Who: The lovely Naea and Pierce!
What: Lunch. Cheesy pasta goodness.
Where: The closest Italian restaurant.
When: Backdated to after this phone call.
Warnings: No! Pierce has a dartboard with David's face on it but he wouldn't sleep with his brother's girlfriend. Yeesh.

It had been surprising to hear from Naea all of a sudden, but then again, they were living in the same building now - and had been in contact for a little over a year. Pierce had started the whole thing. It was a way to make sure David was doing alright without actually bothering him, and Pierce didn't feel guilty about getting to know Naea at the same time. He would have felt guilty, however, if David had gotten shot in the face by some thug he owed money to. Their epic 'you're cut off from the family' fight had occurred over twenty years ago, and even though shit had hit the fan, Pierce wanted David alive, thank you. Planning a funeral for his kid brother was not on Pierce's agenda anytime soon. And he hoped that, if he suddenly kicked the bucket, David would at least help ensure that Pierce's dead body didn't get tossed into the ocean or buried in a pine box, invaded by squirrels.

But anyway, now was the time for lunch with Naea, whom he genuinely liked. She was sweet and kind and had a lot of patience and people skills. She'd have to, in order to have put up with David for so long. But she was smarter than people gave her credit for, and still very young so the world was her oyster. He arrived within ten minutes as he said he would, and climbed the stairs to the sixth floor, knocking on the door to her and David's apartment. He knew of a good Italian restaurant that was nearby, so he would take her there and then head back to work after dropping her back home. Pierce was due for another late night in the office anyway.

Naea was just pulling her other shoe on when she heard who she assumed to be Pierce knock at the door. She hopped to the door while tugging on the Converse (she hated tying an untying shoes; so she generally left them tied enough to slip a foot in and out fairly easily), unlocked and opened it with a pretty smile. "Hi, Pierce. It's nice to see you! C'mon in... Just need to grab my purse." Which was all the way in the bedroom.

It occasionally intrigued her just how well she and Pierce got along. It would take an ignorant person to see just how different he and David were, and yet there were similarities. Mostly familial--a facial expression here or there. But the one that stood out the most was the stubbornness, tenacity and charm. She and Pierce had been speaking strictly on the phone for about a year, once a month or so. It was only after she baked him a cake that she got to meet him for the first time in person. And he had been just as charming in person as he had been on the line.

Perhaps Naea felt a teensy bit bad for building a friendship with David's estranged brother, but he'd never been anything but kind to her and had only been checking on his brother when they began talking. The rest had just come along with it.

"Busy day today?" Linnaea called from the bedroom before strolling out with a purse slung over her shoulder.

"Of course, always busy. But that's the way I like it," Pierce confirmed, offering his arm to Naea as they vacated the premises. "I have trouble with sitting still for long periods of time. And there's always work to be done too." Truth be told, his workaholic ways were firmly ingrained in him - but that didn't mean that, yes, he probably was about due for a vacation sometime this century. "How's your schoolwork coming along?" he asked, then glanced at her to see if she wanted to take the stairs down or brave the finicky elevator.

"Better busy than wanting to stab yourself in the eye out of boredom." She took his arm and suddenly felt very proper, which was kind of nice, deciding to descend the stairs instead of dealing with the elevator. People had been stuck in it, she'd heard, it never landed on the right floor for David, but she had never had an issue with it.

Besides... It felt good to stretch the limbs.

"Just don't work yourself to death. There's no fun in that and life just isn't meant to be without some fun." Naea smiled at his schoolwork question and shrugged slightly. "It's coming. I've never been much of a math whiz, but I'm doing all right. Thankfully I don't have a billion classes left from before, so hopefully I can get all of my credits situated sooner than later. I'd like to be able to quit the diner at some point in my life."

The stairs it was. Pierce preferred the stairs as well - he had to keep in shape and not turn into an old codger. There was plenty of time for that but he planned to stay as active as possible, and probably would still be active even after he was dead. He'd be the busiest and most irritating ghost ever, most likely.

"Don't stab yourself in the eye, love," he chuckled as they entered the lobby. "If you promise that, then I promise I won't work myself to death. Sometimes I need a little reminder though. And I'd say you're destined for more than diner work, yes. You are a woman of many talents." Like a chivalrous knight in shining armor - or in this case, a suit and tie - he held the front door open for Naea. "The restaurant's just a few blocks up the street, do you mind walking? It's a nice day out."

She laughed in her melodious way at his wanting her to promise not to stab herself in the eye. "Deal. I rather enjoy my vision as it is, thank you very much and I much prefer you amongst the living and breathing."

