.
