Unknown the Unlit World of Old
Who: Nyx and Erebos
What: Dream History! Whut?
Where: Dreamland, the Greek Underworld
When: Before recorded history/last night
Warnings: None yet!

She was alone.

This place wasn't real, but it was as she remembered; the very edge of the world, a place that had existed before all else. She remembered her mother, whom she hadn't seen in so much time she'd forgotten what time was. Her children -- all her sweet, beautiful children, all faded away, gone to sleep. She knew they continued to exist, just as she did, but not as they had, and only in memory, in relics.

But this awareness itself indicated that something was changing. She felt herself stirring, she felt the draw of this new world where they didn't know her name. Her legs hung over the edge as she looked down on the half-formed earth, all sea and greyness. She stretched her dark wings, spreading them around her, as though remembering the difference between herself and the mortal body she inhabited.

She was confused; she didn't entirely understand. She knew that Catherine was some part of her, or perhaps the reverse, but it was so difficult to awaken. Sometimes she thought she heard her Erebos' voice, or her sweet Eris', but everything felt half-dreamed and missing.

She was alone.

Her wings closed around her as she pulled her knees to her chest, feeling like the child she hadn't been in so very, very long.

His own power had always been firmly seated in the intangible. He carried a name only so that others had a way to describe the absence of everything he was not. Ever defined by another, Erebos again felt drawn toward a place that was not a place -- toward an entity that was... would always be... his center. He came to her now, more concept than being, more idea than substance, a shadow that settled around her like a cloak. There was a joy in flesh, but they'd always mingled tightest of all essence-to-essence. And, in this form, he felt those things through their primordial connection that she herself felt. In this moment, as he settled himself around her, it was a deep loneliness.

Nyxie.

He said it without sound, without a voice -- but with a tender mocking that gently rejected her confusion and her feeling of abandonment. He could never leave her; by now, she had to know it. He was hers. She was his. This was the truth between them from the beginning of the world below them to the end that stretched far beyond them now. She never had to be alone. All she need do was call him. Even when she didn't call, she drew him near.

Almost reluctantly, then, Erebos pulled himself from the pooling darkness around her and instead took on a form more recognizable. His face was as stern and unforgiving as it ever had been, but his eyes carried a tenderness under the icy green that only those he loved could recognize. And then, because the separation between them was too large, he cinched his arm around her waist and pulled her close against his side.

He didn't say anything to her. Simply held. And looked down below them. He knew this place.

"Ere," she whispered, a smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. Without hesitating, she put her arms around him, nuzzling the crook where his neck and shoulder met. She held him too tightly, afraid he would be gone again, afraid she wouldn't remember, that she would go back to sleep. It was as it had been then, but different. They were clothed differently, their hair was different -- they were modern and they looked like the mortals who housed them, or their mortals looked like them. It had been so long, Nyx couldn't say. What she could say was that it all felt so real, even as she knew it couldn't be. At least, she felt sure of it.

"It feels like it's been... I don't know, Ere. Forever." She held him tighter, kissed his jaw. "Everything's changed. I don't remember -- there's so much I don't remember. Everything's gone."

She pulled back to look at him. "Our homes, Olympos, the children..." she shook her head, then looked back over that edge again.

"Are dreams the only thing left?"

He remained silent, even when she turned those ancient eyes on him. How long had it been since he called her by name, since he looked at her with his own eyes? She fit with him; she filled a space within him. Without her, he preferred the long sleep of eternity. That was where he had been, was it not? His own memory was fragmented as well -- present, but out of focus. Time, he felt, would resolve much of it. For now, he was content to find her. When she kissed his jaw, the corners of his mouth softened and turned upward.

He had no answers for her, but he would find them. Her last question, however...

Sliding a careful hand down one delicate, inky wing, he turned as well and stared down into the world. "We will find them," he said -- not because he knew the future, but because he knew he could make it so. Greater than his love for his Nyxie was his love for their children. He could not have found them without her; he was not complete without her. But now that they were together again, it was different. "I hear Morpheus. Sometimes. From a far distance."

