Lucy gave the other woman a smile as well, though hers was much bigger. When Lucy smiled,it was the sort of smile that took up your whole face and crinkled the corners of your eyes. She didn't mind if people didn't return the gesture.
"Hi," she said brightly, ignoring the whole you don't talk to people on the elevator rule. She'd never understood that one. What was wrong with people on elevators?
Of course, breaking that taboo did not always go well for her. Sometimes she was ignored, other times, she was given weird looks. This time? The elevator itself protested and groaned to a halt, throwing her off balance. One hand went to anchor her hat to her head, the other gripped the rail that ran around the elevator in an attempt to steady herself. After the initial jolt, it was uncomfortably quiet inside the car. That big smile of hers disappeared really quick.
