Two Boys for Every Girl
Who: Ron/Set ([info]sturmndrang), Rick/Osiris ([info]piece_o_dat) and Nina/Isis ([info]forget_me_knot).
What: Nina runs into Rick outside of Pax, and the sheer surprise knocks her off her feet. Literally. Rick takes the injured Nina to meet his brother, Ron, who also happens to be a doctor.
Where: Outside Pax Letale, then inside Ron's apartment at 1007.
When: January 10, 2011, 6:00pm
Warnings: None yet!

Nina trotted down the sidewalk at a brisk pace, clutching two reusable grocery bags to her chest. When she left for the store, she was certain she would have plenty of time before dark. Naturally, she lingered so long trying to decide between brands of ramen and whether or not she should allow herself a few sodas this week, that by the time she checked out, the sun was well seated upon the horizon.

She knew for a fact that the chances of anything happening to her were very small. Even if she were mugged, her attacker would have a debit card she'd immediately cancel and less than ten dollars in loose bills and change, as well as her groceries. Nina always carried pepper spray, but with her hands full, that'd hardly help. Really, it was the homeless people sleeping in doorways and clustered under bridges that upset her the most. Just like she knew her chances of being mugged were relatively low, she also knew that most homeless people were just normal people without homes. But they always had to talk to her and ask her odd questions. Nina cringed, remembering the guy who, though perfectly normal looking, asked her to take off her glasses and then told her she was beautiful. Of course, she had spluttered out a thank you, and then once she was out of sight, ran the rest of the way home.

At least the area near and around Pax Letale had a lot of street lights. She liked believing that she had a chance of seeing her potential murderer. Maybe the brisk January air would keep them at home. Nina found the cool weather downright balmy after years of Vermont winter. She snuggled needlessly into her hooded sweatshirt, forcing her mind off the track of how she might be murdered and trying to think of what she would make for dinner, or more importantly, for dessert. For weeks she'd been wanting to leave a bento for Rick, but suspected that it would be, first of all, creepy, second of all, not to his taste. So, with her clever skills of asking the other Aladdin cast members, she discovered his favorite kind of cookie was macaroon, and therefore was determined to make a batch of the most delicious macaroons ever to grace the face of the Earth.

And it was in this state of mind that Nina made her way home, looking but not seeing.

For better or worse, Rick was not so sensitive as to notice the change of inflection of her voice. And if she said she was okay, his mistake was to trust it instantly. He was busy looking up at the skyscraper-tall building just ahead of him, the Pax.

"Hey, what brings you around here anyway?" he asked. Rick extended a filled, if damaged, bag of groceries to Nina. "I thought you lived on the other side of the freeway?"

Her head popped up to look at him, less in surprise at the groceries and more at his question. Oddly enough, she made no move to stand up, instead taking the groceries from him while still sitting. "Uh, I moved out here... a few months ago," she replied, mulling over his words in order to find more antipathy among them. She forced a weak and unenthusiastic smile on her face, "Why are you out here?"

He brushed his hands over his jeans once the bag was returned to her. "I'm just coming back from the gym. I live up there," Rick said, pointing up at the complex.

He considered the grocery salvaging duty done. What was left was lost beyond saving - a peanut butter can had been run over in the street, and nobody would want gutter-flavored celery. So Rick hoisted his Nike bag over his shoulder and looked down at Nina. "I think that's all of the stuff. You should get up off the sidewalk, you know?"

"Y-yes...?" Nina's heart sank lower as she realized she had unwittingly moved into the same apartment complex. No wonder he was so eager to get rid of her; he probably thought she was stalking him.

Ashamed, Nina stared at the ground, knowing that the insult on top of the literal injury would be that she had no graceful fashion in which to upright herself. She took a deep, shuddering breath and then looked around for something to brace herself against, and in absence of anything as helpful as that, she carefully changed from a sitting to a kneeling position, unsuccessfully trying not to wince. Then, planting her good foot, she managed to stand up with only a little wobbling, her right foot remaining suspended above the concrete. Just the weight on her ankle sent new pangs up her leg. Still, she carefully, almost set said foot on the ground, close enough to give the appearance thereof, and then picked up her grocery bags.

Pleased with her success, she turned to her head to Rick but looked just past him, "Thank you very much, Rick. I owe you for this."

"That's alright." He tried to smile at her, but she still refused to look at him. Maybe she was just bummed about her lost food. So Rick lifted his hand in farewell. "Then, I'll see you around?"

After he turned around, and even after he started walking, he expected to hear her say something else to him. It stabbed at him, the feeling that she didn't care that he helped her, even though he knew she had said 'thank you'. But she gave him no other response, though he listened carefully for it. As soon as he was going to forget about it, Rick heard something else.

A squeak, then an involuntary cry, and finally the thumping of paper bags against the sidewalk. Rick turned on a dime, and looked back at Nina. Her foot was twisted away from her leg at a strange angle, and her body was doubled over with the pain of the injury. The grocery bags he gave to her landed on the sidewalk, though the contents didn't spill out this time.

The second time Rick turned to help her, and this time he looked much, much less Samaritan about it.

"Are you serious? After I tried to help you?" He hoisted the grocery bags over his shoulder with his gym bags. Rick hooked his other arm up under shoulder, like he was trying to lift her away from her ankle. "Come on."

This time around, Nina was completely compliant. With Rick's help, she was able to right herself and only felt a little guilty about leaning into him. In a way that was both comforting and frustrating, that he came back to help her made Nina feel a lot better. If he had been in a real hurry, and a complete jerk, he could have just ignored her.

"Sorry, I..." her voice trailed off as she resisted the truthful answer and found a gentler one instead, "I didn't think I had hurt myself that badly."

Oddly enough, her apology didn't appease him, and his mood wasn't lightened by her explanation. His lips were drawn in a tight line, and his dark eyes were fixed firmly ahead of them, towards the upper floors of Pax. "Sorry I can't seem to help you. I know a doctor who can."
