"I don't know if there'll be snow..."
Who: Open!
What: A Hallway Holiday Gathering!
Where: Naea's apartment's open!
When: December 18, 2010 @ around 7:00 p.m.
Warnings: Well. Anything can happen here. You know this.
Notes: There's drinks and food and music. It's hard to go wrong.

While "Marshmallow World" by Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin was playing on her laptop (Viva Pandora!), she was finishing up the Swedish meatballs (that she so rarely ate, but it was her mother's recipe and it was one of the very few meat items she did enjoy) and singing along with the song with a bounce in her step. For all that had fallen on her in the past year, Naea knew things could be so much worse and it was no reason to take away some of that holiday spirit. She wanted to celebrate all the good that had been and that would be. Since moving into Pax, she'd made great friends--more than she'd ever known. She would be getting her diploma in a matter of weeks, now. She felt so lucky. Fun and happy must be had.

Small cafe-style fold-type tables were set up along the hallway with some folding chairs peppered here and there as well as in her small apartment (She promised Neil, her boss, a pan of fudge for the lending). Lights were strung around some of the table legs and around her door and wherever she could get them up. Cold appetizers sat on those tables in the hall; hot ones were left in her kitchen to stay that way. Soda and spirits were available (her boss was generous, in addition to the lovely Kami). There were cookies and candy and Gypsy was tucked away safely in Pru's place.

Rare was the occasion that Naea would dress up. And tonight, with some help from Kami, she certainly did. She felt pretty and, well feminine. Not that she had never before any other time in her life, but tonight was different somehow. The lace-up back of her dress felt... sexy. Naea wasn't entirely sure what this shindig would bring tonight, but she knew that no matter what, she would be having fun.

"Knock, knock!" came the cheerful voice of her co-conspirator and Kami reappeared in the doorway with a big smile and her own changed look. After helping with the set-up and using every single skill she possessed in the cosmetic arts on her friend, she had excused herself and returned to her own sixth floor apartment. Now, less than thirty minutes later, she returned in a heightened state of adorability. Skipping through the door, she dropped her little white cardigan over the back of a chair and gave a little pirouette for Linnaea's benefit, displaying her rather retro black and white dress proudly. The skirt flared out slightly at the movement, accompanied by the smart clicks of her high heels as she turned. A stark counterpoint, they gleamed a festive cherry red patent leather.

Reaching up, Kami tucked a loose dark curl behind her ear, not bothering to attempt its return to her haphazard updo. "Do you need anything else?" she asked. "I have more cupcakes and things up at my place if you think we need them." She grinned. "Just remember that those lemon bars are for you and you alone, sweetie. No sharing!"

Pru made sure her apartment door was closed firmly - no need to let Gypsy make an escape and start a grand adventure similar to Homeward Bound, though the cat's home was only a few feet away. Dressed in the closest thing she had to that could be considered formal wear, she flipped her hair once more over her shoulder and turned back to the party decorations in the hallway. It really had come together well, and she was excited to hopefully meet more people who lived in the building. As long as she didn't end up naked outside the building in the wee hours of the morning like she had at the Halloween party (and she hadn't even had anything to drink!), she'd consider this a good time.

"OK, I think she's going to be fine...food, water, litter...hey Kami!" Her face creased in a grin, taking in the other woman's appearance. "I love your shoes!"

Naea applauded gently, Swedish meatball stirring utensil in hand at Kami's little turn on the catwalk that was her kitchen. "Very nice, Kami. As for those bars?" She grinned and thumbed over at the fridge. "I've already had two."

She shifted a little awkwardly in her t-strap shoes that matched her dress. The outfit ended up being a whopping $12.73 from a second-hand store up the street. The only thing Naea was concerned with was just how visible the tattoos on her back were. The angel wings, the Aum, an ankh, the hand of Fatima. Each one meant something to her, something of the soul, and each one she would get from here on out would be the same. The wings helped cover her scars from shards of glass, but those would forever pepper her back where no ink would reach. Someday, she would tell anyone who asked her story. Tonight, though, wasn't the time. Tonight, she just wanted to be pretty, to have fun, and wanted everyone else to have a good time as well.

Pru's entrance made her lift her head and she grinned. "I adore your dress, Pru. Thanks for taking Gypsy in for the night and for all your help." Blue eyes rested on Kami for a bit. "The both of you. I don't know why I felt the need to throw this together, but hey. Here we are." Linnaea smiled sweetly and turned her crockpot down on low. "Not sure who all is coming, but hey, if it's just us, that's okay, too."

