“Whoo!” Hands came up into victory pose, which led to a moment of slight flailing in the ocean as her equilibrium shifted suddenly. “I’m pretty sure me and Loser were going to be bffs but I can’t be too sad if you’re going to get me on lab duty. You’re awesome, Paul!” She slid her arms about his neck suddenly and gave a quick hug, a kiss on the cheek to boot, before swimming away once more. She would’ve done it if there hadn’t been a date scheduled but now that it was on the horizon, it didn’t seem to forward.
God, the Final Jeopardy question was a tough one. Why had he let her choose it?! She didn’t have a whole lot of things, but what she did keep was almost always of sentimental value. She was having a hard choosing the most important one. “I guess it would be this tiny ring that I have.” She lifted her hand and while she wasn’t wearing any she held her thumb and her forefinger near each other, the distance between them being only an inch, if that. “It was given to me when I was born by my grandma.” She could’ve left it at that but launched into a story. There was always a story with Cass. “The band’s really simple, and it’s not like uber expensive. But it’s pretty and the design on top spell’s out my middle name. And when I was little I’d beg my mom to let me wear it, seeing as how it was mine, but she kept insisting that she’d give it to me when she thought I was ready for it. So I stole.” Like children do. “And then promptly lost it.” Served her right.
“Anyway, I didn’t find it again until years later when we were moving out of the house but by that point it actually fit on my ring finger. Not like when I was little and it would’ve slipped right off. And it just struck me that my mom’s this crazy ass lady but she totally knows her shit. Or has some sort of weird pact with the universe to teach me lessons on good behavior.” She shrugged but not without a laugh. “I still have it, even if I can’t really wear it now. It only fits on my pinkie. But it fits and I haven’t lost it yet, so I guess I’m meant to keep it.”
