Heart attacks that weren’t that. Enemies that they didn’t know about? Cass cast a glance at Paul, squinting at him in the sunlight and giving him a once over to make sure she was really talking to the same Paul she met a few weeks ago. Last she checked, people who hated oceanographers didn’t go around killing people and covering it up. Granted, this was his dad, but she couldn’t help but wonder about Paul too.
But he was changing the subject and the last thing she wanted to do was keep poking him with questions and bringing him down. “Please,” she laughed. “I barely see you during the work day! Except to like, ask where everything is and who to watch out for. I haven’t even had a chance to do my usual Get-To-Know spiel over lunch. And we’re neighbors too!” Her hands flew up in an incredulous little flail. “Ugh, I have no excuse. We’re doing this now then.” Cassie nodded curtly; decisions had been made.
“You can ask me anything too. So I don’t feel like a weirdo giving you the third degree.” She gave him a bright smile, hoping that would ease the randomness of her thoughts. “I thought it would be nice to know what you like to do. Outside of saving the world and all.” A beat. “And kicking my ass at Food Network watching,” she added with a wink.
