Being Neighborly
Who: Victor and Vanessa
What: Victor comes to visit Vanessa - their first face to face.
Where: Starting in the hallway outside of 205
When: A little after 8pm.
Warnings: TBA
Notes: So... my first log post. If I do something wrong... please feel free to correct me!

Victor casually buttoned the lowest and middle button of his smooth chocolate colored jacket, leaving the third undone. The relative temperature of the building seemed to be quite pleasant so far, enough that he didn't necessarily need a jacket, but... He liked it. And this was a first impression, after all. So, nice jacket, crisp button down and casual slacks it was. And his boots, which were a touch more worn and beaten, but he always thought that quality leather looked best with a bit of wear.

He had pretty much finished unpacking during the day, organizing the contents of the few personal boxes he had brought along with him and making lists (things to buy for the bathroom, things to buy for the kitchen, things to buy for the fridge). He hadn't been much of a list maker until after his first few years of college. Lists just... made things make more sense. Or at least, help them not just slip away.

Now, two floors down from his new apartment, he stepped up to door 205. Vanessa. Vanessa... in 205, as she had put it.

'Well, Vic,' he thought, 'Time to make friends with the other kids.'

It wasn't that he was nervous, per say, but he hoped that he would be able to have a congenial relationship with the other people living in the building. Only one way to find out...

Clearing his throat lightly, he knocked on the door, three times.

Not one to make lists, or even be likely to remember something she did one hour ago, Vanessa was in her apartment, Frank Sinatra playing loudly from her record player. Some days were meant for classic music like Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, and today was one of those days.

The night is bitter
The stars have lost their glitter
The winds grow colder
Suddenly you're a lot older
And all because of the gal that got away

Vanessa had changed out of the dress she had worn to the salon, and was now in oh so stylish black tee-shirt, purple sweatpants, and a pair of fuzzy lavender clog slippers. Thankfully her makeup was still intact, and her hair was still decent and down in a mop of curls. The bandage on her hand hadn't been changed yet and was currently a few different colors of the rainbow from work. It was currently sporting brown, black, a pumpkiny color, and pink. When she heard the knock, she stopped the record and answered the door, drinking a can of diet coke with a bright pink straw. "Hello?"

"...hello." Victor blinked, one brow quirking up a bit.

So, this was Vanessa in 205. Well. She seemed... quite interesting, so far. He glanced at the can, gaze briefly skirting down to the statement-making (at least, it certainly made a statement to him) slipper... clog... things. Nice choice in music, though. Yes... interesting was a good word.

The edge of his lips quirked a bit as well and he cleared his throat again. "I'm Victor. ...from 405. And... if this is a bad time - well, I can certainly come back... later?"

"Oh!" Vanessa looked down at her obvious pajamas and over at Victor, who was obviously dressed very nicely, a jacket and everything. "No, no! Come right in Victor. I'm glad you stopped by! So often people say they will and just don't for whatever reason. Can I get you something to drink? I have diet coke, some red wine, a beer or two, and water."

"Um.." Victor shrugged, "Water's fine, thank you."

He stepped in to the apartment, wondering if the woman's abode would look anything like her appearance at the front door. People's living spaces, he found, often mirrored their inner minds. It was a fact that he always had found interesting, though he didn't put the theory to test often.

"I'm glad that I've already exceeded your expectations from that of what other people often do."

Vanessa went into the fridge and pulled out a bottle of water, handing it to Victor. "Pajamas are fine to wear around the house, but they definitely aren't okay to be greeting guests in, so if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go change. Make yourself at home and I'll be RIGHT back."

In the living-room she had a large green sofa, the dark cherry coffee table, matching end tables, and of course a decent sized television. The dvd player was finally hooked up, and the dvds were neatly put away in the dvd tower. The living-room was decorated mostly with black and white photos of Miami and New York, but there were also random family pictures she had converted to black and white. The kitchen had a grey table with white cheap chairs, and everything in the kitchen had finally been put away. She had decorated the kitchen with as much pink and floral as possible, she had even bought pink floral kitchen curtains.

Vanessa was torn on what to put on clothes wise, because what she had worn to the salon had been quiet fancy, as usual. She didn't want to appear like she was trying too hard, but it was how she dressed. Instead Vanessa threw on a pair of vintage royal blue bell bottoms and a black short sleeve shirt, opting with socks instead of no shoes, she was inside after all, and the fuzzy worn in slipper just wouldn't do. She adjusted the pants a bit before coming out with a smile. "Better. So where are you from?"

"Thanks," Victor murmured, taking the water bottle. He twisted off the cap, slipping it into his jacket pocket. Before he could take a sip of the water, however, Vanessa was scampering off towards her room.

"Oh," he started, "No need to-" But, she had already disappeared. He hadn't meant for her to feel the need to change. It was her apartment, after all. She could dress however she felt comfortable. Perhaps he should have called first?

Ah well.

Taking the change to look around, and take a small drink of his water, Victor perused the layout of the room. He glanced over her DVD selection for a few moments, then moved on to the room's decorations. She seemed artistically inclined - he liked the black and white photographs particularly. The pink... well - to each their own, but.

