Gumbodacious
Who: Shae/Raven (in_the_wings) and Nina/Isis (forget_me_knot)
What: Nina is very obliging and does her best to keep her word.
Where: #907
When: November 16th, early evening.
Warnings: An astonishing lack of common sense on Nina's part.

It'd taken Nina a solid twenty minutes to psyche herself up. She didn't want to meet anyone who always carried a gun, that sounded scary. On the other hand, if she refused his invitation, she didn't want to be on his bad side either. So after consulting the internet and whomever was on AIM, she decided that Shae always carried a gun because he was from someplace like Wyoming, or Montana, where everyone has a gun. Maybe even Texas. That would explain why he used the library computers too! They probably weren't as common out there.

She stood in front of the door, tupperware held in both hands like an offering, carefully going through a few yoga breathing exercises. After she came to terms with the idea that running away now would be so cowardly that she would hate herself for weeks to come, she quietly knocked on the door.

Shae silently cursed his luck as he rounded the banister at the seventh floor landing. Of course he'd get a call from his bondsman with a contract large enough he couldn't rightly refuse just after making a date for dinner. And then get pulled over on La Palma for speeding, although he was able to charm his way into a warning rather than an actual ticket.

And then the elevator would fucking break, wouldn't it? What the hell? Whose drink had he spit in to earn that kind of karma?

Needless to say, he was a little winded by the time he'd reached the ninth floor. He leaned forward and braced his hands on his knees as he tried to regain his breath, and as he glanced down the hall he caught sight of an unfamiliar woman knocking at his door. Frustration (or something very much like it) was evident on her face, and he wondered just how long she'd been standing there.

"Hey," he called out breathlessly, fingers disappearing beneath his jacket as he tried to massage the aching stitch that had formed in his left side. Oh, come on, he wasn't exactly out of shape. "Nina, raght?"

At the sound of her name, Nina turned and saw a stranger with a hand tucked in his jacket, right towards where someone might carry a shoulder holster. Mind still preoccupied with the worry of upsetting men with guns, she dropped the tupperware and backed up to the door.

"Uhm, uhm, I'm sorry!" she blurted, eyes wide, "I didn't mean to be that much of a bother! Please, please don't be mad!"

What the hell?

That...wasn't quite the reaction he'd been expecting. Shae paused for a moment, dumbstruck at the woman's terrified reaction. Sure, the past sixty minutes had been a little rough on him, but did he really look that bad? Poor thing looked like she was ready to piss her pants.

"Woah, woah." He held up his hands in a pacifying gesture, revealing that both of them were, in fact, empty. "Cahm down, ma cher. I ain' mad...jes' gotta catch mah breath. Goddamn elevatuh's broke."

"O-oh," she stuttered, blinking rapidly as she reassessed the situation, and immediately felt like a complete fool. "I'm so sorry, uhm, I just thought..." Nina groped for a reasonable explanation for her reaction and found none; so she opted for Door #2, a ridiculous, made-up and vague explanation. "I just thought you were, uhm, this guy I heard of, you know? Friend of a friend sort of story, but you're obviously not a robot." She offered a weak smile and sort of frantic smile, wondering why the hell she said what she just said. In an effort to cover her faux pas, she rushed on, "S-sorry. You're... Shae, right?"

Shae straightened up as he approached the cowering brunette, wincing a little at the final few thrums of pain in his side. "'Dat be me," he returned with as disarming a smile as he could manage, suppressing the urge to laugh at her ridiculously transparent excuse. She may have been a shrinking violet type, but somehow she wore it well.

"What's 'dat 'bout a robot?" He stooped to retrieve her Tupperware, holding it out to her for a few moments and then snatching it just out of reach with a playful grin. "Can' know fo' sho' less you check. Go 'head, I' wait. Won' even scream...too loud." He tucked the container under his arm and waited to see how his new neighbor would respond to that.

Nina cringed again. Her 'hope he doesn't notice tactic' didn't work. "Uhm, I can tell because, uhm..." she floundered, "You speak with a Creole dialect, right? That's full of irregular grammatical structures, so it would be nearly impossible to program well into a robot. It would be easier to just use regular American English. And uhm, it's really hard to simulate human skin, and now that I get a good look at you, you're definitely human."

The smile that stretched across Shae's lips widened as his new companion proceeded to dig herself ever deeper into the hole she'd created. He assumed humor would be her response, or maybe just a casual brush-off; he'd been teasing her, for Chrissake! She was giving this actual thought, wasn't she?

Mon Dieu, he was going to have fun with this.

"Take as good a look as you lahk, Miss Nina," he said with a wink, smoothly retrieving his apartment key from his pocket. "I don' blush easy." Ah, but apparently she did- and wasn't that a pretty color on her? Shae surprised himself by reaching toward her and playfully tapping her under the chin, then withdrawing to slip his key into the lock.