Ah, the opening of doors for ladies. Something that seemed very lost on most guys her age and the girls as well. Some didn't feel the need to, just didn't care or were never taught manners. It was very possible for a woman to be independent but still want just a little chivalry in her life. David was good about opening doors for her, even though she was generally opening it first. "A walk sounds lovely, actually. It's not a billion degrees out so, that's a good start."

Naea smiles prettily at a mother passing by with her infant in a stroller, fighting the want to stop just to see if she could make the baby smile, too. "So, what did bring you to Pax Letale, Pierce? It couldn't have been David."

He watched Naea beam at the mother with her little rugrat, and he smiled a bit at the scene. Resist the urge to have children with the lost Gregory brother, sweetheart. But he kept that thought to himself. "No, it definitely wasn't David," Pierce admitted. "Though I suppose I won't have to call and bother you while simultaneously checking on him. It just seemed like a good idea to move in," he went on, and that was true - things worked out that way and he was grateful for it. "I'm divorced so what else is a lonely bachelor to do?" he chuckled. "My son lives in the building too. Though he would probably prefer that I didn't."

"Well, if you want to call and bother me, I don't mind." She was sure David did, but there really wasn't much of a reason to state the obvious, much like how people ignored the 800 lbs. gorilla in the room. And yet, she found herself grinning, anyway. "You could throw some raucous stag parties, Pierce."

Naea looked up at him at the mention of his son. "I know you told me a little about him before, but I didn't know he was living there. Small world." Oh, if only she knew. "How's he doing, anyway?" Naea never really pried into Pierce's life and generally only took the information he shared with her at face value when she did ask. She knew he had a son and that he had been in a pretty debilitating accident, and that was pretty much the long and short of it.

"Thank you, I'm pretty sure I'll take you up on that," he promised. "You have to keep me updated on how things are going for you too." And he meant that. Some people didn't know how to talk to others or have decent conversations, but Naea never had to worry about that. She was actually very charming.

At the mention of Billy, Pierce pursed his lips in amusement. The kid was his pride and joy, but man alive, he could be stubborn sometimes. "He's doing well," Father Dearest confirmed as they approached the restaurant, and he could already smell the carbohydrates and garlic wafting outside. Of course, he opened the door for his lovely lunch date. "His big thing is independence, wanting to make it on his own - and while I respect that, I'm still overprotective because of what he's been through. But I can't help it. He's thirty but he's still my boy. It'll be that way when I'm in an old folks home eating applesauce three meals a day too."

"I'm glad to hear it," she replied, stepping into the restaurant. Naea's stomach growled mightily at the scent of garlic, basil and oregano--such a big noise for such a small woman. Oh, but it was delightful! "I think once we've been out and about and away from parents, we want to make sure that we can keep our independence and keep it well. Even when things go wrong, we want to show everyone--ourselves especially--that we're strong enough to go forward."

She paused for a moment while the 'Shiny, Happy Hostess' ((ooc: As sung to the tune of 'Shiny, Happy People' by REM)) led them to a table booth for two. "But you know," she slid into the booth easily. "it's really nice to be able to have someone to lean on when things do get rough, even though we don't want to admit it." Naea hadn't really had that in the last five years, save the court and occasionally her Aunt Mary, her mother's sister. Most of the family had shunned her for accusing her father of molestation ("What's wrong with you, Linnaea?! He would never do such a thing! You're nothing but a selfish whore!").

She smiled across the table to her handsome lunch date and ordered a water with lime instead of lemon.

Pierce returned the smile as he slid into the booth, and when it was time for drink orders he stuck with iced tea, no lemon. Passing Naea a menu, he opened it up to give it a look-over. Should he go super healthy or no? Decisions, decisions!

"That's true, everyone needs a confidante of some sorts, right?" he asked rhetorically. "Harrison's mother was good at that. She still is, I should say." He still kept in touch with his ex-wife, even though they were divorced. And especially lately - they couldn't not keep in touch when their son was going through something so difficult. "Not to generalize, but I think women are gifted with that sort of thing though," he noted. "Must be why married men live longer."

Naea scanned through the menu as Pierce spoke of his boy, his ex-wife and married men's longevity. "It's highly possible. Of course," she smirks mischievously from behind the menu and peeks over it at Pierce. "men are often also the first to go. Take that as you will." She winks after wiggling her eyebrows at him with a chuckle and takes back to the menu, feeling inwardly elated at the sight of eggplant parmesan and a grilled herb polenta. She was sold.

Closing her menu and sitting it down politely, Naea watches Pierce for a moment. It was interesting how so completely different and so very alike he and David could be all at once. Must be a brotherly thing. "So, what is Harrison doing with his time when he's not going through his mess of rehab? Is he getting out at all?"