As she returned to the room, he turned, one hand slipping into his jacket pocket to fidget with the bottle cap. "You didn't need to change on my account, but." He shook his head. "I'm from Portland. Are you from... either Miami or New York, judging by these photos? I've never been to either place - growing up, I didn't really get to travel much. But I like what you've done with these photographs."

"Oh thank you, I didn't take them, but there's something about black and white photographs that I just love, especially when it's a picture of a building." Vanessa grabbed a beer from the fridge for herself, popping the cap off and taking a drink from it, because why on earth not? "I was born and raised in Miami and then moved to New York when I was older. I'm hoping that California will be the last place I live, but you can never be too I guess. I do love it here though, the weather reminds me a lot of Miami. I don't know much about Portland, that IS in Oregon right?"

Vanessa sat down on the couch to make herself more comfortable, crossing her legs, and patting the couch for Victor to sit down.

Victor nodded. "I do enjoy the stark nature of black and white photography. There is something very... honest about them. And you are very right - in architecture, it seems to really bring the character of the buildings to life. I like it with nature and lifestyle photography as well though."

He chuckled. "Yes, Oregon, though there is another Portland in Maine. I always forget to specify which. 'My' Portland was the only one that I'm use to thinking of."

Still smiling, he moved to sit beside Vanessa, leaving a polite bit of space between them. He was her guest, after all, and they had only just met. "Why all the moving around? If you don't mind my asking."

"They remind me of old black and white movies, like Marlon Brando or Marilyn Monroe should be in front of the building, smiling up at you." She looked at one picture in particular of Rockafeller Center and smiled fondly, remembering ice skating there and falling flat on her face.

"I moved away from Miami because my ex husband left me for someone quite younger and to be honest, I just didn't want all of those old memories haunting me everywhere I went. New York seemed like somewhere nice, somewhere I SHOULD enjoy, so I went. I enjoyed it for quite some time, but eventually the weather got to me. To be honest I just kind of wound up here in California, I still don't know quite how it happened. What brings you here?"

"Ah... I'm sorry. About your ex, that is." He took a small sip of his water. "That's understandable, though," turning the bottle around a few times in his hand, he watched the water through the small opening at the top. He couldn't really make any judgement for anyone running away from their past, right? "About leaving Miami. Not about him leaving..." He blinked. "It was his loss. You seem like a very... vibrant person, Miss Vanessa."

It really wasn't like him to pry too much into people's personal lives right off the bat. It wasn't that he didn't like to know - he did, but... he didn't like being rude, either. And usually, people liked their secrets. Not that he didn't take some pleasure in... figuring those secrets out, but, this woman seemed rather forthcoming. He was a complete stranger and she just sat him down on her couch and was already telling him about the pains of her past. He smiled a bit.

"What brought me here..." The smile faded rapidly. "I guess it's for similar reasons. ...old memories. And... I just kind of wound up here." He turned the bottle around a few more times in his hand. "I didn't really have a place in mind, but I wanted to get a fresh start - get out of Portland. And... I ended up here. So... here I am. Fresh start." Not as... forthcoming as her answer had been, but...

"Oh, it happens. To be honest I never should've married him to begin with. He was my high school sweetheart, and it was a dumb mistake to marry him so quickly, high school sweethearts almost NEVER work out. It's understandable that I left, but I'm SO done with running away from my problems, it's a bad habit to get into, and moving is obnoxious."

Vanessa smiled as he complimented her, or at least, she thought it was a compliment. Being called very vibrant, with a bit of a pause could've been taken either way, but she WAS different, that she refused to deny. She liked the fact that she was different and vibrant. "Thank you Victor. I'm sorry similar reasons brought you here, but if anyone understands, I do."

"So it would seem." He smiled. Victor wondered if he should give her his story as she had just so openly done. She seemed... very nice.

"I've never been married, but..." he let the sentence trail. What was he suppose to say? 'It wasn't because of a failed marriage, just the fact that my father died in a terrible accident and I lived and I couldn't shake the intense feelings of guilt and grief and practically gave up on my life until I decided maybe I should try and get it together and move on somewhere else?' Yeah. That would go over great.

Chuckling a bit, he just shook his head. "Yeah. Running away..." he seemed to think about it for a moment or two. "...is obnoxious." Looking at her, he lifted his water bottle. "Well. Cheers. To fresh starts. And to not running away any more."

Vanessa couldn't help but feel that Victor wasn't telling her something, he clearly had a story to tell of his own that he was holding back. Of course not everyone was as ridiculously open as she was, in fact she often wondered if she should stop sharing everything with near strangers, it was a bad habit. "Cheers." Vanessa lifted her beer up to his water and smiled.

"I think you'll like it here. So far everyone I've met seems really friendly."

"I think I'll like it here too." And... he really, honestly did. Anything beat back in Portland, at least. And somehow, this place... All of it seemed right.

"If everyone else is anywhere as nice as you, I'll know I'll be set."

"Hmm... You seem quite nice to me." He smiled a little wider, though it couldn't quite be called a grin.

