He followed Lucy in putting his ball down and lining up his shot. Max's face adopted a much more confident and perhaps serious look than had Lucy's, but as his ball rolled down the green, it too looped around the hole to end up five inches away from it.
"Well these things are meant to be harder than they look," he replied, the serious mask he'd been wearing lost in favor of a smile. "I mean, there's a little hill there and it speeds up your ball if you hit it too hard to begin with! And this is just the first hole."
He took up a spot off to the side, waiting for Lucy to take her next turn. In the back of his mind, he couldn't get rid of the thought that she seemed somehow familiar.
"Lucy, we haven't met before, right? Like, were you around the night of the blackout?"