...only the door didn't want to open. Oh, COME ON.

His devious smile instantly disappeared as he jiggled the handle, then withdrew the key and tried again. The locking mechanism was working, he could feel it turn and hear it click. What the hell was wrong? He huffed in frustration and, in a small burst of violence, pummeled the door with his forearm. Apart from a loud THWUMP at the contact, the wood refused to give.

Well. So much for being smooth.

Like a blessing from above, the recalcitrant door gave Nina time to compose herself. She brushed her hair out of her face, noting how hot her skin felt. As Shae struck the door again in frustration, she couldn't help but giggle quietly.

"See, you couldn't possibly be a robot. Robots never have trouble with doors," she said from behind her hand.

Shae arched an eyebrow at her response, trying to calm his growing frustration. Sheer force obviously wasn't going to get that door open, so maybe a little ingenuity would.

He passed the Tupperware back to her as he fished around in his back pocket with no luck, fingers then moving up and around to the front of his sleek utility belt to dig at a small compartment from which he drew a credit card. He waved the card at her and grinned.

"See if 'dis wohks." Then he was crouching in front of the stubborn lock, trying to wedge the sliver of plastic into the tiny space and trip some sort of mechanism that had obviously been unengaged. When several minutes of wriggling (accompanied by some very ungentlemanly cursing) still yielded no result, he sighed and tucked the card back into place.

"Sorry 'bout dis, ma cher," he said with more than a little irritation. "Gotta kit in mah car dat oughta do da trick. Hol' on jes' a minute."

Shae almost tripped over his own feet at her suggestion. Not that assumed she was incapable of finding a solution; he'd known quite a few mechanically-inclined broads in his day, his grandmother and sister being prime examples. But...he had just given that lock a pretty thorough jostling, so what could she possibly find that he'd overlooked?

"...go 'head," he returned evenly, folding his arms over his chest and leaning against the wall to watch. There was a clear note of skepticism in his voice that said more than any words could have. Let's just see you try.

Nina's cheeks darkened a little, but surprisingly she didn't back down. Instead, she put her ear to the lock and turned the key a couple times, listening to the mechanism. Then she fished a metal knitting needle out of her pocket and leaned into the door as she fiddled around with the latch. A long moment later, the mechanism clicked in surrender and the door swung open.

Well, color him impressed...and maybe a little sheepish. Okay, a LOT sheepish.

The astonished look on Shae's face was so pronounced, it was almost comical. He stared at the lock for a few moments, then at Nina, then back at the lock again. What just happened here?

"...erm." He cleared his throat and tried again. "What da fuck you got in yo' pocket?"

"Double-pointed knitting needle," she replied timidly, though a pleased smile kept sneaking back onto her face. She twirled the needle once before pocketing the item. "They're kinda handy for a lot of things. Uhm," she glanced inside his apartment briefly, "do you have any powdered graphite? I could make sure the lock doesn't get stuck again."

"Mmm-mm." Shae shook his head in the negative and reached out to run his fingers over the faceplate. "Got gun oil, 'dough. Lahk dat bettuh dan graphite. I's nice an' t'ick, an' it don' git so gummy."

Oh, he recognized that self-satisfied smile stretching across her lips, alright; it was a vast improvement from the terrified and slightly uneasy expression she'd been sporting since he first came huffing up the stairs. Still...the opportunity was too good to pass up. He settled a hand on her upper back, smiling wolfishly as he gestured for her to enter the dwelling.

"Trus' me, ma cher, I know mah lubrican'. Now git in dere an' git you some gumbo. You jes' eahned yo'self dinnuh."

"Uhm, but, you really shouldn't use oils for lubricating locks," murmured Nina as she obligingly stumbled inside Shae's apartment; his touch on her back oddly startling. "Even gun oil, they get gummed up with dust and stuff. You don't clean your lock after every use, which I hope you do with your guns, and which is why powdered graphite's better." Nina knew she sounded pedantic, but the thought of using gun oil on any part of a door simply alarmed her.

Shae dismissed her concern with a wave of his hand, flipping on the lights so that it seemed a little less like he was dragging her into the abyss. "I been doin' it fo' yeahs, ma cher. I's actu'lly pretteh t'in, but still t'icker dan WD-40, so it stays raght wheah it needs to...an' it don' stink ta high heavun." He left the door open behind them, mostly for her reassurance.

His spiel continued as he made his way into the kitchen, withdrawing the container of leftover gumbo, shoving it into the microwave to reheat, then dishing it into bowls over semi-warmed rice. "Dat graphite is ol' school. Not dat it evah bot'er' me...I lahk ol' school."

He was back in the living room almost before Nina could blink, kicking off his boots and sinking down onto a couch cushion as he held a bowl up to her in offering.