Swirling the water around the bottle, he shrugged. "I don't want to impose. I did come over basically unannounced and I could tell that you were in the process of winding down from your day."

"Oh stop, impose away. If I didn't want you to impose, I wouldn't offer you a drink, and I certainly wouldn't be drinking in front of you. Besides, normally I'd be at work tonight, the very opposite of unwinding, so I'll be awake for quite awhile anyway. Would you like beer or wine Victor?"

"I absolutely do." Maybe it was the Nephthys in her that felt the need to shove liquor in Victor's hand, and she had always been a great bartender for that reason, she was always able to convince people to drink 'just one more.' She smiled and stood up, walking over to the fridge, pouring him a glass of red wine in a very fancy paper cup. "sorry, my real wine glasses broke in the move."

That did earn a short, but full laugh from Victor. "Oh no... I can't drink wine out of a cup!" But he stood, moving to meet her by the kitchen.

He found himself more and more intrigued by Vanessa. Oddly comfortable, but also just the tiniest touch on edge. Well... the prettiest of roses often did have the sharpest of thorns, after all.

"Oh but it's the epitome of CLASS, let me tell you. Just pretend that you're in New Orleans and you have to drink from the cup out on the streets, it'll make it feel better." She laughed and chugged her beer now that she had drinking company.

Taking up his wine glass - er, wine cup... Victor nodded. "Huh. I'll try that. See if it works." He eyed the cup suspiciously for a moment. "Hmm... don't think it's working."

Still smiling though, he took a sip. "It's very nice. Thank you Vanessa..." He stopped. "I don't think you've told me your last name yet."

"It's Veneto." There was something very, very strange about drinking with this man, something she couldn't exactly put her finger on. Also he was an extremely attractive man, well dressed, polite, seemingly successful, and there was 0 wish to flirt with him, in fact it almost seemed wrong to try to. Vanessa finished her beer and got up to throw it away in the kitchen trash can. "You're quite welcome. What was your last name again?" She looked in the fridge and paused, unsure if she wanted another beer. After a moment or two she decided to give in and opened another one up.

"Veneto." Victor repeated. Vanessa Veneto.

He watched her contemplate getting another beer, lips quirking a little at her decision. She was, indeed, intriguing. But it seemed, somehow, that there was more. Victor couldn't quite put his finger on it, a feeling that made him all the more intrigued.

He had heard people talking about meeting someone that it felt as if they had "known forever", but he had never really experienced it. Perhaps this was that feeling. But it wasn't, really, a romantic feeling. Just... familiar. Comfortable. Almost comforting. Almost.

"Ah, it's Theson." He answered her.

Vanessa went back over to the couch, but instead, sat on the arm of the couch on the other side from Victor, looking at him. "So one of these days you're going to tell me the reason you left Portland okay?" She just went right to it didn't she? Really there was no reason to waste any time in life, you had to say what you wanted to say.

Blinking, Victor nodded. He wasn't always this transparent, he knew for a fact. Maybe it really was that... feeling. Suddenly, he wondered if she felt it too. That... familiarity.

"Yeah." he said, nonchalantly anyway. "Yeah. It's just..." Taking a long sip of wine, he sighed. "It's... kinda personal. Not that what you told me wasn't. I'm just... I guess I'm not use to talking to people about it." That was true, at least. He hated lying to people, and people that lied. He wouldn't become a liar, even for his own shame, but. But... that didn't mean he had to talk about it, either.

He sat back down on the couch, staying on the side he had been on. "I promise I'll tell you, sometime."

"I haven't exactly told you my life story believe it or not Victor, trust me, I'm not judging you at all. I'm just saying, I'm a good person to blab that stuff to if you ever feel the need." Vanessa had felt a strange familiarity with three people now. With Idris it was almost a dangerous feeling, with Audrey is had been a comfort thing, and with Victor it was also comfortable, but weird somehow. For some reason this one actually did unnerve her a bit.

"Alright, alright. I said I would. I will. I'm just... not that chatty, I guess you could say, about myself." Which was true, but... he felt... odd, still. This woman...

Finishing up his wine, he put the paper cup on the end table beside him. "I think you're an excellent person. And probably also good to talk to."

Standing, he exhaled. "But... I should probably head back up to my place." He was getting the feeling that Vanessa was just a bit uncomfortable. He wasn't... uncomfortable, but he still couldn't place the feeling he was getting, and it was starting to get to him a little bit. He would think on it over some red wine of his own.

Normally Vanessa would've stopped him, but this feeling of being comfortable with the third person in a row from Pax really was starting to freak her out. "I'm sorry, it's been a long day sorry if I'm a little grumpy. I haven't been able to bartend for the last few days because I burnt my hand. Would you like some wine for the road? I'll fill up your classy cup and you can take some up just like New Orleans."

Victor shook his head a bit. "Oh, no. I'm fine, thank you." He was about ready to go anyhow - with the feeling he was getting - both the strange one and the one a person gets just a few moments before they may start to over-wear their welcome.

"I hope that you get some rest. For your hand's sake, as well as your sanity." He stood, smiling. "Thank you for taking the time to meet me. It was a pleasure."
