Mr. Sandman
Who: Adam and James
What: Awkward dreams are so totally awkward
Where: ... Dreamland?
When: August 4th, @ night
Warnings: The goal is for smut. At least it is for me.

James had gotten rid of a lot of his things during the past ten years. Traveling would do that to a person; you realize what is essential to your life and what is not. So upon moving into Pax he only had the essentials. Nice, decent furniture. A nice collection of liquor bottles and a portable bar of sorts. Track supplies, although he didn't partake in the sport on a serious level he still enjoyed running and doing field activities, and then his more secretive stash of belongings. The CD collection and books he loved were neatly piled under his bed. No one would know about them unless they looked and really, why would anyone be looking around under his bed? If he had anyone in his room he would probably have them too distracted to be nosey.

But after checking in with Alex and unpacking the last box of books, James figured he'd go to bed early. Why not? He had a couple of days off before getting into the swing of things with his job and was tired. He didn't know anyone other than Alex and he wanted to be well rested before he made his rounds and got people to know him. He had been at this apartment for nearly a week and he was beginning to feel the need to have the typical following he was used to.

Slipping off his clothing he climbed into bed and quickly felt sleep pulling him away from the present world and into the strange realms of his mind. Almost immediately he began to dream, of colder climates with snow and ice, and a familiar face from his past that made his heart jump and quiver.

It was rare that Adam felt aware of his dreams. Work kept him too busy to sleep fitfully, the exhaustion of the day blessing him with a kind of easy, effortless rest when at last he slipped between his sheets. Only a calming blackness remained of the night when he awoke, not a single wayward thought distracting him from the day to come.

Tonight would be different. Adam realized that not when he first lay down, but soon after; his eyes had drifted shut, heavy with torpor, but what came was not the darkness he recalled. It was cold here, strangely illuminated and bright, and the silhouette he saw - though memorable, impossibly so - was the last he might have expected.

It was a dream, at least, and so his logic followed the sort any dream-logic might. The cold climes, the likes of which he had never lived near, much less in, were less strange to him than the appearance of this ghost from his past - but neither proved odd enough to deter him from drawing nearer, his hopes of gaining some sort of understanding growing with every step. He furrowed his brow, his unhurried gait carrying him ever closer to the one acquaintance Adam had never truly been comfortable labeling. Whether he was friend or foe, even here, in his own dream, remained to be seen. He stopped a pace away, just shy of arm's length. When he spoke, all his hesitation, all his uncertainty lay bare in his soft tone.

"James."

James wore fur lined boots which his dark pants were tucked into, a thick sweater, a jacket, and his naked hands wedged deep into pants pockets. He turned fully in the crunching snow and grinned. "Adam, funny seeing you here," he joked slightly and freely looked the man over. For whatever reason, it didn't matter that he was doing this, he felt that it was entirely alright in this location in the depths of his mind.

He took a few casual steps closer to Adam and arched his neck to look around the wilderness they seemed to have been placed. Typically when James dreamed it was brief, it lacked detail and was either a nightmare or something familiar and present on his mind during his woken hours. But this was something new. He hadn't necessarily thought of Adam and he certainly wasn't thinking about snow and cold locations. Everything was too bright, it all felt too real, and he felt somewhat different. Like there were others there, maybe, or maybe not. He also felt like he was searching for something, trying to find the memory of something that happened but it had been forgotten.

"You look... healthy," James said with a smirk. He had a few other choice words he could use to describe how Adam looked.

It was an odd choice of words, though Adam would have been even more surprised to hear what his old friend did not say. But these things, for now, remained unsaid, and their conversation moved forward, if in a stilted sort of way. "Thanks," he said, the wind whipping the word from his pale, thinned lips. He did not move away, did not flinch beneath the clear appraisal, though he felt each step James took toward him so keenly the hair at the nape of his neck stood on end. He drew a shallow breath, his tongue flicking out at a snowflake fallen to his lips as he thought of what to say. Chill flecks of white settled on his black fur collar, speckling the dark fabric across his narrow shoulders. For all the snow surrounding them Adam felt no sense of cold; he stuffed his hands into his coat pockets more to still their restlessness than from any sense of tangible, physical discomfort.

