Who: Ren and Shae
What: an unusual meeting
Where: a bar away from the crazy building
When: Oct. 2, around 8 PM
Warnings: Alcohol makes fools of us all.
Notes: Beware the hero-worship and awkward moments!



Ren needed to get some air. The weirdness at the building was getting a little too much for him to handle. It had initially been shocking, and then he started having a good time running down the floors, checking out what was different on each of them. He had been a little disappointed with his floor, but the weapons had been cool. It was nothing compared to the forest on Chris's floor though.

He left the apartment building around seven. Maybe if he cleared his head then...then what? Would it make the illusions go away? Were they even illusions? Chris had seen them. Mirza had seen intestines in a jar and holed himself up in his rooms. He had checked the forum, and it seemed like others were seeing the same exact things too. What the hell was going on? He hadn't been able to find any cameras or anything to prove it was some really elaborate prank worthy of some big budget TV show or anything, and he was running out of ideas.

He wandered by a bar that was playing music he could hear from the outside, and looked inside. It looked like every other bar he had ever been to or seen.Good, something normal. He shrugged a bit, figuring that alcohol couldn't make him see anything more strange than what had happened back at his apartment building. He opened the door and walked in. The music was louder and the air was heavy with smoke. Wasn't there a law or something that said you couldn't smoke in bars now? Maybe the ventilation was broken.

Looking around without actually paying attention to anything, he walked up to the bar and asked the bartender what their specialty was and ordered it. He slid into the bar stool and waited for his drink, and blinked a few times with a confused expression on his face when the male bartender winked at him.

Fifty-three hours. That's how long he'd been directly tracking the skip this time: fifty-three hours, thirty-seven minutes and about twenty-six seconds, give or take. He'd already spent the last two nights sleeping in his car, trying to stake out the locations where his quarry had recently been spotted. Apparently the man felt confident enough to come out of hiding, and now it was time for Shae to make his move.

As he sat at the bar, contemplating his next move should his current plan fail, Shae began to wonder if maybe, just maybe, he was losing his touch. He'd always been the resourceful type, but his tactics as of late just seemed plain ineffective. It was going on a month- a month!- since the contract had been issued, and his bank account was starting to look awfully slim. If this tip-off from one of his contacts didn't pan out, well...

It was still early yet. The bar was nearly full; hardly unusual for a Saturday night, and he'd already had a handful of somewhat enticing offers from a few of the other patrons that he'd had to turn down. Shae didn't really frequent the gay bar scene, but occasionally it was a nice perk. Especially on nights like tonight, when his adrenaline was high and there was a remarkably attractive man sitting beside him.

Eh, he could multi-task.

He waited until the bartender had served the man his drink, then smoothly intercepted the glass before he could reach for it. "Let's play a game," he drawled, an easy smile on his face as he nodded toward one of the unoccupied billiard tables.

"Hey!" Ren looked over at the stranger who had stolen his drink. What was that about? Ren worked hard at the theme park and He had delved into his pockets to pay for that drink, and he wasn't about to pay for another one because of this man. Why the hell did everyone push him around so quickly after meeting him? Did he have a sign on his back that read "Sucker" for everyone else to see?

"That's my drink." He hadn't taken his eye off of it even as the other man's hand had snatched it away. He looked up finally and saw the man who had taken possession of his beverage and blinked a few times. Who was this man and what had provoked him to start messing with random people at the bar? Ren narrowed his eyes in thought.

"A game? I don't want to play a game. I want my drink back." He looked over at the table the man seemed to be motioning to. Pool? Shit, he wasn't very good at that. Sure he had great dexterity from playing video games, but this was pretty different and more difficult, or so Ren thought was the reason for why he sucked at billiards. Video games were supposed be good for the hand-eye coordination. Maybe his was just too far gone to get any benefit.

He sighed and lifted his glasses and rubbed his eye, not realizing how juvenile it would make him look. "If I agree to play, will you give it back?"