Pierce laughed, shaking his head. "Well, I can see how that would be true. I still haven't understood the vast mystery of women, and I'm old as dirt," he said as a matter-of-fact, but his blue eyes sparked with amusement at the statement anyway. He was actually elated at the idea of angel hair pasta with artichokes, so that's what he decided on.

"He gets out on occasion, yes," Pierce said, folding his hands on the table. "He has a car, and it was hell to get it rigged up so he could drive it, but it's important to him to be able to do that. But of course I worry about him driving long distances. You should meet him sometime," he added. "I think you'd get along nicely." They were both the type to get along with most anyone, so that was already a bonus there.

"Definitely good that he gets out and about, and on his own at that." Naea pauses to squeeze the lime into her water and swirls it around with her straw. "I just can't imagine what he went through to even get that far. How frightening." She frowns slightly at the thought, then breaks a smile. "I would like to meet him sometime, yes. Though I can't imagine he'd be gung-ho about a strange girl knocking on his door." Some people might actually enjoy that, but she couldn't imagine a complete stranger saying, 'Oh! Hello! Come in, won't you?!'

Sipping on her water, Naea contemplates something. "We really should have a building get-together somewhere, sometime. I mean, we already all talk via the forum, anyway. Might be good to mingle. I'd say my place, but I think I can fit about six in chairs. Otherwise, it's standing room only."

"Well, I could always introduce you," Pierce amended, even though Billy was probably used to that sort of thing - he had been during his days as a rockstar, anyway. Even if it weirded him out a little. "So you don't have to just show up awkwardly at his door. Though I taught him manners and he wouldn't be rude to a nice girl such as yourself, especially one who's practically family."

He thought a building get-together would be nice too, despite that he and Nate were probably the oldest ones. Still, they could drink with the best of 'em. "Why not? It would be entertaining, that's for sure. Maybe something on the beach, since it's right outside."

She smiled when he referred to her as 'practically family.' It was really, really nice to hear, despite the fact that he and David attempted to avoid each other like magnetic poles. "Well, if we do get something of a get-together going, that would likely be a better place to meet your son. Simply knocking on his door because you have the idea we should meet seems silly." Naea chuckled from her water glass as she sipped on it. If only she knew that the son in question was the lead of one of her favorite bands. It was just something that had never come up, and she'd never made the connection. "I'm completely game if you are for a party for all of us degenerates."

Naea frowns slightly into her glass. "Not entirely sure that David would rise to the occasion, but if not, spoilsport on him."

"Degenerates? I think us old folk can handle you all," Pierce said, flashing his million-dollar smile. "Nate and I were degenerates back in our day - I've mentioned him, right? We go back to the paleolithic era together."

The frown made Pierce frown as well, but his was only a flicker, very brief. "David can be stubborn." Understatement, and obviously Naea knew that. "And he won't want to be in the same place as me. Even being in the same building is an annoyance, so I doubt he would. But that's alright." The food arrived then, hopefully brightening the conversation. It sure smelled good. "Fun can be had otherwise."

"When I said 'degenerates', I meant that to include all of us." Naea smiled and unfolded her napkin to lay across her lap. She liked Pierce. He seemed very much to be the father/brother/uncle/older male influence she'd always wanted but never really had. Sure, David was older, but the relationship was (very obviously) very different. He was very different.

She sighed at the mention of David, moving her hands out of the way as their meals arrived (weren't lunchtime speeds great?) and inhaled the wonderful aroma, which seemed to calm her a bit. Naea picked up her fork and tapped it gently on the table. "I think it'll be fun, regardless." She knew that if David found out about this little outing, he'd likely not talk to her for a week, but there were just some things he was going to have to get over or tell her just what in the hell the problem was to begin with. "I can't drink, but maybe I can entertain with a song or two on my guitar. Hendrix, I am not, but maybe I can channel a little Joni Mitchell. And depress everybody." The dark-haired girl laughed softly and offered her own smile to Pierce.

The fork sunk into her grilled polenta with a bit of a crunch and Naea smiled as though someone had begun to rub her shoulders as she tasted it. Oh, heaven! in an Italian corn dish...

Pierce laughed at that. "Oh, all of us, huh?" His eyes twinkled deviously. "Fair enough, I guess." He too placed his napkin in his lap, picking up his fork and twirling it once before diving into the pasta.

He had forgotten that Naea was so young! Or at least, still not of legal drinking age. She seemed so much more mature than her nineteen years. "If you have a sip or two of beer, I won't call the cops. I promise," he winked. "But you showing off your guitar skills would also be appreciated. My son is a musician too, he'd probably appreciate it."