"It's been a while." He smiled, soft and guarded, hesitation still guiding his every move. His black eyes followed his friend's wandering gaze, scouring their surroundings for something familiar. "I hadn't really expected to see you again." He looked back to James, then up to the sky, the small gesture encompassing all around them. "Least of all here," he added, though precisely where was 'here' he could not have begun to guess. But even as the words passed his lips he knew they were wrong; they belonged where they were, in this frozen woodland, and something had brought them to it to show them that very truth. But this revelation Adam immediately cast aside, too uncertain of the situation immediately before him to try to address anything more.

James grinned at Adam, gazing at him for a second too long before he looked around them. "Well, the world has a funny way of working things, doesn't it? But you shouldn't be too surprised to be seeing me. It was meant to happen."

His eyes gleamed as he looked at Adam again then began to slowly circle him, turning his gaze to the surrounding landscape once more and taking it all in. He licked his lips, enjoying the cold air on his face, and let out a large enough of a breath that it crystalized and hung in the air. He stopped in front of Adam after making a slow circle and flicked at Adam's coat. "Still wearing so many dark colors and still quiet. But I guess it's only natural for you. Kind of like this place is. It feels right to be here."

He arched his eyebrows, looking to Adam for him to agree. Standing with his feet apart he crossed his arms over his chest, breathing in the cold air and smiling once more. It did feel right. It felt like he had been searching for a place to feel comfortable in and finally had found it.

"And you're still as sure of yourself as ever." There was no judgment when he spoke; indeed, his tone almost sounded pleased, nostalgia lending a softness to his voice.

Adam felt the warmth of James' hand through the cloth of coat and shirt, realizing even as he did that was impossible. Still, the pass of his hand was impossible to ignore: faint pressure, a familiar touch, a liberty he had no right to take. Still, Adam did not move away. His eyes fell to his friend's - friends? At once it felt like the right word, and not - hands as he considered his answer. It was not a question to be taken lightly; of that much he was certain.

What he felt in that snow-blasted country, surrounded by trees of impossible height and width, ancient beyond measure, was a kind of comfort that went soul-deep. Something in this place called to him, as did something in his friend; it went far deeper than flesh, was older than their stormy and complicated past together. He felt a kinship with him, though not of the fraternal sort, a tumultuous kind of draw shot through with something dark. It was not fear, but simple knowledge: the certainty of doom.

"It does," he said, an inexplicable sadness bleeding into his voice. "I think I've been here before. With you." The last somehow sounded like a question, though Adam was not certain that was how he intended it.

There was a devilish glint in James' eyes as he gave a slow nod. "Yes, I think we have been here before. Together. But whether it was always snowing like this, I'm unsure. I feel like we've been here through an assortment of seasons."

He turned his gaze away from Adam and looked over the landscape. He could easily see this land being covered in green grass and a gentle, but warmer breeze drifting by. But the cold snowy climate seemed perfectly fine as well. He breathed in the air, enjoying it's crispness for a moment before returning his gray eyes to meet Adam's. "Why so motionless? Are you not comfortable around me, Adam?" His smile was almost sinister as he took another step closer to his friend. "We haven't seen one another in years. There isn't a smile from you, no friendly embrace, not even an 'it's nice to see you'?"

James pouted slightly but there was still a spark in his eyes that seemed unlikely to fade any time soon.

Adam did not quite know what to make of that expression. Too many times over the years he had seen it employed for uses many and varied, and not just by his old friend James. It was unsettling on a deep, animal level, a fact compounded by James' new proximity: They were so close now that the slightest shift in posture brushed them against one another, a motion at once feather-light and strangely forceful. Adam could not have said how it had happened, but at some point he had lost all control of this interaction, once again at James' mercy, playing thoughtlessly into his hands. But he took not a single step back, even straightening up as he fought to show a certainty he did not feel.

"It is good to see you," he said, though the moment the words slipped free, Adam wondered if they were true. "Just... a surprise," he added, equivocating. With marked effort he kept his black eyes on his friend's, unblinking in spite of the discomfort his steady gaze caused. At last he quirked a broader smile, attempting to laugh, at least, at his own boyish awkwardness. "So what brings you back," he asked, "after all this time?"

James' smirk only continued, his eyes sparkling as he looked down at the younger man while they stood in such a close proximity to one another. "I'm not quite sure what brings me back here. I mean... where ever we are. But it's right to be back here and it seems perfectly right to be here with you."

