Who: Brighid & Samuel.
What: Cupcakes, courtesy of Mrs Griffin-Laurent.
Where: #705.
When: Late evening, after this.
Warnings: None yet.

Samuel took the stairs down from P3 two at a time, a broad grin brightening his features. Red velvet would not have been his first choice for cupcakes, but free cupcakes were always a welcome thing. Further, judging by the trappings of the penthouse suites, it seemed a reasonable guess that the six cupcakes he bore down to his own level had likely cost what he himself had never spent on a single dessert; red velvet or no, they would be something to behold. Six, though, seemed too many to keep to himself, and not nearly enough to take to work. He thought through the building's tenants, considering each one he knew, deciding whether he knew each of them well enough to invade their apartments with baked goods at this relatively late hour.

In the end it was Brighid who came to mind. He had found no feasible way to apologize for the argument she had walked in on - and a literal apology, whether to Brighid or Lia herself, had not at all crossed his mind - and free dessert seemed like as good a method as any. So he bypassed his own apartment, his steps carrying him straight to her door. Balancing the carefully wrapped package on one palm, he rapped at the door.

"Brighid? I come bearing gifts..."

She’d been reading when the knock came at the door, and Samuel’s voice propelled her off the couch and to the front door. She paused to make sure the blue and green flannel pajama pants and grey t-shirt she had been lounging in were unrumpled and to run a hand over her head, insuring her hair was all gathered back into her ponytail. Satisfied with her appearance, Brighid unlocked and opened the door.

“Sergeant- er- Samuel! Sure it’s good to see you. Would you like to come in, then?”

"I do, unless you don't want any of these cupcakes." He slipped into the open door, already opening the lid to the box in his hands. "I think they're still a little warm. I didn't want them to go to waste, so here I am." He looked around, recognizing the floor plan - the essentials of it, anyway - from his own space next door. He moved into the kitchen, trailing the scent of fresh-baked food behind him. "Judging by the look of these," he said, "and the posh apartment of our gracious donor, no expense was spared in making these things. I hope you like red velvet." No mention was made of the fact that this was a peace laurel, of a sort; in truth, Samuel hoped to avoid the subject of the quasi-public, quasi-embarrassing argument altogether.

Napkins he procured quickly enough, but plates eluded him. After a few cabinets opened and closed, at last he called out, "Plates? Or are paper towels fine? I'm not really company, I guess. No need to stand on ceremony."

Brighid trailed after him, leaning against the entry to the kitchen and watching in bemusement as he fumbled through her cabinets. "Sure you wouldn't like to go through the rest?" she asked cheekily before moving in and procuring two small plates from the next cabinet to the right. Handing them to him, she moved back a cabinet to the left to reveal glasses, tea cups and coffee mugs. "Something to drink, then? You'll have to do with water or juice, or I could make us a cuppa."

"Nah, water's fine." The nature of her amused, thinly veiled reprimand escaped him; the idea that he was an interloper in someone else's space utterly eluded him. He set the plates down, all but tossing a cupcake onto each one. A second cupcake called to him, but he knew the price he would pay were he to give in. His twenties, he lamented inwardly, were sadly behind him. He picked up his plate, napkin swept neatly beneath it should it prove necessary, and began peeling the little wrapper from the spongy cake. Leaning back against the counter, he watched her move around the kitchen, a far better host than he might have been. "So how are you acclimating?" he asked. "Looks like you got moved in well enough."

"Ah, but I had plenty of help, yeah?" Taking two glasses out of the cabinet before closing it, she moved across to the fridge and poured them each a glass of water from a filtered pitcher. "Yourself and those lads from the furniture store. D'ya' know they even helped unpack all the dishes? Wasn't expectin' that." Pitcher returned to its place, she set his glass on the counter beside him then reached for her cupcake. "Sure this smells fabulous. Where did you get them?"

He gave a little bow from the waist at the mention of his help, happy to take what credit was due to him - and some extra, besides. He had been conspicuously absent from the furniture moving itself, but he had seen no reason to go out of his way, least of all when hired help was on the job.

"Mrs. Griffen-Laurent, she calls herself," he said. He pulled a sizable bite from the cupcake, popping it into his mouth. Red velvet or not, Samuel had to admit it was one of the best desserts he'd had, even including the rare attempts at culinary artistry his mother had attempted. After a moment or two of thoughtful, relatively polite chewing, he added, "Honey, I think's her name. Never met her before. But then, us peasants aren't allowed above a certain floor. I'm surprised nobody came after me with a Taser just for setting foot out of bounds. It's a whole different world up there, kiddo."

