Her hands gripped the edge of the counter once more, eyes suddenly wandering away like a child who was being caught out at doing something they shouldn't have. Her face dropped down and she heaved a sigh, being far more dramatic than necessary, before giving a simple nod.
"Yeah." The word was spoken sadly before Charlie seemed to pull herself together and make some kind of a decision. She rolled her shoulders and looked up to meet Cat in the eye.
"I don't understand why he wants that, with me. If things change like that, they can't really change back, can they? We've been friends for a long time, it works, we know what to expect from each other an' all that. That changes and what if he thinks he doesn't want that, that he was wrong? Or maybe I think I don't want it.
"I don't want to hurt him, I already done that an' I don't like myself for it. I mean, I make mistakes, a lot of 'em, an' I screw things up all the time. I'm tryin' to do a good thing, here, stoppin' this before it starts." It was quite possibly the longest sentence or explanation she'd given to anyone, and it was heartfelt. It also suggested at other things, more explanations that would explain the difficulties Charlie apparently saw in such a relationship with Rylee.