"Then it'll just be a girls' night and calories don't count. Good thing, too, as it looks like we went a little nuts with the food." Kami gave Naea a saucy wink before skipping over to Pru's side. She promptly delivered a brief, affectionate hug and, as she drew back, her arm looped idly around the other woman's waist in a friendly gesture. "Doesn't Naea look so cute?" she asked, dark eyes twinkling with mischief. "Do you think I should warn her which guys she should steer clear of?"

"I hope I avoided the naughty list this year."

Adam smiled softly as he joined the milling mini-crowd. He felt no awkwardness or pang of discomfort to find himself the only man yet in attendance; being raised in a household largely dominated by females had left him long ago inured to such things. More, he recognized everyone present, and felt himself in excellent company. The corners of his black-limned eyes crinkled with sincere joy as he greeted his fellow partygoers.

"Where can I put these?" He lifted the coolers in his hands, the ice that nearly filled them rustling within. His black tuxedo coat and Cuban heels bore the wet shine of water already spilled in the process of lugging his promised burden - light, though annoyingly cumbersome - down the stairwell. Then, after a further glance around the room and all its Christmas party accouterments: "Naea, the place looks great."

She gently swatted Kami with something of a chuckle and a blush quickly making its presence known in her fair cheeks. "Oh, come on, Kami. I dressed up for one night. Don't I look cute any other day?" She meant it in jest, but her fancy-ish dress wearing was so few and far between.

"Where can I put these?" made Naea gander at the door to see the real first friend she'd made at Pax slugging in those coolers she'd so politely asked him to bring. "Hey, Adam! Actually, those can go along the wall just outside the door and to the right. I should have given you fair warning. Do you need a hand?"

In the hall, at a table near the coolers - Kami, Jay
[info]sugar_cycle
2011-01-11 06:10 am UTC (link)
While things had remained relatively small and quiet, Kami really had no complaints about the state of Naea's party. Quiet meant more chances to talk and small meant maximum mingling efficiency. On top of it all, she had not seen her friend smile so much since forever. Naea practically radiated Christmas spirit and joy and, for her part, that was more than enough for Kami. So long as Naea kept smiling like that, it could have been the most poorly attended party ever.

Luckily, though, it wasn't really and she had just taken a moment to retrieve a wine cooler from one of the ice baths in the hall, settling herself in a shaky little chair beside a tiny little table against the wall. Absently, Kami smoothed her full skirt down over her crossed legs. Then she sat up straight for a moment to wriggle out of her little white cardigan. She draped it over the back of her chair with only the slightest hesitation and settled back once more, fanning herself with one hand as the other traced a line in the quickly forming condensation on the side of her bottle. The smile that appeared on her pretty, heart-shaped face radiated contentment and relaxation. This was good.

"Now this is how a party should be, you know?" a woman's voice said, somehow echoing Kami's very sentiment. Unlike Kami, she was from butch fashion stock, in a trim white shirt and black slacks, and what had to be Urkel's best set of red suspenders. She fished in the ice bath for only a moment, pretty quickly deciding on a Sam Adams.

The woman was looking at Kami and gave a reserved smile, while her hands sharply cracked open the cap to her beer. "At our age, these things should be small and relaxing. And you look pretty blissed out there."

A giggle answered the assessment and Kami shared an even brighter smile with the stranger. "And this is my first drink, too," she replied cheerfully. "Welcome to the perfect little party."

Then she seemed to realize the rudeness in her continuing to sit and quickly stood in a series of graceful, unfolding movements. An automatic twitch of her hips settled the full a-line skirt into a suitable state again, crinoline beneath keeping it full. Then she offered one small hand in greeting. "I'm Kami from up in six-oh-seven," she offered. "You must be kind of new here. Which means I pretty much owe you cookies." At Jay's lifted eyebrow to the comment, Kami laughed again. "It's become tradition somehow. Especially this time of year. I make more cookies than my figure can take."

The other woman put out her hand and offered a rather powerful handshake. "Name's Jay. I'll take cookies but that doesn't mean I believe you, not with you showing off your figure the way you are."

Satisfied by the handshake, Jay took a step back and drank off the top of her beer. Now, Jay had had a moment of intense focus when Kami first introduced herself by name, but it seemed as if that moment had passed. "I've been here for a few months, and then my job took me to Mexico for a little while. When did you shack up here?"

Clearly pleased by the compliment and not at all put off by the searching stare, Kami grinned as she reached back to retrieve her own bottle. She lifted it in teasing salute to acknowledge the other woman's approval of her curves. Then she took a deep sip before answering the question. "I moved in, oh, about the end of September. I love it."

She tilted her head suddenly, though, and considered Jay with a new light in her dark eyes. "So you haven't been around for the," she paused to search for the right word, "special times, huh?" She grinned; the special was all too obviously a euphemism but now Kami seemed inclined to look back with amusement. "You missed one heck of a party."