Shae watched the younger man grumble in consternation, the smile on his face growing all the while. Not quite the enthusiasm he'd been hoping for, but at least he'd gotten a reaction. This could be interesting.

"If you agree to play, I'll t'ink about it," he said with a chuckle. Okay, so maybe this kid was a little younger than he'd thought. He was also apparently oblivious to Shae's flirtations, but that was alright; it was more of a challenge this way.

Shae smoothly plucked a pool cue from the mounted wall case and tossed it to his new opponent, followed by a chalk cube. Still holding the man's captive drink in one hand, he set about racking up the balls and preparing the table for play. "You break," he said with a grin, in a tone that left no room for argument.

Maybe the sign said, "Pick on me, I'm an easy target." Ren was easy to tease, especially because he let people get away with it. He really didn't know how to make it stop short of just walking away, but that pink looking drink was his, dammit. He had considered just saying quit it or going and telling someone, but both choices seemed childish and whiny wouldn't get him the results he was looking for.

"Fine." He followed the other man over to the green covered table and caught the pool cue that was tossed his way. Ren looked at him with narrowed annoyed looking eyes, he hoped that was what they looked like anyways, and wondered where that accent was from. From the south somewhere he guessed. Ren had never been to Louisiana let alone New Orleans. The closest he got to Mardi Gras was back at home when they used to have a dinky little parade with local organizations creating something that was supposed to pass as a float. They always gave the oldest ladies or the youngest kids the cheap plastic beads to toss too. Needless to say, there was no flashing involved.

He stood at one end of the table and looked down at the other end were the balls were lined up in a triangle. "I'll warn you now," Ren set the white ball on the green carpeted surface with little ceremony and then leaned over, his body parallel with the table top, holding the base of his cue with one hand and supporting the tip with the crook of his thumb, "I really suck at this game."

He popped the cue forward with his back hand and sent the white ball crashing into the colored ones with a moderately strong strike. The balls on the outside of the triangle scattered across the table a bit, but the heart of the shape pretty much remained where it was, unbroken.

"'Dat's really da best you can do?" Well, he didn't have terrible form, but his pool-shooting skills definitely left something to be desired. Shae dismissed the idea that his new companion might be some sort of hustler; he seemed far too transparent for that. In fact, there was nothing playful in his demeanor so far...he just seemed annoyed.

Again, Shae could work with that.

"How 'bout I strike a deal wit' you, Cap," he offered, retrieving his own cue and setting the drink on the lip of the pool table beside him, practically daring the other man to make a grab for it. He brushed the chalky blue cube against the tip of the cue, running on autopilot for a few moments as he looked past his current conquest to scan the rest of the bar. Sure, he welcomed a pleasant diversion as much as the next guy, but he was technically here on business.

"I' trade you yo' drink fo' yo' name." With one easy, fluid motion, Shae leaned down and took his shot, making a clean break that sent two of the solids scurrying into separate corner pockets. "Low balls." He took his next shot and missed intentionally, not bothering to call anything since he assumed it was probably beyond his opponent's abilities.

"Don' come here often, do you?" It wasn't actually a question.

"I said I wasn't very good. Didn't you believe me?" Ren would never be able to hustle someone out of money, and certainly not at playing billiards. He might have a chance with one of his game consoles, but only on certain games.

Ren watched the stranger as he made his offer to give Ren back what had to be one of the girlie looking drinks he had ever seen. Ren was a little embarrassed by it. Maybe if he drank it quickly he could just get a beer or something less condemning. What the hell was it anyways? It was pinkish and looked like something was floating in it. He didn't know much about cocktails.

He watched as the two solid colored balls rolled into their respective pockets and sighed a little. This guy was probably a lot better than he let on, and was still pretty sure of it even when suddenly the stranger missed his next shot. Ren walked around the table and stood in front of the white ball and looked for a striped ball to aim for.

"It's Ren. Ren Raikou." He hit the ball, and wonder of wonders if it didn't actually make it into a pocket.

