Out on the Town
Who: Julian and Vanessa
What: A fun night out on the town
Where: Pax Lobby
When: Sunday Night
Warnings: None as of yet

Vanessa had taken a big risk asking absolutely anyone in the community if they wanted to go out and show her the town, so she was grateful someone she had already talked to at least here and there online had responded. He was the owner of a nightclub and seemed like a decent guy. What was even better was the fact that he knew this town and where to go. Vanessa had a feeling that she was in for a fun night.

After trying on about 10 different dresses, Vanessa settled for an off white vintage 1920s dress. It was one sleeveless delicate floral embroidered piece that wasn’t form fitting, but wasn’t exactly loose either. The straps were see through, and the dress ended with an uneven flowing hemline. She wore a pair of simple buckled black mary janes with the dress. Not having much time, she simply put her curly hair up in a clip. Despite the fancy dress, the overall look was comfortable and casual. She made it down to the lobby in not much time at all.

There was something about Julian that set Vanessa’s radar off. This was the type of guy she usually went for, someone sweet, chivalrous and probably decently well off. There was something too good to be true about him, and she was suddenly glad that she saw this as strictly a night out with a new potential friend. Julian was one of those guys that were just too good to be true. She laughed and looked at her pasty white skin as he commented on his own tan, or lack thereof. You would never know that she lived in California based on her skin. “As much as I would love some sun, if I want to save money, I can’t make a habit of skipping work to go to the beach. Before I know it, I’d be out of one, if not two jobs.”

Vanessa looked out the window briefly, enjoying the view as they rode to the wharf. This was a beautiful area for sure. “I love it so far, it reminds me a lot of where I grew up, except the people here are a hell of a lot nicer.”

He gave a brief nod of acknowledgement - of anyone Vanessa could be talking to regarding work, Julian was probably the best candidate. He couldn't count how much time and effort he'd put into CASKET, and he certainly couldn't fathom abandoning his baby for a quick day on the beach. "That's a good attitude, I think - I mean, how else are you going to end up with that salon one day? It's back breaking work, but I always thought it was worth it." The car took a few turns, and pulled into the parking lot of their destination. It was dark out already, but Julian could see lights and the muted sound of voices coming from within the restaurant. He had mixed feelings coming here, all of a sudden, but he did his best to not show second thoughts. He was just here for a good time, no strings attached, and he'd deal with the fallout should his wife find out. He knew he'd done it a dozen times before.

"Well I hope you brought your thirst, this place has some great liquor," he commented, before getting out of the driver's side door and going around to let Vanessa out.

“Sometimes I really do think that the salon is a lost cause and that I’ll never open one up, and sometimes I wonder if I really want all of that responsibility. I know it’s a lot, and while I want it, part of me doesn’t know if I can handle it. Of course the only way to know for sure is to try I guess right?” Vanessa smiled as Julian opened the door for her, such a gentleman. It was like he was from a different time period. She couldn’t help but think that he belonged in the twenties, the era her dress had come from, instead of the 21st century. “Since you drove, my thirst is definitely present.”

The place looked great from the outside, and she liked that she could already see the lights and excitement. “If you ever go to New York or Miami, let me know and I’ll definitely return this favor by telling you some good spots.”

"Believe me, I would most definitely take you up on the offer," he replied with a smile, glad to see that she was willing to return tit for tat. That was how Julian operated in life - you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours. Sometimes, though, he got his back scratched a lot more often.

"And I know what you mean about the business," he continued as they strolled through the filled parking lot, heading toward the front door of the restaurant/dance hall. "It's a constant uphill battle, but you just have to keep fighting it. It'll happen eventually, or at least that's what I kept telling myself!" He left out the note that having a supportive spouse was another boon, but since no one at Pax knew about her just yet, he believed it was better to let sleeping dogs lie.

Upon reaching the front doors of Woody's Wharf, he held it open for his companion for the evening, instantly blasting them both with the sound of the band and of loud conversation.

"I can be scatter brained about some things, but fabulous night spots I never forget. Hell, I probably still have my address book with great take out joints from New York AND Miami. I'd be glad to help." Vanessa hated feeling useless, and being shown around a new city did make her feel that way sometimes, so she was glad to have so many nice people right in her apartment!

As the doors held open, Vanessa laughed happily. It had been awhile since she had gone out like this, and she was already absolutely thrilled. "Well, it looks like you were right," she shouted (just enough to be heard) as she walked through the door. "I can already tell this place is amazing."

