Who: Isobel & Kate.
What: Kate drops by to thank Isobel for the flowers.
Where: Pax Letale, apartment D3.
When: Feb 2, around 6:30 p.m.
Notes: Completed gdoc!
Isobel was in the middle of dinner prep; Obed was working late, and she told him explicitly to not get fast food, that she'd have something ready for him. She was currently slicing open a sweet potato, with eggs, avocado, and more at the ready. At the very least, everything was going to be prepped so he could just nuke the meal once he got home, but Isobel was interrupted by a knock on her door. Her stomach flipped, excited that it might be one of the neighbors lured over by her simple gift. Putting the knife down on the cutting board and wiping her hands on a towel so not to mar the simple black dress she was wearing, she scurried over to the door and opened it wide.
Kate, wearing a trim black business suit and light blue undershirt, stood in the hallway holding a pink bouquet. “Hi,” she said tentatively. “I was just getting home from work when I saw these. They’re so pretty.” She held up the flowers, paused, and said, “You...you are Isobel, right?”
Isobel nodded in response, a smile playing around her lips. "You're right. Please, do you want to come in for a moment?" She stepped aside, holding the door open wide.
“Oh, just for a moment, sure.” As Kate stepped inside, she continued, “I finished a big project at work today, and finding surprise flowers is a wonderful way to start a relaxing evening.” She smiled warmly at Isobel. “What kind are they?”
"Just liles," Isobel replied as she carefully shut the door behind Kate. Before she could offer more of an explanation, she was interrupted by a yip and the sound of scurrying claws on the hardwood floor. A small black pomeranian approached the newcomer in his space, dancing around Kate's feet as he yipped again.
"Hanni," Isobel warned gently, wincing. She moved around her invited guest to scoop up the small dog, who did not shut up. "I am so sorry, Kate. I hope you're not allergic? I should've said something, but he gets so quiet sometimes. I really ought to think he's up to something, but he's usually pretty well behaved." She scritched his head, and a small red tongue flopped out of Hanni's upturned mouth.
Kate couldn’t help but laugh at the writhing mass of energy in Isobel’s arms. “It’s a good thing I’m not allergic, or even this new apartment wouldn’t be big enough for me and my own two dogs.” Catching Hanni’s gaze, Kate raised the pitch of her voice and said to him, “But you’re much smaller than mine, aren’t you? Yes you are.” She returned her voice to normal and asked Isobel, “Can I pet him?”
"Of course! He loves people." Isobel tipped the small pom forward, toward Kate. "What kind of dogs do you have?"
Kate reached her free hand through long fur and finally found a solid surface to pet. “Two Rottweilers, just coming out of puppyhood. Scilla—technically Priscilla—and Carrie, They grew so fast, so I’m glad I was able to find a bigger apartment here at Pax and move in quickly.”
She gave Hanni one last scratch behind an ear before leaning back. “Speaking of them, it’s just about time for their walk. And I didn’t mean to interrupt your evening,” she continued, glancing at the uncooked dinner ingredients on the counter. “But if you’d like to come visit another time, you’re more than welcome.”
"Oh, you didn't interrupt anything! I'm glad you stopped by. If we're going to be living on the same floor, we should definitely get to know one another. I'd love to meet your dogs." She gave Hanni another scritch, making his eyes close in bliss at all the attention he was receiving. When she stopped, he yipped, but Isobel ignored him. "I'm sure we'll see each other around often enough.
"Ah, I just remembered -- there's a complex event tomorrow. I think it's around six? If that works with your work schedule, anyway," she added, looking hopeful. "They said there'll be food, and it seems like a good chance to see other people we otherwise probably wouldn't even know were there, since this building's so big!"
“Oh yes, I saw the ad for that,” Kate replied, moving toward the door. “I think I will go, actually. I wasn’t sure, but if our other neighbors are half as nice as you, it’ll be worth it.” She opened the door, then lifted up the bouquet in her other hand. “Thank you again for the flowers. It was really nice to meet you.” She looked at Hanni. “And you too, little guy.”
Isobel gently took one of his tiny paws and had Hanni wave goodbye as she herself smiled at the adorable picture. She glanced back at Kate. "I'll keep an eye out for you there!" A thought niggled at the back of her mind that something about the woman seemed so very familiar, but she couldn't place it. She knew for a fact that she and Kate had never met before.
Kate chuckled at Hanni's wave--goodness, she really did have a soft spot for for dogs. As she stepped into the hallway, she felt a small but odd sense of anxiety. At leaving a near stranger's apartment? That didn't make sense. Shaking off the feeling, Kate turned back once more and gave a little wave. “Good night,” she said, and went home.