Ren smiled and stood back up, feeling a little pleased with himself. Maybe he wasn't as bad at this as he thought he would be. He walked over to the other man and took his drink with purpose and triumph, taking a deep gulp of it. Oh yeah, it was girlie. It tasted fruity, and was that an orange peel in there? At least there was vodka in it.

"Definitely a beer next time. Huh? What? Oh, no. I haven't even lived in this neighborhood for very long. Just thought I would stop in for a drink." He looked at the empty glass and shook his head. He shouldn't have gotten something without knowing what it was.

Shae's ears perked up noticeably at the other man's introduction. Ren Raikou. Ren Raikou. Ren. Why did that name sound so familiar? He racked his brain for a possible answer, but nothing really struck him.

That is, until Ren admitted to having only recently moved to the neighborhood- then the proverbial light bulb came on. Shae smiled at the recollection of a certain forum thread and the casual challenge he'd set forth within it. Could this really be the mystery neighbor from 404? What were the odds, with a name like that?

Shae watched his newly named opponent down the unappealingly pink concoction, chuckling at the expression on his face as he finished it off. "Make yo' shot. I' be back." He propped his cue stick against the wall and headed up to the bar, absently drumming his fingers on the countertop as he waited for the bartender to finish with his previous customer. He was so preoccupied with his recent discovery that he didn't even recognize the blonde-haired fugitive that had just claimed the barstool beside him- until he caught a glimpse of the man's reflection in the mirror behind the bar.

The drumming stopped. Calmly, he leaned forward and gave his order to the bartender, who passed a pair of bottled beers over the bar to him. Then he turned, caught the blonde man's attention long enough to offer a smile and a wink, and made his way back to the billiard table.

"Here, wash da taste of 'dat shit outta yo' mout'," he said, offering one of the bottles out to Ren and picking up the conversation right where he'd left off. "I'm Ezra. Haven' been here 'dat long myself, but it don' take much to see you ain' gotta damn clue where you are." He arched an eyebrow at his young companion and took a swig of his beer, waiting for the inevitable reaction.

Ren's mouth twitched slightly and he sighed as he watched the other man leave him to figure out his next shot. He didn't need anyone to tell him that that last one was pure luck. He wasn't even sure how he could develop skills enough to actually play this game well. He walked around to where the white ball was now located and tried to find a clear shot for him to take. He squatted down to become eye-level with the table to see if he could make a clear line with something so that it ended in one of the pockets.

"I think this is hopeless." He muttered as he put his hand on the end of the table to help raise himself back up so that he was standing. He scratched his head, shrugged and picked up his pool cue and took another shot. The ball bounced off the other side of the table and ricocheted into a couple of other balls, a striped and a solid, but did little damage.

He looked up at the other man as he came back with the bottles of beer. "Thanks, Ezra," Ren took the offered bottle and stared at it as he introduced himself. He held the bottle up to his mouth and downed some of the beer, getting rid of the taste of fruit and vodka.

"Does it matter? It's not like I wandered onto private property or anything. It's just a bar. Your turn." He motioned with his bottle and used the cue like a cane to lean on. It was a weird bar though. He had a bartender wink at him, and then someone stole his drink. But he was in California, and this place seemed to move to it's own beat. Maybe it wasn't that weird here.

Finally, the target was in his sight.

Shae's eyes had been trained on the man at the bar, so he was only paying half attention as Ren spoke. He watched as the bartender did just as he'd requested: waited until he'd left the bar counter, then delivered a Heineken to the blonde in question, who glanced around questioningly for his mysterious benefactor.

He was really deviating from protocol tonight, and the worst part was that he didn't particularly care. The only equipment he was packing was a pair of cuffs and the revolver that had taken up regular residence on his left side shoulder holster; his badge and ID were shoved a little haphazardly into his back pocket, hardly on display.

