Field trip!
Who: Samuel & anyone who went to Tyler's game.
What: Neighborly bonding time over another Chargers loss.
Where: A restaurant! With FOOD and BEER.
When: Sunday evening.
Warnings: TBD.
Notes: Anyone who went to the game is welcome, whether you commented to this post or not.

The game had gone badly, but the company had not. The girls had for the most part kept their hands off Samuel's stereo on the long drive, and at the stadium had left his beer alone as well after only minimal fuss. It had been interesting to see who had accepted Tyler's offer of discount tickets, if only in the interest of escaping their strange building for a leisurely Sunday afternoon out; some faces were yet unfamiliar to Samuel, and he was cautiously curious to meet them all. To this end he had wormed his way through their conveniently grouped seats, inviting each of them to dinner following the game.

He and his carpool companions sat now at the restaurant in question, idly sipping drinks and nibbling a few appetizers. It seemed hit or miss as to whether their neighbors would show, but Samuel was content to kill time precisely as he was: With his feet up in an empty chair and a beer in his hand, he was well prepared to wait them out.

Brighid's first American football game had been quite an experience. Though Tyler's team, therefore Brighid's team, had lost, she'd had a reasonably good time trying to learn the rules of the game from Samuel, with varied input from their other neighbors. It had been a lot to take in, however, in a somewhat rowdy atmosphere, and she was much happier sitting now in the relative quiet of the restaurant and not among legions of screaming and cheering (and jeering) fans.

After taking a sip of water, she put her glass down and said the one thing that had been on her mind all afternoon: "I still don't understand why you call this football. Only one player ever kicks the ball."

Well, the game had been fun, although that three-point loss was pretty disappointing for the Chargers. Stupid penalty. Naea glanced over at Brighid's question and grinned lightly. "I used to wonder about that, myself. When American football was being developed, it was originally based off of football. Rugby was as well, but I think it was called Gaelic football once upon a time."

She sipped on her Coke before resting her hands on the table. As time went on, Naea began feeling like her face was a tad sunburned, and rather than poke at her cheeks to fidget with it, she decided to be polite. "The rules started changing; picking up and running with the ball, catching the ball and all that. Soccer was called Association football, which was shortened to 'A-sock'--spelled A-s-s-o-c. Hence why Americans now refer to it as 'soccer'." Naea made a face, blushing lightly (despite her mild sunburn). Well, she hadn't meant to sound like a know-it-all-smartypants, but she felt like she had. She looked down at her tabled hands. "It's, erm, rather interesting what you find in encyclopedias and Google."

As she walked into the restaurant with Adam, Alexandria tried to keep the frown from her brow. In the first half, she hadn't spent a minute in her seat, it felt like - her fists clenched, clapping and cheering, then muttering darkly whenever the Patriots got a first down. The second half of the game was much darker, and by the end of it - and for most of the ride to the restaurant - she might have been even more broodingly silent than usual, had Adam not kept drawing her out of it so deftly, half the time almost without her noticing.

"I don't care, I'd still love to see Tom Brady eat every yard of those stolen first downs. Boston." She spoke the word with complete disgust, muttering to Adam as he spotted their neighbors and led her over. Taking a deep breath and forcing herself to at least pretend not to be fantasizing the New England quarterback's painful demise, she looked around the table and gave everyone a nod, adding a small wave to Samuel, whom she recognized from paintball.

For all his years having known Tyler - and in spite of having attended a few games for the sake of providing friendly support - Adam knew almost nothing about the sport. Of Alexandria's entire quasi-tirade, only the threats of bodily harm made any real sense to him. Thankfully Alexandria had never been one to torture him with unasked for explanations of a game in which he had no real interest. This part, however, he found decidedly amusing, and he felt a small pang of remorse when their arrival before the assembled party put an end to it.

He took a seat alongside her at the table, casting a cautious smile toward the housemates already seated. "Are we really this early?"

	Brighid made a speculative humming sound over Naea's explanation while she watched the newcomers seat themselves. Adam she recognized from the night at the club, and she smiled warmly across the table at him. "Sure I don't think Sergeant Wolfe specified a time, but we can say you're late if you like!" "It may end up being just us," Samuel said, nodding a sort of greeting to Alexandria. "Nobody else really gave me a straight answer, but I don't think that'll keep us from a little neighborly meeting." He flagged down a passing waitress, encouraging her to pause long enough to let the newcomers order at least their drinks. The rest could wait until they had a better idea of the final guest list for their impromptu dinner party. Once introductions were made, he grinned over to Alex; though her dark muttering had been beyond his hearing, the general cast of her expression certainly needed no interpretation.

"Loss or not, it was still more interesting than Association football," he said, grinning pointedly at Brighid. "The most interesting thing about the World Cup was the damn octopus."

Ah. That third (or fifth) wheel feeling was settling in. Funny how that seemed to work when there wasn't something else to pay attention to--like the game. She smiled at the folks still coming in, chuckled briefly at Samuel's comment and politely sipped on her lime water. Maybe the game was fun, but the dinner she could have passed on.

Mentally, Naea began running through her list of 'to do' when she got home. Psych homework, do the dishes, probably start some laundry. Oh yeah, need new shoes for work since the current ones are giving a peepshow of my socks... It wasn't intentional and no one's fault, but it often happened when Naea felt out of the loop.

	Brighid's only reply to Samuel's taunt was a wrinkle of her nose and an unamused glare, then she turned her attention to Naea. "What made you look that up, then? Are you a fan of real football or just interested? I've a bit of a bug for history myself. I was always in trouble at school for spending too much time in the library, if you can believe it." Naea glanced up at Brighid's brogue and found a smile. "A little of Column A, a little of Column B. Mostly I was fascinated by rugby and the lack of any sort of padding and wondered how it all connected. It's hard for me to want to watch sports on TV, mainly because it just seems like I don't get as much out of it as I likely would at a game. And that means all forms of football."
