Two Boys for Every Girl
Who: Ron/Set ([info]sturmndrang), Rick/Osiris ([info]piece_o_dat) and Nina/Isis ([info]forget_me_knot).
What: Nina runs into Rick outside of Pax, and the sheer surprise knocks her off her feet. Literally. Rick takes the injured Nina to meet his brother, Ron, who also happens to be a doctor.
Where: Outside Pax Letale, then inside Ron's apartment at 1007.
When: January 10, 2011, 6:00pm
Warnings: None yet!

Nina trotted down the sidewalk at a brisk pace, clutching two reusable grocery bags to her chest. When she left for the store, she was certain she would have plenty of time before dark. Naturally, she lingered so long trying to decide between brands of ramen and whether or not she should allow herself a few sodas this week, that by the time she checked out, the sun was well seated upon the horizon.

She knew for a fact that the chances of anything happening to her were very small. Even if she were mugged, her attacker would have a debit card she'd immediately cancel and less than ten dollars in loose bills and change, as well as her groceries. Nina always carried pepper spray, but with her hands full, that'd hardly help. Really, it was the homeless people sleeping in doorways and clustered under bridges that upset her the most. Just like she knew her chances of being mugged were relatively low, she also knew that most homeless people were just normal people without homes. But they always had to talk to her and ask her odd questions. Nina cringed, remembering the guy who, though perfectly normal looking, asked her to take off her glasses and then told her she was beautiful. Of course, she had spluttered out a thank you, and then once she was out of sight, ran the rest of the way home.

At least the area near and around Pax Letale had a lot of street lights. She liked believing that she had a chance of seeing her potential murderer. Maybe the brisk January air would keep them at home. Nina found the cool weather downright balmy after years of Vermont winter. She snuggled needlessly into her hooded sweatshirt, forcing her mind off the track of how she might be murdered and trying to think of what she would make for dinner, or more importantly, for dessert. For weeks she'd been wanting to leave a bento for Rick, but suspected that it would be, first of all, creepy, second of all, not to his taste. So, with her clever skills of asking the other Aladdin cast members, she discovered his favorite kind of cookie was macaroon, and therefore was determined to make a batch of the most delicious macaroons ever to grace the face of the Earth.

And it was in this state of mind that Nina made her way home, looking but not seeing.

A short while later, Apartment 1007
[info]sturmndrang
2011-01-20 03:23 am UTC (link)
Even though it had been nearly a month since he'd moved into his new apartment in Pax Letale, and everything had been unpacked and organized and put away, Ron Nikesh was still having trouble finding things he swore he'd brought with him. This evening, it was a notepad with a list of contacts at UCLA Medical School and some thoughts he'd jotted down regarding the possibility of picking up a second specialty. He'd made the notes as an exercise in Thinking Ahead; he wanted to be ready when the patent on Viagra expired and the stampede began. And, if he wanted to be honest with himself, he was already tired of peering at other mens' dicks four days a week. While picking an unpopular specialty had been a viable theory for getting through medical school successfully, in practice it wasn't so hot.

He now sat on the floor in the middle of the bedroom he'd designated as his office, the contents of his file cabinet spread out around him, arranged by drawer and folder. "No," he sighed to himself, flipping through yet another steno notebook. "I could have sworn it was one of these..." Tossing it into a pile next to the pile he'd taken it from, he picked up a handful of loose-leaf paper and was about to plop it on top of the discard pile when he heard a sound from the living room. He stopped mid-plop, brow furrowed. What was that?

The banging sound happened again. It took him a minute to process what it was. Someone's at the door? Ron got to his feet and made his way through the living room toward the entryway. "Hang on, I'm coming," he called. "Unlike my patients..."

Opening the door, he blinked in surprise. "Rick?"

"Hey, Ron." Though Rick sounded casual enough, he looked stressed and a bit out of breath, and understandably so. He had three heavy cloth bags over one shoulder, and supported a rather timid looking girl by his other arm. Between all that, he didn't have the means to make it through the doorway. "Mind grabbing either the groceries, or her? We came up from the street just now."

Head tilted down, Nina tried to get a good look at this Ron without being crude, wondering who he was and how Rick knew him. She didn't recognize him, so he couldn't be another park employee. Her gaze darted to the side as she tried to come up with something dignified to say, and failed.

"Uhm," she pressed her lips together, suppressing a flow of anxious babble, "I, uhm, that is, Rick said you might be able to help me..."

Ron stared dumbfoundedly at the tableau filling his doorway before the girl's wobbly plea brought his attention to her. It was pretty evident from her slightly disheveled appearance that something had happened. But as his doctor's instincts kicked in, the ashen color to her face, her pretty features pinched in pain, told him that she had been injured somehow.