As he spoke he leaned down towards Adam, his grin almost hungry as he refused to pull his gaze from Adam's own. His voice grew soft, huskier as he spoke and became closer and closer to Adam's face, then they were eye level, the smallest of space between their lips. This was a dream after all so James could do whatever he wanted.

"Doesn't it feel right?" He asked then leaned in gently to place a kiss on Adam's lips. He had wanted to do that since he had hit puberty and it caused an excitement in James that he had not felt previously with anyone else whether male or female. Pulling back a hair he grinned again. "To be here, the both of us, together?"

"I..." Ordinarily Adam prided himself on his cool head, on carefully measuring his responses before blindingly giving into them. But in that moment he was so taken aback, so surprised by what had transpired, that the neatly chosen words he so frequently relied upon now failed him utterly. His tongue slipped out, passing over his still-slick lips, tasting the echo of his friend's skin on that soft swell. It did not seem strange that the taste reminded him so of Alex, calling back vivid memories of the few intimate moments they had shared over the course of the last year. He swallowed hard, noting with marked displeasure both the rising lump in his throat and the burgeoning arousal he felt, whose origins he knew but could hardly speak now. It was enough that his pulse moved quicker now, his heart hammering in his chest for reasons too numerous to count. In a moment of carelessness his shoulders slumped, a slow, deep exhalation shifting his posture, drifting his body closer to James'.

"I guess it does." The words brushed his lips a hair's breadth from James', each syllable a warm gust of breath passing between them both. Adam knew what he wanted to ask, but for a time he held his silence, not entirely sure he wanted the answer, but impossibly curious all the same.

"What is it you want, James?"

Another flash of teeth, a grin, but something vicious behind it as James kept his face close to Adam's. "You really can't tell? After all this time?" He kissed Adam once more, holding his lips to the other mans for a longer period of time and flicking his tongue forward to taste Adam, if only a little.

He pulled back with an abrupt laugh. "Is this making you angry, Adam? Or are you enjoying this? Because... I think you are. At least from what I can tell." He grinned again, this time it was teasing. With one smile James could have a million emotions placed on display. "I've wanted the same thing for the past twenty years. Here I thought I would've forgotten or it would have changed but apparently I was wrong. Why else would I be dreaming of you?" He let out a short breath and shook his head, suddenly annoyed. Twenty years and he did think he had forgotten Adam. He thought he was in the clear of this silly crush but apparently there wasn't the case.

Though the cold in the air had not bothered Adam even a little, that wicked grin of his friend's set a chill racing down his spine. He shuddered, checking the motion a moment too late. All these years he had never suspected these things, had never imagined that the boy who had tormented and protected him with equal fervor wanted something from him he was not prepared to give. It cast all their shared experiences into a new light, calling into question every interaction, every word and look that had ever passed between them. He wondered if Alex knew. Quickly he dismissed that thought, as if merely thinking her name might make her party to this, might drag her into something in which she had no real part. But in spite of the tangled emotions Adam felt in light of this revelation, a single thought remained: If this truly was a dream, distantly removed from all reality, Adam might grant him here what he could not elsewhere. He looked back to James, then, trying to read that enigmatic expression.

"I don't know what to think," he said at last. He reached out a pale hand - noting James' sudden flash of what seemed, at least, like anger, though at which of them it was directed Adam could not rightly tell - and curved thin fingers around his friend's arm. "I didn't know..." He sighed, lips pursing as he wondered what to do. At last he made his choice. It was, after all, just a dream, and someone else's, besides. Or so he told himself.

He leaned up to James, his hand tightening on the other man's thick, muscled arm. Closing the distance between them, his body pressed flush to his friend's, he covered James' mouth with his own, and shut out the thought of Alex's softer, sweeter taste as he parted her brother's lips with his tongue.

Eyebrows shooting up, James was incapable of hiding his surprise when Adam closed the distance between them in such a way. So often James had dreamt that he kissed Adam. In his waking hours he would fantasize about it. But never had he been able to picture Adam making a move. It was something he seemed incapable of doing. But this... his lips pressed hard against his and the twisting of their tongues as they met... made James absolutely sure that this was all a dream.