Oh, right, and he was drinking a fucking beer and doing his damnedest to get himself laid- only the object of his attentions was so ridiculously dense that Shae wasn't sure the kid would even KNOW if he were gay. Goddamn, but he was hot...what a shame.

Either way, though, this whole situation reeked of unprofessionalism. And now the fugitive was in a crowded public establishment, with at least a dozen dangerous and potentially lethal outcomes. And...well, he still didn't care all that much.

Shae retrieved his cue a little robotically and moved in for a shot, twisting the stick in his hand and putting an impressive spin on the cue ball that sank three successive solids as it ricocheted off the side. "You ain' got da sense you were born wit'," he said, addressing Ren with a direct stare and a quirk of his eyebrow.

"'Dis is a gay bar, baby." He watched from the corner of his eye as the blonde man approached him, beer in hand and obvious interest on his face. "'Jes' be glad I foun' you first."

Ren stood there a half a second, maybe it was really five minutes, and stared at the other man, Ezra. His eyes widened, stormy gray-blue registering shock, disbelief, and realization. He took a glance around the room with new eyes and with actual perception of where he was. All in the establishment were primary men. How had he not noticed before?

"Oh hell..."

Ren dropped his pool cue and nearly dropped his beer bottle. He held onto it only because of quick reflexes that obviously subconsciously put the beer in more favor than the bar's property. His face was flushed with embarrassment and he found he couldn't look the other man in the eye now. All he could think about was not letting Chris find out about this. He'd never live it down.

He took a deep breath and painted on a smile, looking up with his eyes closed. He would play laughing it off. Who knew, maybe if he did it well enough, he might even believe it himself.

"Wow, I feel pretty stupid. I guess stress keeps me from even noticing simple things now." Who was he kidding? Not smooth in the least bit. He might never come back out of his room again. "Maybe I need new glasses."

He bent down and picked the pool cue back up and looked over at the blond man approaching them, or more accurately he was approaching Ezra. They weren't going to start flirting right in front of him, would they? Or even worse, would they eventually kiss? Why was he imagining them sucking face while shirtless!?

Ren felt like bashing his head into the wall.

He really, really had to resist the urge to laugh out loud. This kid was so clueless, it was almost- strike that, it was FUCKING hilarious, and maybe even endearing, in a way. He was practically an open book, and Shae found the whole notion refreshing; he might just have to keep this Ren character around, if only for chuckles...and eye candy. Definitely as eye candy.

"Not sho' dey make lenses dat t'ick," he returned with a smirk, leaning over the edge of the table to line up his next shot and jutting his hip out at just the right angle to give his approaching target a nice rear view. "Don' worry 'bout me, 'dough. I'm jes' here on business."

The man behind him was so close, Shae could almost feel the hairs on the back of his neck standing at attention. He sank another solid before looking over his shoulder at the blonde hovering there, drink in hand; then a devilish smile spread across his lips as he added, "I' been waitin' fo' you all night, Podna."

Ren took off his glasses for a second and looked at them with one eye closed. He set his beer down and cleaned the lenses. They always seemed to collect smudges when he wasn't looking. It also provided a good distraction from Ezra and his own thoughts. How longs was he going to be made fun of exactly? Although he deserved it for not paying attention to where he was going.

"Go ahead. Laugh at me. Get it out of your system." He put his glasses back on and picked up his beer again. He took a drink and then looked at the bottle. He liked beer. It wasn't sweet like that other drink. Nope, it had barley and hops!

"Business? What kind?" He set the bottle down and looked over at man on the other side of the pool table. What kind of business would he be doing at a gay bar? Oh wait, Ren didn't really want an answer to that, he thought.

"Podna?" He was speaking to himself and mimicking the other man's accent as Ezra had obviously moved on to his next target for the night. "Steals my drink and calls me cap."

Shae brushed aside his companion's commentary, focusing his full attention on the very receptive target that had sidled up next to him. And was now leaning against the edge of the pool table beside him. And was now settling a very friendly hand on his shoulder.