"Oh. Oh, of course." Quickly he moved in and replaced Rick's support with his own, shifting one of her arms over his shoulders while sliding a hand around her waist. Now her injury was apparent. "He's right, I'm a doctor," Ron reassured, using his best patient-soothing voice. "Let's move you to the couch and take a look at that ankle." He glanced back over his shoulder at Rick as he helped the girl hobble into the living room. "Do you know what happened, bro?"

Rick stayed a bit behind, closing the door behind him and lingering as he followed after. "She fell on a slick on the sidewalk. Her ankle went sideways." His gym bag went on one of Ron's tables, and he watched his brother ease Nina onto one of the couches. "We don't have to call 911, right?"

"Shouldn't have to. Worst case, I can take her to the ER. But that's only if it's broken, whiiiiiich..." Ron trailed off as he knelt next to the couch and got a better look of the girl's swollen ankle, "...I don't think it is. I'll know for sure after I examine her."

With that, he turned to his unexpected patient and gave her a warm, reassuring smile. She was a very pretty girl, her wide dark eyes giving her a sweetly innocent look; he wondered how she'd fallen in with the likes of Rick. "Don't worry. I'll take good care of you." He placed one of the small decorative pillows on his knee, then moved the injured foot onto it. "Let me know if any of this hurts," he told her as he gently and carefully began to slide her shoe off.

Nina nodded mutely, biting her lower lip as he slipped the canvas sneaker off her foot. The act was strangely intimate, reminding her of a hundred such scenes dripping with romantic tension. Then, the back of her mind suddenly came blazing alive with the concern that her feet might smell after being in shoes all day. They weren't even nice shoes, just ones she bought for comfort. Squinching her face against the pain, she watched him peel a teal striped sock off her foot with one, squinted eyes. Nina wondered if she should apologize prophylactically or wait until the doctor commented on it or made a face.

Belatedly, she remembered his instructions. "Uhm, it does hurt. A little. Not like, horribly. But you said if it hurts, uhm, to let you know, so..." her voice drifted off. A second thought came to her. Afraid to contradict any authority, or worse, appear stupid, Nina's voice was small, "I don't think I've broken it... Uhm. I didn't hear the bone break when I fell."

Ron nodded. "Good, good. That means you probably didn't break it." He was no osteopath, but he'd had advanced first aid, and that was really all that was needed for a twisted ankle. Just to be sure, he slowly manipulated her foot to see how well the joint moved; it was swollen, but not immobile, and there was no tell-tale crunch of crepitus. Whew.

Looking back up at Nina, he gave her a warm, happy smile. "I think it's just a mild sprain. We'll put some ice on it, then wrap it for you. Hey, Rick," he called, "there's an ice bag in the freezer. Could you get it for me, bro?"

It was this second repetition of the familial designation that sunk into Nina's consciousness. "Oh!" the words were out of her mouth before she could stop them, "You're brothers?" she asked with a little too much incredulity.

"The family resemblance is striking, isn't it?" Ron watched the girl's face, then grinned and shook his head with a soft chuckle. "Just kidding. Yes, I'm afraid we're brothers. Though sometimes I think he's my brother from another mother." He laughed again as he turned his attention back to her ankle. "Not likely -- our family's pretty traditional. He's the only one who strayed from the typical Indian career path. You know, doctor, accountant, computer geek..."

Ron glanced up at her briefly. He really liked this girl. "So, Nina, how do you know Rick?" he asked, hoping he didn't sound too interested.

"Uhm, I work at Disneyland too," she replied, wincing every now and then as Ron tested her ankle's flexibility. "Though not as anything like an actor, I just work in one of the shops." Just saying it aloud made her feel a bit depressed. Nina took refuge in changing the focus from herself back to Ron. "What about you? What, uhm, what kind of doctor are you?"

[[OOC: forget he called her by name up there... I thought I had fixed that! *facepalm*]]

Ron hesitated just a split second before replying. "...Men's health." That was technically what his field was, after all, and it sounded a lot better than urologist. "I work out of a practice in Newport Beach. Though I'm thinking of changing my specialty, y'know, going back to school for something different." He mentally facepalmed at himself. That sounds real reassuring, there, Arun.

"A little variety is good," he amended, "at least I think so. A wise man once said 'Specialization is for insects.' Silly analogy, but true." He placed her foot back on the couch and lightly patted it. "I'm going to go and get an ace bandage for you. No running off now, okay?" he grinned

[[OOC: It's cool. XD]]

Nina perked up a little at Ron's quote. Now that her foot wasn't dangling off her ankle as a dead weight, it pained her considerably less.

