Who run the world?
Who: BB & Maxine.
What: The bombastic meets with the feline.
Where: Pax Letale lobby.
When: Friday morning
BB pushed wide open the Pax Letale front doors, looking at her fitbit to watch as the numbers added up. She ran nearly the same amount every day, her willowy figure a testament to her consistency, but she loved seeing proof positive of her accomplishment. It was a strange spike of adrenaline that she couldn't deny, and she swung to the right as she went to get her mail. One hand raised in greeting toward Stephan's ever-present figure, and she paused.
"Seriously, do you ever get out from behind that desk?"
Stephan's mouth widened in something of a smile, similar to an expression a shark might make. "Only in my dreams, my dear."
BB shook her head, grinning all the while. "You'd think they'd at least hire more than one of you..."
"Trying to be rid of me so soon, Ms. Bernard?"
BB waved her hands in the air, shaking her head. "Of course not! This place would fall down without you, Stephan."
The smile turned knowing. "It might very well," he replied. "Let me know if there's anything I can do for you, Ms. Bernard."
"Ah, c'mon, how many times now have I told you to call me BB?"
Stephan shook his head, the glacial smile unabating. "Believe me, management wouldn't like me getting too personal with their tenants."
Just then Max came out of the elevator, still yawning from sleep. She wasn’t usually up this early, and looked slightly half-asleep, but she had been expecting a call from her firm about a new client and had set her alarm. She was also expecting a package from Amazon, so she headed downstairs in her pajamas (a sleeveless t-shirt with a kitten on it and sleep pants with cats all over them) to collect her mail.
Stepping into the lobby, she only just then realised she was wearing said pajamas as soon as she saw other people. Her eyes widened with alarm, but it was too late to go back upstairs now that she’d been spotted. So instead she smile happily as if she owned the place and sauntered into the lobby. “Morning, Stephan,” she greeted him like they were buddies, glancing briefly at the girl he was talking too and then back to their concierge. “By the way, you work that eyeshadow,” she added, heading across the lobby towards the mailboxes.
Stephan smiled congenially at the new addition, and BB's jaw nearly hit the floor. She quickly wound it back up, waving a distracted goodbye at Stephan as she moved toward the mailboxes as well.
"Hey... Haven't seen you around here..." BB tried to be smooth as she walked to her mailbox, but the woman's profile suddenly seemed so very familiar. BB's eyes narrowed. "You're not a celebrity, right?"
Max looked up at the girl from her small handful of mail, an eyebrow raised in amusement. “Excuse me?” she asked, not having heard her clearly at first. She took a moment to look the girl over, making the snap judgement that she was a fun, playful, but silly girl. “I'm not a celebrity,” she replied, looking back down at her mail with a slightly guarded smile.
"You look so familiar, though, and that keeps happening way too much around here." BB studied the other woman for a longer moment, and then a lightbulb seemed to click. BB nearly jumped forward, suddenly pointing at the other woman, though her arm wasn't fully extended. "I know where I've seen you before! The National Enquirer!" Her hand bounced back, covering her mouth. "Oh my god, you were the one with Jamie Bell going to that restaurant!! You're from Eagle Eye Security!! Oh my god you're like a Jenny Bond!!"
Max’s eyes darted up, glancing around the very empty lobby before resting back on that girl. “Say it a little louder, why don’t you?” she said with a little smirk, flipping one letter open to see where it came from. Ironically, it was paperwork from Eagle Eye. “Who are you, some kind of reporter?” she asked, eyeing her a little more closely, suddenly hyper aware that she was wearing pajamas that she really didn’t want plastered in some tabloid.
"Maybe," BB replied, smiling, scooting a little closer to peer at the document the woman was handling. "You ever hear of a little rag called TMZ?"
Max sighed on the inside. “Shit, you guys,” she muttered with a mixture of annoyance and amusement. “I think I might have broken one of your co-workers’ wrists a while back for getting too close to my client,” she said. It was meant to sound apologetic, but it came out sounding proud. “Sorry,” she added unconvincingly.
BB shrugged, her grin edging on maniacal. "Hey, wasn't my wrist, and sometimes it's part of the job," she replied easily, still all but vibrating from excitement. "Wait, so, which client? When? Oh my gooood, living here just gets better and better."
Max closed her eyes for a second opinion do and took a bracing breath. This girl was like the energizer bunny. “It was a while ago, I'm sure one of your other bloodhounds got the story.” This girl was seriously going to make her read the fine print this on those NDA documents. She held out the hand that wasn't clutching get her mail. “Max,” she said with an impish grin.