What a goddamn shame.

"Hope you lahk 'dat beer," he said, lips curving into a perfectly seductive, masculine smile. Might be da last one you get fo' while. The other man had already made an equally flirtatious comeback, and Shae responded in kind, attentive enough on a superficial level to keep the man talking while still mentally adjusting his strategy. No visible weapons, that was a plus. Build was a little bulkier than his own, but he could probably subdue him with relatively effort.

It paid to be cautious, though. If you had the time.

Shae shifted his position against the table, leaning closer to his target and providing easy access to his backside. "Grab 'dat fo' me, Podna. T'ink 'dere's somet'in' inside you might wanna see." The smile on his face never wavered as the blonde man, surprised at the invitation, obediently retrieved the wallet in question, hand lingering appreciatively inside the pocket that contoured tightly against Shae's ass.

Ren couldn't believe what he was seeing. He just stared, unable to take his slightly inebriated eyes off of the scene playing out before him. Was Shae actually offering his ass to the stranger? He really hoped that he was just talking about the wallet inside his back pocket. But then why would he let a stranger take his wallet out of his pants? It was starting to make Ren's head hurt to think about it.

Right, then he would just stop looking. Any minute now. He'd just turn his head away. Fuck! He had lost the ability to move his head, damn alcohol and your effects on nothing being able to control simple body mechanics. If he kept making excuses in his head, perhaps he could fool himself into believing them.

He clutched the pool cue and leaned on it like it was a cane, and pretty mused used it as one. It would keep him from swaying back and forth as he continued to drink from his beer bottle. He was a little more aware of his surroundings now that he knew he was in a gay bar. His eyes darted from one peripheral sight to the other, noticing some people watching him, and he wondered had they been watching him the whole time or had they just started noticing him. He really didn't want to think too long on that.

"Hey, podna," He mimicked Shae's accent, "Are we playing a game here or what?" Was he feeling a little jealous? Another dangerous thought best not to dwell on. He should have been more concerned about how easy it was to put away thoughts he wasn't ready to deal with and to not think.

Damnit, was that kid still talking? Shae's expression remained coyly interested even as he stretched an arm out behind him and snapped his fingers sharply, pointing at Ren as if in reprimand. He was trying to enjoy the fondling before dragging his molester back to jail, thankyouverymuch.

While the blonde man was busy flipping open the wallet to investigate, Shae smoothly withdrew the handcuffs from the compartment on the back of his belt, hidden from view beneath his jacket, and casually snapped one side around the wrist of his unsuspecting target. "Good ta know ya, Elliott Pahmer. Ezra Dufraisne, bon' enfohcement. You' undah arrest."

The man's eyes widened in shock at the new development, and he flung the wallet aside to land on the surface of the billiard table, where it fell open to reveal Shae's ID card and badge. With a harshly muttered curse he lashed out at his captor, and Shae was barely quick enough to avoid a fist to the nose; he ducked out of range of Elliott's flailing arm and used the man's momentum against him, taking full advantage of his momentary imbalance to shove him onto the table and jerk his cuffed hand behind his back.

After nearly a month on the lam, however, Elliott wasn't about to go down without a fight. In a desperate attempt to free himself, he grabbed at Shae's discarded pool cue and stabbed it backward, blunt end first. Shae wasn't entirely prepared for the move, and as he blocked the attack with the outside of his wrist, Elliott caught him in the ribs with a vicious jab from his captured elbow.

Ren raised an eyebrow at the snapping fingers at him as if to get him to shut up. He pouted little bit and glanced away. Apparently there game was being put on hold so that he could get groped by the other man. It bothered him, oh yes it did. Why did it bother him, he couldn't say. Ren had liked the little bit of attention he had gotten from Ezra. He rubbed the back of his neck and sighed a bit. He felt hot. Probably too much alcohol.

He started to walk around the pool table, his lower lip sticking out in a visible pout and kept his attention focused else where. The butt of his pool cue dragged behind him as he slide the bottom of his beer bottle around the table along the wooden surface.