Easily, she settled back next him, their bodies perfectly complementing each other as she shifted, linking her arm with his and resting her head on his shoulder. Her wings shifted as well, out of their way, spreading to cover him as well. When he mentioned Morpheus, she looked up at him, eyes bright.

"Have you?" she asked. "Where is he?"

She laced her fingers with this.

"I'm not certain -- everything seems so muddled -- but I'm certain I've found our Eris. Or perhaps she's found me. I simply... I can't tell exactly what's happening. This new world is so strange, and..."

Shaking her head, she sighed.

"I think I'm living as a mortal, or something like that."

Erebos was quiet for a very long time. He gave his Nyxie's words the appropriate consideration they merited. Elias Sandoa was the name that came to mind immediately in response, along with a hazy recollection of a life. Not his own life, but a simpler one. A quieter one. One with defined limits. A lack of family. No love.

But there were voices behind the voices Elias heard, and one of them was Morpheus. With the boy in the ...

"Apartment. Morpheus is in the apartment -- do you know that word, apartment, Nyxie?"

It was a foreign word. He had never spoken it with his own lips before. But he knew it. "I believe we're both living as mortals," he added. And, squinting into the grayness beneath him, he searched his drowsy memory for more of their family. Nyx had mentioned Eris... Yes. Their daughter was also near, but not as near as Morpheus. Louder, though. Her voice was far stronger. Erebos set his lips thoughtfully against the dark, silky head leaning against him.

What should they do now? Where were they, really?

Her wings fluttered almost imperceptibly as she listened to him, reveling in the small comforts of being near him. It wasn't exactly the same, she knew that. But it had been so long that she could overlook the smallest nuances for the sake of the comfort he brought her.

Even so, her focus was clear enough, and the matter at hand was of clear import.

"Flat," she said softly. "Catherine occasionally calls them flats. Cat."

She nodded thoughtfully. "I don't believe our Eris is in Cat's flat. Apartment. But she has been there. They've eaten together. Her and..."

She wrinkled her nose.

"An Olympian. Eugh. Why would an Olympian be in my Cat's apartment?" She tried to pull details out, but they escaped her but for the simplest ones. It like trying to remember a dream, bits and pieces still vivid, but not quite making sense.

"Something is happening," she murmured. "We must not go back to sleep."

"Ms. St. Giles," he said, remembering something that did not quite belong to him. It was important. But it was not his. Ms. St. Giles. The name, the lady in the dark. She felt like Nyxie. Was that woman's name the name of the mortal through whom Nyxie had found herself living? Then, as another waft of memory breezed through his head, he chuckled - dark velvet over stone, the sound. "Hard-to-get Ms. St. Giles, is it?" He turned and hauled Nyx bodily into his lap, possessively arranging her just so. "She must know all that running is futile."

And with his other half facing him in such an intimate position, now seemed a good time to stop talking. For a long. Warm. Delicious. Moment. Her mouth could never have tasted so sweetly as it did now -- now, after the desert of their separation, their pasts far behind them and the rest of eternity far ahead. He would fight to the ending of the stars to keep them together. If nothing in the waking world but the reticence two foolish mortals separated them now, then the battle was assured. He would have Nyx. He would have her. He told her this in his own way -- without words.

"We will not sleep," he determined, when they parted. A gentle hand brushed the nape of her neck. "We will not. And once we are together again, we will call our children to us."

Nyx shrugged with a gamine smile as he pulled her to him. Cat was quite... resistant. It seemed to Nyx that for the past ten years, the girl'd been devoted to the silliest things. It seemed clear to Nyx that Catherine needed some help... and Nyx felt more and more capable of providing it, the more time she spent near Ere.

She laughed when he moved her, though soon the sound faded in the wake of other distractions.

As he stroked her nape, she leaned forward, resting her head on his shoulder. "Good. There is much to be done, I think," she said thoughtfully. "Much indeed."

It was enough. To know that she was out there. To know that she knew he was out there. And to know that they would be together out there soon. For now, they had this.

And it was enough.
