You'll rescue me right? In the exact same way they never did
Who: Nish and Jen [NPC]
What: Nish finds a kindred spirit at her new art class.
Where: Local Art Studio
When: Wednesday, May 10, 2017
Sunday Nish had woken up with the idea in her head to get actual art classes. It had just popped in there out of nowhere, and after wandering into her office to look at the paintings, she made the decision. She enjoyed painting, but she needed direction, focus, instruction.
The paintings she’d already made didn’t mean much to her anymore. She remembered doing them, but the emotions, the memories, that they had once invoked in her were completely absent. Looking at them now, they might as well have been painted by somebody else. Part of her entertained the idea that they had been.
So after stashing her finished works in the closet, she sat at her computer with a mug of tea and spent the morning googling ‘local art classes’, eventually finding a studio that was accepting new students. It was group class with instruction by an actual artist. She signed up immediately, and the next class was today.
After work she drove to the studio with excitement and not a little bit of fear. It was all new to her, and painting in front of others was a huge step. Once she arrived she was greeted warmly by the instructor and shown to a free spot with an easel already set up, next to a very attractive woman who smiled widely at Nish as she sat down. She turned to Nish and offered her hand.
“Hi, I’m Jen,” she said, flipping her long, glossy blonde hair behind her ear. Nish smiled back and took her hand.
“Nish,” she replied, “this is my first class; I’m a little nervous, to be honest.” She glanced around the room, watching the other students pulling out projects from previous classes, getting their paints in order. Jen grinned.
“Don’t worry about it. Everyone’s going at their own pace here, and Brittany, the teacher, is really nice.” she said, indicating to the woman heading towards the front of the room. Nish looked at the other woman’s easel, a half-finished painting of a serene forest scene making her wistful for something she couldn’t name.
“That’s really beautiful,” she said, leaning over to study it more. Jen grinned and waved her off.
“It’s okay, I guess,” she said modestly, and a slight blush crept attractively across her cheeks. Nish smiled to herself and then looked up as the instructor caught the attention of the room and began the class.
“So you live around here?” Nish asked after the instruction had finished and they were free to work and chat. Nish had settled on a landscape too, falling back on a favourite Bob Ross painting she had in mind. Broad strokes of her brush laid down the sky, and once the foundation was done she moved on to the grass.
“Yeah, not far from Newport,” Jen replied, working on a flower in the middle of her forest scene, adding a focal point to draw the eye. Nish’s smile widened.
“I live in a building on Newport Beach,” she said, “Pax Latale…”
“Ohh, I’ve heard about that place, it looks pretty nice. Though I’ve also heard weird things about it.”
“You have no idea,” Nish smirked, changing brushes and starting to make a few clouds in her sky. There was a long pause while they both worked on their canvases, and then Jen glanced over at her out of the corner of her eye.
“We should talk about it. Maybe over coffee?” Nish grinned but didn’t take her eyes off her canvas.
“You want to talk about my building?” she asked her in an amused voice. Jen laughed.
“Alright, I want to talk to you,” she said with a poorly concealed grin. She finished the tree she was working on and then turned to catch Nish’s eyes. “Would you like to go out for coffee with me?” she said, more of a statement than a question. Nish bit her cheek to prevent an even wider smile from breaking out across her lips, and then turned towards her and nodded.
“I’d like that….are you busy after class? We could get some dinner.”
Jen nodded and shrugged noncommittally, “I could eat,” she said, though the smile never left her features. “There’s this great sushi place…”
“...Zen Sushi on Newport Boulevard?” Nish finished for her. Jen’s eyes widened.
“I think we’ll get along great,” she laughed.
