a little gauze will do wonders
Who: Toli and Audrey
What: apartment stumblings
Where: Pax Letale, main entrance; apt#403
When: 23 July, early evening.
Warnings: Foul language. LOTS of foul language.
level: complete

Fuck, her leg hurt. Toli had sprang out of bed Friday at five thirty in the morning, after only passing out two hours before, because she'd received a text that a criminal had pulled off his electronic monitoring bracelet and was loose in the state. Or Nevada. Or Mexico. And the bounty on his head was a decent price for her to make some money off commission. Thinking of the whiskey she'd be buying to celebrate, Toli had paced in front of her closet for twenty minutes before selecting a hiking outfit.

Better to pretend she was just a hiker in the mountains, right? She didn't know why she didn't go for tourist in Mexico - call it a hunch, but she was certain this man had gone east, not south. Seven grueling hours later, and she'd sussed enough information out of several of his contacts to know that he'd headed for a particular part of the mountains. Getting there was easy, getting him ... well, that was a lot harder. She'd camped out for the night, exceptionally glad that she kept a sleeping bag in her car. In the morning, she was off again, looking for a needle in a haystack. At this point she knew she'd have company soon enough, as the ones who went to Mexico first would come back and get the same information she'd had.

Luckily, she stumbled upon him first.

It took a while, and she wound up with several injuries, before she had him trussed up and in her car. Delivering him was bliss, but Toli was far too exhausted to go get some alcohol - she'd make due with what she had. At this point, her leg was no longer throbbing and was numb beyond belief. The way her shoe was stained with blood suggested he'd knifed her a lot harder than she previously assumed. The cut on her arm was okay, as was the other cut on her leg. Her cheek was blossoming blue, and she was fairly certain that her rib cage was bruised too.

Well worth it, though.

She got out of her car and slowly made her way to the entrance to Pax. Just a little further, just a little further, almost there. Once inside, she collapsed against the wall, looking over at the precious few steps to her apartment. She could do this. One little baby step at a time. Then, she was going to pour something over her leg [she didn't really have a first aid kit of any sort] and then a little gauze would be helpful. She made it two steps before hissing in pain, giving up, and sliding against the wall. A little rest, first, then she'd try again.

The elevator dinged and someone entered the lobby. "Don't even ask," Toli said as the woman looked over at her. "It's been a fucking long day."

Saturday. Audrey had survived her first week at her new job, and it wasn't exactly what she'd expected. The hours were great - no more night shifts, unless she was on call. But even though she knew working as an administrator would mean less medical practice, she hadn't anticipated how different it would be. She already missed it.

After tidying up the apartment, she stepped out to pick up her mail. Hopefully today she'd get a notice on how to set up cable - Alexis was asking when she'd be able to watch television again. With a sigh, she stepped off the elevator into the lobby - and let out a small gasp. "Oh my God!" she said quietly.

A woman, one of her neighbors, had just slumped against the wall. She'd clearly been injured somehow, and definitely needed medical attention. And Audrey's nurse intuition was telling her this was the kind of person who wasn't going to seek out help, even if she needed it.

"Okay, I won't ask what happened," she said. "But I think you need medical attention. Otherwise you'll probably make it worse." She reached out a hand. "I'm a nurse, my name's Audrey. I live upstairs. Come on, let me give you a hand."

Don't ask was usually when normal people did things like turn around and ignore her. Or at least toss a look over their shoulder and go, 'you sure?' They did not reach out hands and talk about being a fucking nurse.

"Mothergoddamn, of all the people I run into, I run into a goddamned nurse? Fuck off, alright? I got it."

Just ... when she could move again.

"All you fucking doctor types are the same, anyway. So go on, run along, ignore me."

Audrey bristled. Dealing with people like this was never pleasant. Get over yourself, lady, she thought. Pulling herself together, she let out a sigh.

"Look, do what you want, but that's going to get worse if you don't get some help. Especially that one on your leg. You want to end up with a nasty infection, suit yourself. But just so you know, if you let it go that far, it's going to hurt worse and you're going to be out of commission for awhile. You don't look like the type to want that."

She turned around and went to pull out her mail. The keys clinked in her hands, and the sound was deafening. Not off to a great start in her new home. She already wanted to go back to Arizona.

Out of commission sounded bad. Really bad. Still, she shrugged and talked at the woman's back.

"I was shot once, in the leg - huh, same leg - and ain't nothing bad ever happened to it. Oozed puss for about a -" she shifted and groaned. Okay, moving was definitely out of the picture for now. "'Bout a week, didn't stop me from gettin' what I gotta get. So, forgive me, but I'm just not too damn sure how this could be worse than that."

She hissed again and tipped her head back against the wall. Fuck.