"If it's the Halloween party, I got a Tweet about it," Jay said coolly. "But I can't say I got all of the special details." To say the least. Her dearest informant must to have left out some of the finer points of that story.

Jay smirked, then bumped her hip against the table, leaning into it somewhat. "Maybe you can fill me in a bit about it, and the kind of trouble people must've been starting?" Jay's full attention remained on the other woman, body language open and with her eyes, she entreated Kami for a good story. "It's hard being left out of the loop like I've been."

In the hall, near the cookie table - Pru and Open
[info]banrion

Prudence was always terrible at social events, instead always lingering on the fringes and keeping to herself even though she'd promised some deity that she'd finally get around to mingling. There was nothing wrong with Naea's party, it was actually nice that it was small and quiet. Pru was just horrible at approaching people. So she stalled around the cookie table, nibbling on a piece of gingerbread and eyed the decorations, taking down notes for her own potential ideas in her work. Candy canes could make potential weapons, that was for sure...

Cara had sworn that she would not spill alcohol or gumbo on her dress this evening, and, so far, she was pleased that she had stuck to that promise. Dressed in a festive red satin gown whose open back seemed to counter any warmth provided by the long sleeves and closed front, she had been carefully skirting the food all night...

...But a cookie would not ruin the dress, even if she did manage to spill it all over the place.

"Excuse me," she murmured unnecessarily to the dark-haired woman milling about the table, her eyes on the decor. There was plenty of room to maneuver around her, but Cara rather preferred letting people know she was sneaking up behind them.

"The decorations are pretty, aren't they?"

In the hall...but just barely

...he'd completely forgotten about the party.

The festivities were hard enough to miss, considering that Shae could hear music wafting down the stairwell as soon as he'd set foot in the building. It had taken him by surprise- at least for the 4.3 seconds it took to recall that, oh yeah, Kami had mentioned something about picking up alcohol for a Christmas shindig. Apparently that was tonight.

Shae made his way up to the second floor landing, pausing as he rounded the stairs and the hallway came into view. There were lights and food and decorations and...wow, really nicely dressed people. He looked down at his own nondescript attire and wondered if it could really be considered "party-worthy". Not that he generally gave a damn about that sort of thing, but this wasn't his party.

In fact, wasn't that Linnaea's apartment? He'd helped the poor girl move her precious few belongings down to this unit, although he hadn't seen much of her since then. Not that he'd seen much of anyone, really. Between all the contracts he'd been working, he barely even had time to sleep, let alone socialize. As it was, he was internally debating whether he had the energy to mix it up with his fellow Pax party-goers.

After she's gotten done helping Adam--they happen to be at that end of the hall!

She'd just turned about from grabbing one of those Smirnoff things from the cooler and was pleasantly surprised to see a Shae standing there, though he looked a bit lost. He'd been one of her saviors when she had to move, and the didn't really get the chance to see much of him between her crazy hours and his. "Hey, you!" she said, offering a welcoming smile that was every bit Naea. "Welcome to our rockin' house party. The strippers will be by later.

"Come on in!" She was probably being overly enthusiastic, but you know, holiday spirit moved her sometimes. "Did you want a beer?"

Shae may have been a little reluctant about the party itself, but there was no resisting that smile that spread across Linnaea's lips. Her enthusiasm was so engrossing that he nearly missed what she'd said, and he laughed a little belatedly.

"Dat' soun's lahk mah kin'a pahty, ma cher," he said with a grin, mustering up the energy to saunter over and initiate a one-armed hug of greeting before pulling back to give her an obvious once-over.

"Dress a good coloh on you," he murmured, briefly examining the intricate angel wing tattoos curving over her back and shoulderblades- or at least, what he could see of them. "Nevah knew you had ink. Suits you, 'dough. Now...you say somet'ing 'bout beeah?"

She returned the half-hug with a squeeze of her own, a kiss on his cheek and smiled. Again. There was something about seeing people around her happy that just made her happy, and that accounted for a lot. Naea sincerely hoped that he wasn't worried about dressing up for the shindig, and she blushed all the same at his brief admiration. "Hey, thanks. I don't often put myself in a dress, but I just sort of felt like being pretty tonight. As for the ink? I have quite a bit of it. Each piece has a story, maybe better suited for another time and more alcohol, though." She finished that last bit with a wink because, well, there was far more hidden under that pretty dress than she could have revealed publicly.

"Beer? In these few coolers. I think there's Sam Adams and Labatts. It's kind of a mix and match in there, so help yourself. Various food if you want that, too."

"Pretteh, Miss Linnaea? Den I' say it wohked." He reached up to lightly tap at the curve of her cheekbone, a knowing smile spreading over his lips at the faint flush of pink there. "Dat's a good coloh on you, too."