His surprise was momentary, James quickly regained control over himself, but only to the point of allowing himself to reach for Adam and grip his shoulders tightly as James kissed him harder. A moment passed and a tentative hand reached for Adam's hair. He had always wanted to touch the boys hair. Despite all the teasing that Adam had hair similar to a porcupine it was only to cover up that James liked his hair. He wanted to touch it, run his hands through it, see if it was course or soft, and he took this opportunity in this dream he created to do just that.

Where James' shock began to fade, Adam's had not abated in the least. His own forwardness, his embracing of this odd behavior even in the safety of this dream-state, had left him feeling somewhat off kilter. But this feeling only deepened as James' hand in his hair and the hard warmth of his body brought to mind something entirely unexpected. It took him back to Valentine's Day, to a strange crush whose nature he still could not begin to understand, whose mere inception was an anomaly in Adam's life. To date Philip had not paid him the least bit of attention; Adam's heart beat harder to think of it. The memory spurred him on as idle curiosities swam through his thoughts, comparing the two men, noting how different Alex felt in his arms, wondering if James' thoughts now ran parallel to his own when in her presence. The thought brought a sigh to his lips, silenced by the slide of the other man's tongue over his. Thoughtlessly his head canted to James' touch, his shoulders going lax in his unforgiving grip, his body unwittingly moving as his friend bid.

James hand moved from Adam's hair and slid down his body, he gripped Adam's shoulders, then his arms, and his hands traveled down the man's back and to his rear all the while keeping themselves connected by their lips. Then he pulled away, gasping for air and his eyes seemed darker as he looked down at Adam with some surprise.

"Some dream," James muttered as he looked over Adam. "This is the only place I can have you, isn't it?" He allowed himself to show his emotions in this landscape. His sorrow appeared on his face because he was sure his assumptions were true. Adam wouldn't have him outside of this place. And so what if Adam saw him sad? This was his dream, he could do whatever he wanted, it wasn't like the real Adam would know.

He reached for Adam once more, but his movements were gentle as he ran his hand through Adam's hair, his frown still prominent on his face. No, he wasn't lucky enough to get this in the real world.

Adam swallowed hard, his throat suddenly, impossibly dry. Beneath his clothes his skin felt flush, the passage of James' hands marked by a persistent and unrelenting tingling. Some measure of his friend's expression seemed to bleed into his own, for wholly different reasons; the vulnerability Adam saw in him now was as surprising as it was sincere. It contrasted sharply with the image of him Adam had always held. More, it felt like something private, something to which he should perhaps not play the voyeur. But he had not asked to come here, and he could not now dictate what happened in this hidden realm.

He drew a deep breath, shaking his head. For a brief moment, seeing that look, feeling the tenderness he had never expected from this particular quarter, Adam wished he had any answer but this. "I'm sorry, James." Then, as if to soften the blow, he moved closer still, pressing a kiss to the swell of his lower lip. His hand moved to James' waist, sliding up beneath his clothes, pale fingers seeking out the hard, hot line of his hip. His touch moved as it might have with Alex; the same uncertainty was in the pass of his fingers, the same sense of careful exploration.

Adam's hands, that were somehow warm despite the cold climate, still created a chill up James' body. He let out a breath into Adam's waiting mouth and his hands hovered over Adam's body for a brief moment before he reached out and grabbed on.

His kissed him hard, closing his eyes tightly as he tried to memorize every moment, and an arm slipped around Adam's shoulders. If he took note of every second that passed, maybe he would remember this when he woke, maybe it would be enough to satisfy his urge and he could move on with his life. He had a thought to thank Adam for this but only made a small laugh deep within his throat as the thought passed. He always knew Adam was soft and caring but he hadn't realized that he was this sweet. Or was it only the dream tormenting James to believe Adam wasn't interested but was sacrificing his comfort so that James could experience something he had, as was proof in this moment, only dreamed of?

James wasn't going to stop to ask questions but only continued to kiss Adam while his hands traveled over his friends body as he memorized the feel of him.

