Skin I been through, Dies behind me
Who: Henry and Iris
What: Snaaaaaaaakes.
Where: Iris' Apartment, 902
When: Nov 20th, 6:00

Henry Fanning unconsciously tapped his cane to the edge of his boot in rhyme with the music that flowed from his earphones. The elevator stopped with a ping, and he walked out. His anxiety was growing, but he was combating it with good old-fashioned cynical humour. He was going to see a snake, and he rarely handled snakes that weren’t his own. And he’d already handled his snake thinking of Iris, but this was…different.

Not to mention the party; a good thing, but still something to be cautious about. One wrong move and you were forever known as the freak that broke the bathroom mirror and blamed it on the guy who didn’t speak English.

Henry reached her door, and rapped on it with his cane. It was time to avoid getting swallowed, digested and slept off in the sun.

As promised, Iris had brought a baby milksnake home from the zoo, because Katie certainly took some getting used to. The milksnake was in a tank on top of her coffeetable, where as Katie's tank was handmade, and took up an entire wall. There was no missing the six foot long snake, or her cage. Iris opened the door and smiled softly, ushering him inside. "Good to see you again, and I'm sorry about your nightmares. Katie is right over there, wrapped around her water bowl and I brought a baby milksnake home from the zoo, he's on the coffeetable if you'd rather start out with him. Neither are poisonous I assure you."

Henry smiled in greeting, walked in, and took a step back at the sight of the enormous behemoth. "Oh...oh, OK, that's...that's a snake. That's a snake," he said dumbly, deciding against taking any further steps. "Yeah. That's definately a snake. Huh. I'm going to sit down."

He moved to the coffee table, sat down, and almost stood up again. "That's another snake, on the coffee table. I mean, obviously you know where all your snakes are, but still...they are...here. On your table."

"Come sit in the kitchen, there are no snakes in the kitchen, I assure you. The only snakes in the apartment are the two you have just seen." Iris offered her hand to Henry if he needed it, not because of his leg, but because of his fear of snakes. "I promise you that they won't come out of their tanks while you're here unless you say so. Would you like water, soda, juice, anything?"

"Maybe just some water, huh?" asked Henry, taking her hand after brief consideration. "I'm usually OK with things like snakes. I have no trouble with spiders, bugs, that kind of thing. I'm not always an 11-year-old girl from Catholic school."

"I've seen snakes cause grown men to cry. One in particular had to be a football player given his height and build, and he absolutely broke down into tears, running out the door when he came inside the building, so don't feel bad." She led Henry into the kitchen and brought him over to her table, which was snake free as promised. She grabbed a glass and poured him water from a fresh jug in the fridge, handing it over to him.

"On the plus side, he was probably a fast runner," noted Henry with a lightly raised eyebrow. He gulped down the water quickly. "Ahh...so, how does one get...interested...in snakes? I don't know of many little kids who dream about growing up to be a...herpologist? Snake doctor?"

ooc: sorry for the delay, notifs fucked me up.

"My mom is allergic to cats and dogs, and I've always really, really loved animals. I'd take in animals all the time and try to hide them in my room. When I was old enough, I got a job at a local family owned pet store and started my love for reptiles. I could have them without my mom breaking down into endless fits of sneezing, and they always tugged at my heart strings. So many people are afraid of them, and they're so misunderstood like I was. So that's how I got into them."

Henry nodded for a moment, setting down the glass. "Misunderstood. I get that. For most people, they're not exactly cute and cuddly," he said. "People place a lot of value on looks, but that's old news."

He cleared his throat. "Everyone can't wait to save the pandas, but it's the sharks that need saving," he said. "I'd ready save a marvel of evolution as opposed to a Chinese bamboo-junkie that's mystified by its own genitals. Not that I'm for killing pandas or anything..."

Iris nodded with a bit of a laugh. "I know exactly what you mean. Cute and cuddly animals aren't the only ones that should get reprieves, all sorts of animals need help, and sharks are pretty cool actually, I'd give money to save a shark in a minute."