Audrey raised an eyebrow. "Oozing pus is bad. Really bad. It means you've got an infection in the wound, and when a wound gets infected, you can get septic fast. You can loose that leg. You can die."

She took a few steps, back over to where the woman was sitting. "I get you. You don't want to have someone taking care of you. Well, I'm not going to do that. If you let me, I'm just going to help you out, because you know...some people actually still do care about other people." She offered the woman a half-smile. "Seriously. I'd feel horrible if you got sepsis, and you'd feel worse. Let me help you out. I don't care how it happened. I just want to help you stay safe."

Audrey briefly recalled that the woman said she'd been shot. I hope I'm not inviting a criminal into my place...

Toli wanted to roll her eyes because ... sepsis? Whatever. But the truth was, Toli wasn't sure she could crawl to her apartment on her own.

"You're damn stubborn," Toli said. "I kinda like that about you."

She sighed and looked at the elevator, then over to her apartment. "Well, I don't have anything in my apartment. It's 101, just right there. Except some gauze. I think I have some of that. Last time I used napkins and duct tape."

Audrey smiled. "Nurses are stubborn people." She reached out again. "Here, I'll help you."

She considered for a moment. "If you think you can take the elevator, we can go up to my place. It's still a little bit of a mess, but I have all of my supplies there. I can write you a script for some pain meds, too. You look like you could use some Percocet."

Pain meds were definitely better than winging this one out, and Toli reached for the woman's hand.

"Fucking Christ," she hissed, as she used her other hand to 'climb' up the wall until she was standing. "Fucking asshole had a knife taped to his forearm. Didn't realise it 'til I tried to cuff h - mother goddamn!"

Her shoe had left a bloody shoeprint on the floor and she looked down at it before letting out a low chuckle, "Idda smacked him around a whole lot harder if Idda known I'd wind up like this. Aubrey, you said it was? Toli."

Audrey kept quiet. This woman didn't seem the type to answer questions about whatever she did for a living. A cop, maybe? Security guard? I know who I'm calling if someone breaks in.

"Audrey, actually," she said as they stepped into the elevator. "My parents are big Hepburn fans. Toli's a cute name, is it short for something?"

"Anatolia," she said, slumping against the side of the elevator. "If this thing fucking breaks, I'm fucking killing someone. Anyway, my sister's Laide - Adelaide. My mum's a little bit more than a piece of work." She rubbed her arm and bit back another groan. "When you're the town harlot, I guess it don't really matter whatcha name your kids. So she named us after parts of the world. Jesusmaryjosephandthecamel, what floor are you on?"

"Four," she answered, as the elevator dinged. "This thing's kinda slow - I think it's old." She helped Toli hobble down the hall and opened the door. "My kid's not home, so make yourself at home." She kicked aside a stray box. "Sorry, moving's hell. Have a seat and I'll grab my stuff."

Toli didn't really need an invitation to sit down; she gladly collapsed on the sofa and let out a sigh of relief. "Fuck a duck," she murmured, looking around the place. "You just move in then? And a kid? Godddamn."

Talking kept her focus off her leg, which she still couldn't feel after it had gone numb getting out of the car. The shoe was ruined, but nothing to be done about that.

"Yeah," Audrey said, pulling out a box labeled, "MEDICINE CABINET". "My daughter's ten. She's already made friends and went over to somebody's house today to play soccer. It's a relief. I didn't know if she'd do okay with the move."

She pulled out some gauze and antiseptic. "Okay, this might sting a little. Hang in there, I need to get this cleaned up." She began gingerly washing the wound, hoping it didn't sting too badly. It couldn't be much worse than it already was.

Well, this Aubrey sure took charge and ran with it. Not that Toli minded, but - "Fuck!" that hurt. More than a little. More than a lot, actually.

"Why'd you move here?" Toli asked through gritted teeth, her eyes closed, and fists pushing into the sofa.

Now that she could feel her leg again, it was like fire in her veins and she wasn't that surprised to find that tears were leaking out of her eyes.

"I got a job out here," Audrey said, sponging off the dried blood. The cut looked pretty bad, but it wasn't so deep as to need stitches. The trick was going to be keeping it clean.

"A headhunter sent me a job offer, and I decided to take it. Better money, better hours, but I miss taking care of patients already," she sighed. "What about you? Are you from around here?"

Now that the initial surge of pain had worn off, Toli was pretty sure she could handle the rest of the cleaning of the wound. She relaxed a little bit, hoping that made it easier to treat and clean.

"From Montana," she said. "Laide graduated and mama kicked me outta the house. Figured here's as good as anywhere else. Got a job doing the only thing I'm good at - hunting. Pays well enough. Still go back and hunt up some meat e'ry year."