Adam gave himself over to it, sinking sleepily into James' embrace, shivering almost imperceptibly as his friend's purring laugh echoed through his flesh. The sound raised the hair on his arms, at the nape of his neck, raising gooseflesh on his pale skin as the vibration coursed through him. In answer he exhaled deeply, a sound akin to a heavy, contented sigh; their bodies shifted in response, hips to hips, chest to chest, his every sense heightened by this new, unplumbed depth. His tongue slipped beneath James', letting him lead, taking whatever he had to give. As time passed, as they grew closer, touched more, the tension of the moment seemed to bleed away. Though he did not feel the intensity of connection he experienced with Alex, or the pulse-quickening infatuation he felt upon seeing Philip, there was something here he could not quite explain; James was no stranger, after all, and the shared bond of their past made this less uncomfortable than perhaps it might have been otherwise. As he let his racing thoughts slowly but steadily quiet Adam felt his body respond: At first only small motions, slowly building to something more.

It was impossible not to keep himself from moaning slightly from the press of lips and the darting of tongue. He held him closely and his entire body felt warmer from the contact they shared.

James broke away from Adam and smiled softly. For once the hard edge on his face disappeared and he was more open, more emotional than he had ever been to anyone other than his family. He ran a hand down Adam's arm and slipped his fingers amongst his friends, entwining them and feeling Adam's warm hand against his own.

"There's a cave," James said bluntly, as if it was completely normal for him to know the geography of the land they were in. "It's warm and deep and usually the pine needles blow in to make a soft floor. Let's go to it." He gave a small, pleading tug of Adam's hand and his expression had an honesty in it that was unusual for James.

A flush crept over Adam's cheeks at the openness of the suggestion. Immediately he recognized it for the foolish response it was, this shrinking from words that only described what he himself had already put into action; quickly he tamped the response down, hoping James might mistake it for no more than the cold. Adam followed after him, listening to the sounds of their breath, to the crunching of snow beneath their feet. The cave was close, even Adam could feel that. He felt as if he knew that place, a comfortable, warm hollow in the midst of this frigid plane; they would be safe there, and undisturbed.

For a moment he wanted to ask how long this had gone on, for how many years now this desire had crept just beneath the surface, undisturbed and hidden. But he realized that such a question was meaningless, undeserving of the effort it would take to ask. Here, such things did not matter. As they reached the cave, silence hanging thick between them, he gave James' hand a brief, tight squeeze, a gesture of reassurance, of trust.

For once, James had completely removed all fronts he so easily put up. He was carefree, happy, and yet there was a desperation twinged with sadness that he couldn't shake. He brought Adam to the cave and turned to face him at the entrance. The wind didn't reach the cave which took away some of the chill in the air, still, the temperature didn't seem to bother James or Adam.

Gently, as if Adam could break or disappear, James brushed his fingers on his friends cheek. He bent forward, lips touching faintly before he pulled away and tugged at Adam's hand. "Let's go further into the cave." His voice was hushed, gentle, and a tone so few people ever heard. "I've waited," James whispered, all that he could get to pass his lips before he kissed Adam again and led him further in. Towards the back James knew, in some twist of dreamlike knowledge, that what he needed would be there. Somewhere to lay, somewhere to proceed with his desires, but he took it slowly so as not to forget this moment because in another weird twist of dreamlike knowledge James knew he would never get this opportunity in the real world. And for that, he cherished this moment as if it were gold.

In every touch Adam read the reverence with which James approached this, the vulnerability that humbled a friend he'd always known to be so proud and self assured. It made him all the more certain he had chosen the right path; there was nothing to regret here, no consequences to consider that might hold them back. When they stopped again his hand gripped James' tighter, his lean, lithe shape pressing closer, seeking ever more touch. He pressed a kiss to James' mouth, his tongue tracing that full lower swell, tasting again that faint hint of something uniquely, irrevocably him. His hands moved, fitting to James' hips, thumbs hooking at the heavy fabric there. A new curiosity took hold of him, guiding his motions, his thoughts turning toward the feel of a new body against his own, something entirely different, all hard lines and unyielding flesh, rough hands and demanding lips. He could not deny his interest, nor the clear and visceral response his traitorous body was increasingly making clear.

"No more waiting," he said, smiling soft against James' skin, slim fingers sliding farther beneath the line of his pants.

James grinned, a genuine smile that wasn't twinged with violence or cunning. He was openly happy as his hands drifted over Adam's body. "Yes," he replied with his voice deepened from lust. He brought him further into the cave, his eyes never leaving Adam and his body wanting to rush forward in this moment. But James calmed himself, tried to at least, and pressing his forehead against Adam's he continued to speak in a deep whisper before bringing Adam into the darkness.

"No, no more waiting. I've waited long enough."