Naea appeared thoughtful as she chewed on a bit of her eggplant. "Is he?" she said, after a bit of water. "Does he live in 103? Because when I head down to get the mail, I hear some pretty fantastic music coming from inside, and it's not a recording." She laughed softly and shook her head. "And there's not a chance in hell I'm remotely that good."

"He does, in fact," Pierce nodded. "I would say he's quite talented, but I may be biased." He didn't exactly approve of Billy's rock and roll lifestyle, but he knew that music was important to his son and wouldn't ever try to take that away from him. "How long have you been playing?" he asked Naea, taking a sip of iced tea.

"He's very talented, for sure, and I don't know a thing about him." She goes after her polenta again. "Me? Wow... well, I was probably about eleven when I finally picked it up and started teaching myself with books and CDs I picked up from the library. It--the guitar-- was my Mama's. I vaguely remember her playing, but I know she loved to." Naea smiles, albeit sadly. "When I moved out, I didn't have as much time with school and work, but I took advantage of lunch hours and days off."

"Ah, self taught? That's impressive," Pierce said sincerely as he twirled his fork, effectively spearing a good chunk of pasta. "You most definitely should keep at it, if it's something you enjoy. We make time for things that we love, things that are important to us." And he wasn't musical in the slightest, but he understood the need for some sort of creative release. He felt that way about fencing.

Naea smiled prettily, stabbing at her eggplant gently before slicing a small hunk off. "Mama loved music. I remember that the house was always full of music. Always. Whether it was her playing or singing or just having music on the stereo, it was there. When she was gone, Daddy just didn't much feel like the music anymore, I guess." She didn't say much about when she remembered him beginning his downward spiral, when she would have to do her homework in whatever various bar that would let her in with him so he could play poker and would make her something from the kitchen before it closed. That ended about age eleven when Naea started 'blossoming' and her father had enough sense to keep her away from his asshole drinking buddies and at home.

And that had been about the time she picked up the guitar.

Naea swallowed down her melancholy and offered a smile to Pierce. "I enjoy it. Like I said, I'm not really great at it, but it's nice to get the clouds out of your system and into something a little more aesthetic. Which, I can imagine, is a good place for Harrison to be." Spearing that bit of eggplant, she points the fork at Pierce. "We could totally jam sometime, although it sounds like he could run circles around me and my little acoustic."

Pierce tilted his head a bit, listening to Naea as a fond smile appeared - he was always impressed with how well she handled things. Most people raised in that sort of environment would go off and repeat the same mistakes as their deadbeat parent, and blame it on the hardship of their life like that would be an excuse, but she never did.

"Music's the medicine of the mind, right? That's what they say," he replied. "And, oh, I'm sure you're more talented than you give yourself credit for. He might have to watch out for you, you'll give him some competition. I'll just be in my office, making sure people read the news and whatnot." Ah, the wonders of being a communications guru. Pierce loved his job, though he often wondered who would take his place when he finally kicked the bucket. He'd just have to live forever.

"Music of the mind and voice of the soul." Her smile was still in the department of sadness, but it was difficult not to smile when Pierce made her want to. Naea sipped on her water and sighed softly. "From the sounds of it, I doubt Harrison would feel threatened by my rendition of "In My Life" by The Beatles. Nevertheless, I would like to play with him sometime. It would be fun. I think.

"Out of curiosity, Pierce... Just what got you into communications? You strike me as someone who could very much be the CEO of The World." And he did. He had a very commanding presence, could be intimidating if he wanted to be, and seemed to have all that he could want at his fingertips. It wasn't a wonder why David felt inferior to his brother because Naea did from time to time herself, even though all of their conversations up until this point were by telephone.

"CEO of the World?" Pierce repeated, laughing at the title. He was glad that he had just finished taking a sip of tea because otherwise he would have choked on it. "Has a ring to it, I suppose," he grinned. "Well, it's been in the family for awhile. Started with my great-grandfather, actually, so it sort of just fell into my lap but I enjoy it a great deal. If I had studied underwater basket weaving in college then I never would have met Nate, or Harrison's mother." Both were obviously very important to him, and one might be able to assume that he missed his wife. A little. They still kept in touch and were friendly but it was obviously a bit different since they weren't married anymore.

Naea quirked a slender brow with a chuckle. "I can't imagine you'd meet too many people that suited you majoring in 'underwater basket weaving'." She ponders this briefly before, "Or anybody for that matter. Speaking of work, what time do you need to head back?" She dabbed at her lips with her napkin, removing some rogue marinara before it made her look ridiculous. "I don't want to keep you if you have things to tend to."

