Jayati opened her mouth to retort something about biracial isn't that weird, they were in California not Utah for fucksake but the giggle cut her off and her head whipped around towards the sound like a hunting dog who just heard a stick break. She didn't like it when someone snuck up on her, even a child.
The sound stopped but Jayati was already moving towards it, no way could a child get away that fast unseen and so quiet. It was unsettling, moreso when it was combined with everything else that had been happening this week. Had she not been able to tell that the woman's distress was genuine she would have suspected her of being a part of all this as well.
"Not at this juncture." The response was quiet and distracted as she glanced around, paranoid that the child had been snatched, or some other sort of malevolent trickery was at work. Her hackles raised and she felt a burning sort of ire starting to brew just under her skin at the thought of someone using this woman's kid to taunt her or manipulate the other residents. Jayati had done a great many bad things in her days, but not to children. At least not this young.