"Oh yeah, I was just going to leap up and do handsprings down the hallway the moment your back was turned," she replied with a small giggle.

That made Ron laugh out loud as he stood. "If my touch was all it took to heal your ankle, I wouldn't have to go back to school!"

He ducked into his office and came back out with a large leather medical bag. "Here we go," he smiled, setting the bag on the floor. "First aid kit from hell." He opened it and rummaged around until he found an ace bandage. Repositioning the girl's leg, he began to wrap the bandage around it. "Let me know if it feels too tight, um... Heh. I never did get your name."

"N-nina, Nina. Uhm, that is... just one Nina," embarrassment flared in her cheeks again, so to draw away from her faux pas, she quickly changed the subject, "I didn't know they made those kind of bags anymore. Usually you find first aid kits in plastic containers, right?"

"Yep, you're right. I have one of those, too, umm... somewhere," Ron grinned sheepishly. "Rick and our dad got together and bought me this bag when I graduated medical school. 'A doctor should have a proper doctor bag,' they said." He chuckled softly and shook his head as he wrapped Nina's ankle. "I use it as my earthquake kit, mostly."

Finishing, he affixed the little fasteners to the bandage. "There you go. How does that feel?" he smiled, patting her foot.

"Much better, thank you," she said, tucking some hair behind her ear and smiling shyly. She was surprised that he could pat so gently, without making her ankle hurt. "You've been really kind, is there anything I can do in return? I'm sure it's more than a little annoying to have to work on your day off."

Ron shook his head. "All part of being a doctor. That 24-7 thing goes into effect as soon as you get your license to practice medicine. But thank you for offering anyway." He glanced up into the kitchen. "Wonder what's taking Rick so long with that ice... Oh, I bet he put up your groceries so they wouldn't get ruined," he nodded. "Sorry your dinner plans got spoiled."

Nina waved her hands in front of her, like she was trying to ward off Ron's concerns. "Oh, no, no worries. I wasn't really planning on making dinner, really. Just ramen and tea," she said, then added, "And I have tomorrow off... I should be okay."

She was wondering about Rick too. Fortuitously, she hadn't bought many foods that needed refrigeration, but at this point she was starting to suspect that Rick was taking the opportunity so avoid her. Suppressing a sigh, Nina asked brightly, "I couldn't help but notice you quoted Robert A. Heinlein earlier; do you read a lot of scifi?"

"Uh, yeah!" Ron was a little surprised and equally impressed; not everyone would have caught that quote. He really liked this girl, more and more with every little new tidbit that was coming out. "Well, the classics mostly -- I've read just about everything Heinlein wrote, Asimov, Bradbury, Norton... Got into it while I was in college," he grinned. "Kind of a mental reset button after having my brain stuffed full of dry medical information all day."

He glanced into the kitchen again. "Where the heck is Rick?" he mused aloud, then smiled reassuringly at Nina. "Not like I'm trying to get rid of you! I just want to get that ankle iced." A flash of irritation crossed his face. "Hey bro, you find the ice pack okay?"

Rick had heard Ron mention him - not just this present time, but actually the first time as well, just before Nina asked about the sci-fi books, and a little prior that too. He heard them talking, which had the effect of taking his own anger down to a state of shame. His brother always acted like a gentleman, even now when treating a total stranger. Rick didn't want to think about how he acted to Nina in contrast.

He stood out of sight behind the wall dividing the kitchen from the living space, and with a small sigh, he opened and loudly shut the fridge door again.

"Hey, got it alright. The pack was just buried under some stuff in the freezer." Rick turned the corner and greeted both of them with a prize-winning smile, and strode over to where Nina sat. He passed her the ice pack, clearly hesitant to risk going near her ankle himself. "Here you go. What did my brother tell you? Are you going to survive?"

"You certainly wouldn't have done it any good," Ron nodded, "sprain or no sprain. I'm glad Rick brought you here." He guided the ice pack over the swollen part of Nina's ankle. "Now when you get back to your apartment, keep off your foot as much as you can, and keep it elevated and iced right where I've got it." Sitting back, he smiled warmly at her. "If the pain or swelling get worse, go get it x-rayed. Promise?"

"Oh," Ron interrupted. "But don't take the bus. We both have cars, if you need another ride." Rick crouched down next to Ron and clamped his hand down on Ron's shoulder and shook him with his sort of friendly frat-boy affection.

"In fact, here's a deal for you," Rick said to Nina. "My brother can be your brother too. When it comes to covering your back, he's the best."

He hoped she needed him.