"It's more the people that make a place memorable, rather than the place itself," he commented, following behind her and giving a glance around the room. It was full to the brim, mostly due to the late hour and the weekend, though it was still somewhat surprising for a night spot to be this busy on a Sunday night. Julian knew from experience that it was like this most nights, and he'd chatted up the owner often enough to glean a few secrets of getting people coming back often. Mainly a comfortable setting and good food, but decent prices didn't hurt either. After a long day of work, most people wanted to drop their office masks and socialize, and both CASKET and Woody's Wharf offered ample space to do such things.

Gently placing a hand on the small of Vanessa's back (and doing so lightly, so as to not be accused of manhandling or pushy) he gave a careful signal to head toward the bar, where he'd get them started on a round of drinks. He ordered something simple, a Captain Morgan with lime squeezed into it. Motioning for Vanessa to make her own order, he leaned on the counter with an elbow while he sipped his rum and studied the crowd.

"I'll have a Southern Comfort old fashioned please." Not really simple at all, but she did love Southern Comfort. Unlike a lot of girls that loved fru-fru drinks with little umbrellas, Vanessa had an old love for brown liquors, scotch, whiskey, bourbon, alcohol, basically she drank like a 60 year old man. When Vanessa got her drink, she stirred it around a bit with the little black straw and took a slow sip. "Thanks for coming out tonight. It's hard to make friends in a new area, no matter how outgoing you are."

Julian's gaze flicked back to Vanessa, and he nodded.

"Oh, I agree. Everyone always says it's a two way street, but it's never the case, is it?" He swirled the rum in its glass, gently, looking comfortable and not a touch out of place within the busy night club. "Put yourself out there as much as you like, and other people never need to take note. Selfish beings, humans are." He took another swallow of the hard alcohol, eyes drifting down to her dress; not in a sexual manner, but in one taking note of something unusual.

"So you have to tell me - is that a knock-off, or do you trawl every vintage shop here this side of Los Angeles?"

"This one actually is the real thing. I have a very bad weakness for vintage clothes, have for a very long time. I do have a lot of dresses that are knock offs, but this one happens to be real. It has some subtle wear and tear to it, but otherwise, it's still good. They don't make clothes to last like this anymore. Sometimes people don't quite know what to make of my style, or as they like to say, my lack of style, but I dress for myself, not everyone else."

He nodded, listening intently to Vanessa as she spoke.

"That's a rare quality of confidence, though," he noted, taking another sip of his drink, feeling the hard liquor run down his throat and into his belly. Maybe food would have been a better idea first, but he'd just have to take it slow. "Now just take that, and apply it to the business you have in mind, and I don't think you'd have many problems." The drink was down to halfway, and though Julian had built up a decent tolerance over the years, he was starting to feel a slight warmth.

"Or if you're still feeling uncertain, maybe switch to a vintage clothes store? You seem - and look - to have a knack for it."

Vanessa took a sip of her drink, playing with a bit of orange pulp with her straw, moving it up and around the edge of the glass as she listened. The drink was also hitting her and she doubted she would have very many drinks tonight. As Julian suggested she own a vintage clothing shop, all she could do was look at him for a few seconds. It was the most simple, obvious suggestion ever, yet she had never thought of it, and probably never would’ve thought of it. She would have to do research on how to get enough clothes to start up her business, but she had confidence that she could do it, where there was a will, there was a way, and knock offs, while imitation, would be a great place to start. “That’s a brilliant suggestion; I can’t believe I’ve never thought of it. You’re very inspiring, thank you.”

Julian polished off his drink, setting the empty glass back on the bar while straightening so his other hand could fish out his wallet. A quick smile flashed at Vanessa, shaking his head.

"Not that I try to be, but it's always a help if you're quick on your toes in any business," he replied easily, sliding a few bills at the bar tender to cover both of their drinks.

"What say you and I hit the floor a little?" He continued, moving from one subject to the next easily. Drinks paid for, Julian extended a free hand to Vanessa while his brows rose on his face, waiting for her response. He wanted to get moving a little, feel a little more alive - standing around sipping drinks and talking business, while he enjoyed both, was neither very lively in his mind on either account.

"Of course I'll dance," and they definitely danced. She was loving her new home more and more as she danced with Julian. She had already met such fabulous people and she had been in California less than a month. Julian and Vanessa danced until it was finally time to call it a night. Vanessa thanked him about a million times for the fabulous night, and felt horrible that she had doubted him at any point in the night.