When he finally looked back at the other two men because he assumed that they might be done man handling each other, everything seemed to happen so quickly. Ezra announced that he was a bond enforcement officer or whatever and the man was looking at the badge. Then suddenly they were fighting.

Ren blinked a few times, looked around, and then back at the scene in front of him. What the hell!? Weren't they getting all touchy-feely just a second ago? How did this happen? Shae doubled over a little from the blow to his ribs and Ren picked up his beer bottle, finished it quickly and rushed over and hit the man on the head with it.

It wasn't like the movies at all. There was no satisfying shatter from the glass bottle. Just a thud of glass against bone as the man sagged onto the pool table, knocked out. Ren looked at the bottle in his hand as if it was some sort of hideous growth. He had never been a bar brawl before. When had he lost complete control of his actions? Damn alcohol. It wasn't like he even got hurt, but that didn't stop the wave of nausea the swept over him.

Ren looked up at Shae with eyes full of admiration, "Y-you're a bounty hunter?"

Shae had recovered just in time to catch the tail-end of the scuffle, and his eyes widened as the blonde skip collapsed face-first onto the billiard table. Part of him was impressed at his young companion's initiative, but the other part, well...

"Da fuck you t'inking, comin' at 'im wit' a goddamn bottle? Dat' a lawsuit jes' waitin' ta happun!" he barked, completely ignoring the younger man's question. He muttered a few choice words under his breath and pressed a hand over his aching ribs, gingerly testing the area; after a brief examination, he determined that nothing was broken and moved to the unconscious man. By this point they'd gained the attention of every other patron in the bar, including the bartender who looked to have a phone in his hand with a finger on speed dial.

Time for a little damage control.

Shae sighed and cuffed both of Parmer's limp wrists together, gesturing at Ren to keep an eye on the man as he snagged his wallet from the table. "Watch him. When I git back, you' gon' help me put dat deadweight in mah car. You broke it, you' gon' fix it." With that said, he spun on his heel and hurried over to the bartender, offering up his badge and ID as he tried to explain the situation and reassure the man that police involvement was unnecessary. Fuck all if he'd give up the bounty on a month's worth of work.

After several minutes of intense discussion, Shae returned to his very confused and vaguely distraught-looking new partner in crime prevention. Alright, so...maybe he'd been a little rough on the kid. "Hey Ren, loop yo ahm t'rough his an' grab 'im undah da ahmpits," he ordered, though his tone was far less harsh than it had been.

Ren just watched Ezra, barely able to piece together what the other man was telling him. Ren had a boyish grin as he nodded. He had a vague idea that Ezra might be upset with him. But what did that matter? He had met and helped a bounty hunter with his catch. A real life Boba Fett! Nothing could overshadow this moment. Not even walking into a gay bar by mistake.

And then he looked down at the unconscious body in front of him and he winced. Suddenly he remembered what he had done. He had joined a bar fight for chrissakes! And he effectively ended it too. He dropped the bottle as if it were hot and watched it roll along the floor under the billiards table.

He glanced back up as Ezra returned toward him. His vision seemed to swim a bit and at first he could barely understand the other man. He knew Ezra was some sort of southern dialect, not that he could pinpoint it. "Huh, what?" It took him a minute though to fully grasp what he had said, and consequently to start doing it.

He wrapped his arm around the unconscious man's back, holding him under the armpit like Ezra told him to, and shut his eyes tight as he used all his strength to lift the man up. He had to squat slightly and lift with his legs because he had superior strength there as opposed to his upper body. His jeans felt tight as he lifted the man off the green carpeted table.

He looked up at Ezra and smiled genuinely. His inspiration was set in a drunken sort of overdrive as stories revolving around a character like this guy seemed to run through his head like a flooding delta. "Happy to be of service, but I really hope your car isn't parked a mile away."

"Y-you're Boba Fett!" He continued to grin stupidly.