Her remark about the tattoos left him with curiously arched brows- well now, that almost sounded like an invitation, didn't it? "Same heah," he chuckled as he lifted the lid to one of the coolers and retrieved some brand of longneck; he was really beyond caring about names at this point. "Mebbe we should trade stohries sometahm."

Shae returned her cheeky little wink, leaning in to knock their bottles together with a light clink. "À votre santé." He took a long, refreshing swig from the bottle, eyes falling closed from sheer contentment. Mon Dieu, he'd really needed that. "I fohgot dis was tonight," he admitted a little sheepishly, catching the thin trail of alcohol spilling down his chin with the back of his hand. "Been a long day."

Did she blush? Oh yes, she did the moment Shae's fingers touched her cheek. It wasn't often she got compliments like this, and Shae was pretty damn good looking in his own right. She was starting to feel as though she could just eat him up. "You show me yours, I'll show you mine. I think it would be a fantastic adventure for the both of us." Oh, man. It wasn't often that Naea flirted or really wanted to, but Shae seemed to bring it out of her. And she liked it.

Clinky went their bottles. "Sláinte." She'd had a group of Irish folks come in about six times during their stay not long ago, and they'd taught her the word. Repeatedly. "And you know, don't worry about forgetting. You work long hours. The last thing you were thinking about was a party. Nevertheless," she purred (She could purr?) before sipping out of her clear glass bottle. "I'm glad to see you here."

Ren walked into the hall a little bewildered. He hadn't been on his computer in a while and hadn't seemed to hear of the party until just now. Christmas was a big time for the theme park and he was getting even more work than normal. At least he was getting extra hours so that meant he was getting paid more. That would good right? He was so ready for a different job.

He had slipped on buttery soft leather jacket over his t-shirt and had come down to see if he would even know anybody. He had recognized Shae immediately but the bounty hunter had his back to him and he was talking to a girl who seemed to be in the party spirit. He walked into the decorated apartment. He recognized Pru and also saw Kami inside and smiled and nodded at both of them as he found a beer and popped the cap off by wrapping his shirt around the top and twisting.

He took a drink and looked around at the decorations and listened to the music as he wandered around.

Before long, he came face to face with Kami again and she greeted him with a glorious smile, face bright and slightly flushed from alcohol consumption and the warmth surrounding them. "Why, hello, there!" Reaching out, her hand glanced against his forearm in an easy, gentle way. "It's good to see you again, Ren. Naea was starting to get worried that not enough people would show up."

Her hand moved to touch fingers against the bottle in his hand and she smirked. "I see you found the important stuff," she teased. "Do you want anything to eat? Something to wash down?"

Ren smiled a Kami. He was kind of used to being a little ignored, though it was his own fault he hadn't come earlier in the party with everyone else. Kami was always a pleasant surprise. It wasn't even her party, but there was a bit of a natural hostess in the woman standing near him. He tipped the bottle back into his mouth for another gulp before he spoke.

"Hi. I, uh, heard there would be free food and beer. That always seems to be the best way to get my out of my apartment." Ren didn't want to say that he was kind of a lurker at the forum lately. Not very often did he post or speak up on there, but he did pretty much read everything that was open to the public to read.

"Ah, sure. What do you suggest?" Kami seemed to know a lot about food and excited about making sure everyone got to taste a bit of everything.

“I don’t know. It depends on what you like.” Taking his words as permission, or at least as a signal of ambivalence, Kami slipped her arm through his with another smile warm as sunshine. There was a cheekiness there, too, as if she could not quite help but tease the shy young man now in her clutches. There was nothing mean-spirited in her, though, and she guided him gently but firmly towards the kitchen. It took some weaving; Linnaea had been determined to provide for every possible contingency as well as making things as merry as possible and this had resulted in closer quarters than normal in the cozy apartment. “Do you have a sweet tooth?” she asked. “Have you eaten anything yet? There’s snacks and desserts and more regular food.”

Kami laughed, self-deprecating, and released Ren as they reached the kitchen. Complete disconnect only lasted so long, however, as she next reached out a hand to touch his shoulder warmly. “Let’s get you a plate,” she suggested. "We'll put whatever you want on it... With the condition that you have to try at least one of my desserts."

Ren just grinned a little at her. She must have worried that he was a picky eater. It couldn't be further from the truth. Ren had always made a point to try everything at least once. He maybe hopeless in the kitchen, but he did appreciate a good meal. And of course he had a really good metabolism so he had never really cared about moderation too much or portion size really.

"Heh, I'll try a little bit of everything. How does that sound?" He turned from her and grabbed a plate and started piling things onto his plate as started to eat what looked like a finger sandwich of sorts. "So what did you make?"