As tempted as she was to want to eat more, that thought flew out the window. Her features scrunched up a bit at her feeling of impending stomach doom. "I think I need a box. Makes for a good dinner."

Pierce slid the Blackberry from its holster and checked the time. "I'm in no rush, my dear," he said honestly. "I own the company, I can go back when I want." This was said with a smile, all in good fun, though it was true. Alex had been pestering him to take it easy with work for awhile now, so a lunch that lasted longer than fifteen minutes wouldn't kill him.

But he asked for a to-go box when the waiter came back, and also the check, which Pierce paid with a flick of his wrist as he signed the credit card slip. "It was nice of you to meet me in public! We'll have to meet again for sure, especially since we're neighbors now."

"It was a pleasure, trust me." Naea smiled as she scooped her leftover food into the box, carefully setting the box aside for now. "Thank you for lunch. You didn't have to buy." Going Dutch was her idea, anyway. "Let me next time."

She leaned forward to rest her elbows on the table. It had definitely been nice to get out of the apartment and away from her homework for the time being. Besides that, Pierce had been nothing but very pleasant company, which was always wanted. "Do you ever get time to yourself, other than lunch?"

"Not a problem," Pierce smiled, full of charm as per usual. "Time to myself?" The question made him laugh a little. "Eh, occasionally I can get in some fencing practice." Or shooting at the firing range with Nate; that was always a welcome distraction too. "But there never seems to be enough hours in the day for those types of things. I'd be a lot more satisfied if there were more than 24 hours to attempt to use efficiently." He was a busy, busy man! But he had always been that way, therefore, was used to such things.

"Thirty-six hours may be sufficient to all the things I need and want to do. Fencing isn't one of them, but I've always wanted to try stabbing and jabbing with a sabre. They had fencing in high school, but I couldn't afford the equipment." Naea shrugged this off, as she did most things regarding her high school days before she had to drop.

Naea arched an eyebrow, something akin to sternly with a smirk, and pointed at her friend. "Remember what I said about working yourself to death. I won't have it! Don't make me take you over my knee." Right about the time the words left Linnaea's lips, a suddenly startled, slightly balding, suffered from 'Dunlop Syndrome' and not particularly good looking middle-aged man passed them. His expression went from 'What the deuce?!' to 'Hey, baby...'

Linnaea was good at ignoring looks like that. She was also occasionally good at fucking with people. She flashed a million-dollar smile and a wink at the man, then promptly rolled her eyes with a ridiculous face when he passed.

"Well, the sabre's one of the three weapons used in fencing. I have a couple and I could teach you if you want," Pierce offered. He wouldn't mind - he loved the sport and had plenty of equipment to share with people he liked. And of course he liked Naea.

He laughed at the spanking comment, but it was short-lived because he was cut off by a particularly asinine person who was just asking for an ass-whooping. A second later, Pierce shot figurative laser beams from his retinas in a glare from Hell, meant to cause shriveling up and dying in the recipient.

"Idiot," he mumbled, tsk-ing the obvious stupidity at work here.

Naea smirked and shook her head. "He's harmless," she replied, inwardly fascinated that someone's eyes could come so close to actually shooting daggers. "After working at the diner for so long, I've learned a lot about men in general and when to trust my gut. Like, which one would strangle me in an alley, which one wants me to be his secret love affair when his wife goes out of town. Things like that." Naea, over the last five years, had learned well to avoid the majority of male customers in any setting outside of work. David, well... he had been the exception. She thumbs behind her. "The only thing that guy's gonna do is crank one out in the bathroom when he gets back to work." Crude? Yes. The truth? Absolutely.

"As for the fencing, that would definitely be awesome, Pierce." Linnaea smiled and sipped on her water. "Just a matter of finding the time right now, but I will take you up on that at some point."

"Crank one out, eh?" Pierce laughed at the description. He could give off the impression that he was well-tailored and pristine in a suit and tie but he really did have a sense of humor, and not necessarily a clean one. "Probably so, but with me around, I just don't let idiots talk to lovely ladies like that. I've had to kick many an ass in my day, love."

He smiled too, always pleased to have an opportunity to fence. "Of course, not a problem. It's a useful skill to have as well."

Naea blushed slightly. She couldn't remember the last time someone was ready to put up the ol' fisticuffs to defend her. She'd been on her own so long and dealt with far worse than a random comment and look that she'd never bothered to pay attention. "Well," she said. "Thank you. I'm not sure I know what else to say." Her smile was mildly shy. Linnaea never blushed. The last time she had was after a sweet compliment David had given her not long after they'd met.

"It'll be nice to learn how to jab and avoid. If both of us have an opportunity, of course."