Leaning against the counter opposite her guest, Brighid dipped the tip of one finger into the generous icing on the cupcake in her hand then brought it to her lips for a taste. She nodded in approval then unwrapped the cake itself and took a small bite. "Mmm. Brilliant." After another bite, she smiled at him. "Have I moved into the peasant bracket with you, then, or am I still a spoiled prat?"

He laughed aloud at her question, thankful he hadn't been in the middle of a bite as she'd let that little barb slip. He made a great show of considering his options, his grey-green eyes turned heavenward as he pondered. "Peasant by choice," he decided. He pointed an index finger at her, a narrow streak of icing smeared across his fingertip. "You could be up there with Lia and Honey and all the rest. You aren't." He shrugged, putting his smudged finger to his lips, licking the icing from his skin. "Your parents may foot the bill, but at least they're teaching you some modesty."

Brighid chuckled and took another bite. "That's a relief then, and they'll be happy to know it," she replied after she swallowed the warm cake. "Lia?" Cocking her head to one side, she examined Samuel. "The girl you were rowing with in the lift, yeah? I met her the other day. You don't like her?" She took a drink of her water while awaiting his reply.

"Who said I didn't like her?" For a time Samuel looked genuinely confused, his brow furrowing as he downed the bulk of what remained of his dessert. He wiped his hands, still sticky with icing, on his napkin. "She pisses me off, but that doesn't mean I don't like her. My ex pissed me off all the time, and that worked just fine for years." He gave a quiet laugh, then, but it seemed more a sound of fond nostalgia than anything; it was apparent he saw no issue with such an arrangement, and indeed found it quite pleasing, for whatever reason. "Lia thinks just because she's a self-proclaimed expert in one area, that means she knows about whatever else she sets her pretty head to. She doesn't. I was just... setting her facts straight."

Brighid considered this as she silently chewed more of her cupcake. After a few moments, she nodded slowly. "So you do like her. And almost coming to blows with her in the lift is something like pulling her pigtails in the schoolyard and running away, then? Sure you men are a crazy lot, d'ya' know that, Samuel?" Her head now wagged in the negative. "Bloody starkers." Guessing he might object, she plowed ahead.

"You should take her a cupcake, then. A peace offering. And it won't cost you anything but a few seconds on the stairs. Unless you get stuck in that crazy lift. It must be male, too."

His lips had thinned to a narrow line, downturned at the corners. Inwardly he knew she was right; the comparison was as vivid as it was apt. Outwardly, however, it was frustrating to hear his approach put in such terms. "Like y'all are any better," he mumbled, sulky as a child. His rough fingertips plucked at a corner of the icing-smeared wrapper. "And why should I take her anything?" He looked up from his worrying fingertips, his attempt at a frown failing, though still valiantly avoiding becoming a smirk. "I know you won't believe me now, but she really did start that." Even as he said the words, he knew how asinine they sounded. Even he wasn't certain he believed them. "Doing that will cost me that walk and my pride. And the joy of knowing I was right. You know she'll make me apologize, or something equally stupid."

His petulance amused her, and while Brighid knew she ought not, she grinned. She quickly hid it by taking the last bite of cupcake. She shrugged, then took a drink of water. "Suit yourself then, Sergeant." The last was said with as sweet a smile as she could muster without laughing at him. "I imagine you could even convince yourself she doesn't like cupcakes as an excuse not to take them up, yeah?"

"Maybe she doesn't." His shrug was a close mirror of hers. "Not everyone likes red velvet, you know." He popped what remained of the dwindling cupcake into his mouth, graciously keeping his mouth closed in spite of his suddenly puffed out cheeks. The cupcake thus dispatched, he flicked his tongue out over his lips, finishing off what icing clung to his smiling mouth. "She seems more like chocolate, I think. Maybe dark chocolate. Rich and bitter." He laughed at his own joke, pushing off the counter, beginning the search for a trash bin. "Not that that's a bad thing, I guess."

She couldn't help it: she laughed. Then she immediately covered her mouth with her free hand and tried to school her face into a disapproving expression. "Under the sink," she told him, mostly to distract herself. That accomplished, she sighed.

"Ah, well. Maybe it's just as well, yeah? It wouldn't do to have her thinkin' you might actually like her."

"Hell no," he said, moving where she'd directed. "I'd never hear the end of it." Leaning down, he tossed cupcake wrapper and napkin into the bin, gently pushing the cabinet door closed. "But what about you, kiddo?" He straightened up, looking over to her from beneath a sharply arched brow. "You see anyone around the building who catches your eye?" He grinned, pleased with his idea before he'd even spoken it. "Anybody I should run a background check on?"