"So..." Audrey licked her suddenly dry lips, not sure how to phrase the question. "What, exactly, do you hunt?" She concentrated on wiping off the last of the blood. The bleeding seemed to have mostly stopped, but Toli must have already lost a fair amount.

Audrey tore open a small pouch of antibiotic ointment and gently swabbed it over the wound. "I'm just going to put some antibiotic on it and dress it, and you'll be good to go."

"Yeah, do watcha gotta do," Toli said, peering down to watch with some interest. Another ruined pair of jeans. She really did fly though them like nothing else.

She laughed at the question. "People, I hunt people," she said, very proudly. "And I'm damn good at it, too."

"Like...a PI?" Audrey asked. "Sorry, I don't know much about law enforcement or anything like that." She had an image of Toli chasing after cheating husbands and loan sharks. She pulled out a roll of gauze and started wrapping it around the wounded portion of Toli's leg. "I'll give you some gauze so you can change the dressing each day."

"Gauze I might actually have, now that I think about it," Toli muttered. "But yah, I'll take what you can give me. So, you here with a husband then too?"

She laughed again, "No, no, I'm a bounty hunter. I get beat up a lot, can handle m'self most days, but again, this asshole had a knife fucking taped to his arm. Who the fuck does that?"

Audrey's surprise registered on her face. She was definitely impressed; a female bounty hunter must be one tough lady. "Wow. I don't think I'd be able to handle that," she said quietly.

She perked up a bit and said cheerfully, "Nah, no husband. My boyfriend ran off when I got pregnant, but...we do just fine on our own, me and Alex." Audrey put the finishing touches on the wound dressing. ":et me get some stuff together for you, and get you that script."

Toli grinned at Aubrey's reaction, most people reacted that way. "I only look worse for the wear," she chuckled, "but so long as I get my payday, I figure I'm th'one coming out ahead."

The room was devoid of male artifacts, now that Toli looked closely. "Well," she said, as Aubrey wrote out the script. "Seems I owe 'ya a favor. Here's m'card. Anyone gives you any trouble, or nothin' or you're ina jam, that's my cell and it's always on."

She had a soft spot for women and kids who were alone - probably because they reminded her of her mama and Laide. Besides, kicking ass was a good way to repay a favor.

"I think I can make it back down on my own now that I'm all cleaned up, so thanks for that one."

"No problem. Here --" She handed Toli a small paper bag. "Some gauze and some more antibiotic ointment. Just change the dressing once or twice a day, depends on how much more it bleeds. And after you shower tonight, you probably want to put some ointment on the other cuts too." She handed her a small piece of paper - a prescription. "Percocet - one or two every four hours as needed. If you need more, just let me know."

She took Toli's card, grinning. "Thanks. You can probably tell I'm not really a tough chick. I gotta say, I'm pretty impressed you can kick ass like that." This was an all right woman, even if they'd gotten off on the wrong foot at first. "You should be able to get back to work soon. But...maybe keep a first aid kit in your car?" She smiled.

"Here - I wrote down my number for you too. If you ever get scraped up really bad, give me a call or a text. I'll stitch you up and you won't have to go to a hospital."

Stitched up for free and not having to go to the hospital? Hells to the yes. "I'll go back to work when an interesting call comes in," Toli said. "It isn't really a schedule or nuttin'. So cross your fingers no-one fun jumps bail on Monday." She glanced at the prescription and realised she'd had Audrey's name wrong the entire time. Well, good thing she'd never tried to use it again before now.

"Audrey, thanks. Really. And I grew up in Montana. As the town outcast. Learned real fast how to kick ass first, take questions later. You uh, ever want your daughter to be able to defend herself, I can give her some age-appropriate pointers."

The first aid kit had been in the car, once, a long time ago, until she'd used up all the bandaids. But that wasn't likely to get replenished. It was buried under some other stuff, besides. But she didn't need to tell Audrey that.

"Here's hoping the elevator doesn't break," she said, standing up and hobbling to the door. Definitely easier to walk now that it was patched up. "Thanks again."

The offer to teach her daughter was completely unexpected - and touching. "Yes - yes! Thank you so much - she would love that. I'm trying to teach her to be a strong woman, but...well, you know as well as I do it's a hard world for girls. I'd love to take you up on that." She smiled, an easy and inviting smile. Finally, she'd made a friend here.

"Call me anytime, really. I'm glad to help you keep assholes off the street." She stood in the doorway, watching Toli head off toward the elevator. "Good luck!"

"I like to use my gifts for good," Toli quipped, smiling.

She made her way to the elevator, back down to the lobby, and into her room; there, she collapsed on her bed, quickly over-taken by sleep. She'd fill the prescription tomorrow ... Right now, she just needed to pass the fuck out.

But hey. She'd made a friend in the process, so it was worth it.