BB didn't hesitate to take the woman's hand. "Brittany, but you can call me BB. Pretty much everybody does." She shook it with just as much excitement as she was currently generating, releasing it after only a prolonged few seconds. "So what's your next assignment? Are you moving up the roster, and doing some more A-listers? Which premiere are you going to? Oh my god, could you get me in?!"
She laughed at BB's precociousness, putting up a hand as if to try and calm her down. “I don't know yet; maybe, I get a mix; none any time soon; and no, I don't think so,” she answered with a grin. “Seriously, privacy is part of the job. Stuff the public already knows about is fair game though, like award ceremonies and premieres. I never know where I'm going until I get the call.” sometimes a week in advance, sometimes the night before. She narrowed her eyes slightly in a playful smile. “I'm not getting rid of you, am I?” she asked, now suddenly knowing how her clients felt.
The tenacious reporter shook her head, albeit goodnaturedly. "Nope, I mean, if you did, I wouldn't be doing my job, would I?" She finally stepped away, instead going to her own mailbox, but was unable to stop glancing over her shoulder at the fine figure Maxine offered. Beyond that, there was the promise of a potential scoop, if she could only play her cards right. She switched tack. "So how long you been here? I thought I heard movers the other day, but I'm out at such random hours that it's hard to say it's not just some maintenance or something being done. I definitely would've noticed you around before, with that cute ass."
She chuckled softly at the obvious flirtation. “I moved in last week,” she said in answer to her question, watching the other woman collect her mail. “It’s a strange building, I was expecting the place to be full with how hard it was to get a lease, but it’s practically empty.” She already knew she shared her floor with Daniel, but she hadn’t seen anyone else yet. “What floor are you on?” she asked, just making conversation, not realizing the can of worms she was about to pop open.
"Numero dos," BB replied, holding up a peace sign. "Doesn't take more than a few steps or a quick ride in the elevator to get to my door." She turned away for a moment, pulling mail out of her box and sorting through it, frowning at the high amount of junk. It was quickly dispensed of in a nearby trash can. She glanced back to Max. "And you?"
She winced on the inside and smiled on the outside. “Same,” she admitted. “I'm in 204...I guess right down the hall from you.” She glanced over at Stephan who didn't look up from his magazine, and then back to BB. She turned towards the elevators, glancing briefly back at her to see if she'd follow. “So I guess we're neighbours,” she said good-naturedly, stabbing the up button with her thumb.
"Oh my god, and how awesome is that?!" Clearly not as awesome in Max's mind, but BB was enthralled with the idea of a new tenant on the floor she'd previously only shared with Daniel. "Have you met Daniel? He's in 209, right next door to mine. He's kind of a dick, sometimes, but yeah, like, god I'm so glad this place is starting to fill up a little more."
She stepped into the elevator and nodded. “Yeah, he's an old friend...we work together. Weird that we ended up on the same floor, though.” Something she could add to the never ending list of weird things in this building. She looked at BB a little closer. “We’re actually starting a self defense class here in the building. You should come.”
BB trailed quickly after Maxine into the transportation box, leaning against one wall.
"IIII don't know if that's a good idea," she replied. "I mean, I've got mace and stuff, and the last time someone tried to mug me while I was investigating a gig got a kick square in the 'nads. I mean, that's all there is to it, right? Solar plexus and all that jazz?" Max smiled and shook her head.
“There's a little more to it than that,” she said. The elevator stopped and the doors opened, but she hesitated. “If that's what you think, you really should come. You could learn something.” She left the elevator, but waited for BB to follow.
Which she did, noting the subtle invitation with a smile. "I'll think about it. My schedule is kind of all over the place. But you know what we should do," she said, "is have a girl's night. My friend just recently moved into the complex, and she doesn't know anyone, so we could definitely make some connections. Have a pillow fight, paint each other's nails, you could lecture us on self defense and whether Angelina Jolie's ass looks just as amazing in person as it does in pictures?" BB shrugged, walking down the hall at a slow pace as she turned slightly in Maxine's direction, grinning.
Max chuckled at the idea, and oddly found that she wasn’t minding it. “Sounds so girlie and silly and cliche,” she said, spotting her door up ahead. “Let me know when, okay?” She flashed her a smile, stopping in front of her door. “And for the record, I’ve seen much better asses,” she grinned, unlocking her door. “See you around?”
"You better bring a list, then," BB replied, stopping as well and lingering. "With pictures. But yeah, I'll let you know. I gotta talk to my friend, she's on the fourth floor. But then we will do. it. up!"
Max smiled, holding her door slightly open and stepping inside. “I'll see what I can do,” she chuckled. “And you know where I live. Hit me up.” With that she gave her a friendly wave and stepped inside, closing her door and going on with the rest of her morning.
