She startled slightly at the unexpected voice behind her, but relaxed a little when she saw who it was. Her neighbour from across the hall, holding a flute of pink champagne and leaning a little too close in order to be heard over the music. She sighed out the sudden anxiety and smiled wryly, gesturing to the seat next to her.
“It’s complicated,” she said, finishing off her glass and indicating to the bartender that she’d like another. “Abel, right?” she asked in a somewhat friendly tone, though with her mood it was forced. “I didn’t expect to see you here; you didn’t exactly strike me as the cheesy valentines day party type.” Already she was thinking she should have just bought herself a bottle of liquor and got loaded at home instead.