As Shae prepared the meal, Nina did her best impression of a house plant, trying to stand in a corner where she didn't get in the way, all the while wondering if Shae hadn't understood the intentions behind the tupperware container. Although, he was clearly from the South and one thing her mother succeeded at is pounding the idea (though not the practice) of Southern Hospitality into her head.

Watching Shae settle himself in, Nina gingerly took the proffered bowl and looked around for a table, or possibly a chair. Finding none, she perched on the edge of the couch and sniffed the gumbo, not suspiciously, just curiously. (It seemed that Nina practiced cautiousness and hesitance in most everything.) Taking a wary bite, Nina chewed thoughtfully and then swallowed.

"This is really good!" she said, trying not to sound too surprised. "Did you make this?"

"Couhse I made dis," Shae answered with a chuckle, spearing a shrimp with his fork. "Yo' face ain' gone all red yet, so you mus' be a guhl dat can han'le heat." He seemed strangely pleased by this knowledge.

"Oh, fuck, ahlmos' fuhgot. Wan' a beeuh o' somet'ing?" Without waiting for a reply, he plucked the Tupperware off the couch and sauntered back into the kitchen, depositing the container on the counter beside the leftovers to be filled at some later point; after all, what fun would it be to eat alone?

He returned a few moments later bearing the promised longnecks, perfectly chilled and ready to be imbibed, and he plunked them down on the coffee table. "So...Nina," he began in a mildly conversational tone, shrugging off his jacket and tossing it over the back of the couch. Unfortunately for his new dinner guest, that particular action left his (very loaded) shoulder holster clearly on display. He went to work unfastening the closure at his shoulder, completely unaffected by the whole scenario.

"...Disneylan'? Realleh?" The note of skepticism in his voice was clear. "Don' strahk me as da Mickeh Mouse type."

Nina wrenched her gaze away from Shae's shoulder holster, though it took her a moment to process what he had said, as the query struggled its way through a flurry of anxieties. To buy time, she twisted off the cap of her beer (being too polite to refuse) and sipped the drink.

"Oh, uhm, kinda, I guess?" she laughed nervously, placing the cap back on the bottle and twisting it around, making a quiet ringing noise, "I was hoping for a job in maintenance; like the animatronics? I know, it's kind of lame. I guess I wanted a job that would use my degree."

Shae finally managed to wrestle the holster off his shoulders and deposited it on the table in front of them, all the while listening to his dinner guest's anxious response. Damn, did this girl ever relax?

"Ain' not'ing lame 'bout it. Got da degree fo' a reason, didn' you?" He smiled in what he hoped amounted to a very friendly and reassuring grin, then briefly leaned toward her to knock their respective beer bottles together in toast.

"Promise I ain' gon' bite you, ma cher," he said with a wink, folding his legs beneath him on the couch.

Nina pressed her lips together as she suppressed a smile, though the expression spoke volumes about her confidence in his assurance. Instead of answering, she dug into her bowl of gumbo. A few bites in, she chanced upon a pocket of cumin. Nina choked down the rest of the food before reaching for her beer, chugging down two-thirds before relenting, realizing that the liquid did little to ease matters.

Turning to Shae, she wheezed, "I forgot that alcohol doesn't help with spicy food."

Just as Shae was beginning to think he'd finally won her over and the rest of the evening would be smooth sailing...well, then her face started turning strange colors. He watched her gobble up the remainder of her bowl at a suspiciously rapid pace, confusion clear on his face until she spoke.

"Uhhh," came the oh-so-graceful response as he watched her choke through her discomfort. He knew that culinary heat was a problem for some palates, but it had never bothered him, so the concern never lingered. "Hol' on."

In a matter of moments he was back from the kitchen, packet of crackers outstretched toward her in offering. He was trying....so hard not to laugh, and it showed.

"Th-thanks," Nina opened the package and nibbled on one, trying not to get crumbs everywhere, while she added the other to the gumbo. After a long moment, she started to giggle, covering her mouth in order not to snort out crumbs. A few more gulps of beer solved the latter problem but not the former.

"I must look like--" she sniggered, almost saying 'damn fool,' Shae's accent was rubbing off on her, "like a complete fool."

Mon Dieu, he was so relieved to hear the sound of that giggle. At least now he could laugh out loud without feeling like a total jackass.

"Ain' seen anybody put up dat much'a faght wit' da gumbo in a long tahm, ma cher," he managed as he threw back the longneck for another drink. "But I' t'ink you jes' won."

He paused with the bottle raised halfway to his lips, then gestured to it with his free hand as he glanced over at her and batted his eyelashes in a show of horribly phony innocence. "Mebbe I oughta jes' spill da beeuh all ovah me- den we BOT' look lahk damn fools." Oooh, she'd definitely read that accent right.

"You better not!" she chastised with another small laugh, "Beer is so hard to get out of upholstery, you know."
