She made no reply, instead grabbing the documents as he shoved them at her through the door; there was the kitchen counter space right next to the front door, and she dumped the lot of it there (the door to her right still open enough to allow this stranger a full view of what she was doing), spreading it out as she struggled to make some sense of everything that was suddenly being piled on her. It seemed like every time there was some sort of balance in her life, however minimal, something would arrive to throw it off. Two things quickly became clear - first was the painful realization of just how happy everyone was in these photos, from the smiling, proud parents (one of them quite clearly her own mother, the woman she remembered from so long ago) to the happy baby, moving through various milestones that Madeleine hadn't deemed important enough to stick around for with Charlie. She mentally shoved such pitiful thoughts aside, not wanting to give anyone the satisfaction of upsetting her.
The second realization was the striking similarity that the little boy in the photos had with the one pictured in the locket she'd received from those who'd managed her mother's estate. She hesitated to pull out the necklace, instead wisely leaving it at rest in the bowels of her kitchen drawers; there was indeed enough evidence here to prove what the boy was saying. Jack, meanwhile, had taken it upon himself to squeeze through the small crevice the door provided, sticking halfway out and performed a through sniffing of Dov, as though performing his own type of inspection. Nothing in the dog's posture said anything about an attack on the newcomer, just simple curiosity toward something he had not experienced.
Leaning on the counter, she took in a deep breath before looking over at the little boy standing outside of her apartment.
"All right. Let's say I believe you. What the hell do you want from me?" Amazingly her voice didn't waver, didn't crack; it held its note of anger throughout, clear and amazingly precise, since that was nowhere near how she felt.
