Hey! So, this is Nicky (10thdoctor), and I'd like to introduce you all to my new character! I'll be completely amazed if anyone has heard of him, but I'm sure you'll all learn to love him just the same!
This is the unnamed narrator of The Third Policeman, which is my new favourite book!
He has a very strange, complicated history... and I'm quite proud of my biography of him, so if you have the patience for the long version, it's his first entry. There is no way I could list every weird thing he believes, so I'll just reveal them through play.
He is a serious student of De Selby, a fictional philosopher who believed among other things that the night is caused by an accumulation of 'dark air', and sleeping is caused by choking on the dark air and passing out. He has written 'The Definite De Selby Index.'
He was seriously poor, so his lodger convinced him to murder this old, rich guy to steal his black cash box. So, since the murder, the narrator has been stuck in his own 'personal hell', where absolutely nothing makes sense.... think Alice in Wonderland but darker and more dangerous. He's searching for the black cash box, but every time he gets close then something even more ridiculous happens. By the time he enters the game... he's going to have been in this ridiculous place for so long that he's going to sound like a complete lunatic... so he'll fit right in!
Oh, and he's in love with his bicycle, who is actually a beautiful woman. Seriously, she is.
I chose Jim Carrey as his PB because his performance in The Number 23 was exactly how I picture the world of The Third Policeman.
And if you couldn't be bothered to read the cut, all you need to know is: murderer with guilty conscience, gone nuts, in love with his bicycle.
Oh, and he comes from the 1940s. I forgot that part. Sorry it's so long, he's hard to condense!
And!! The fact that he's nameless is a plot device, he's actually completely forgotten his name, it's not just me being too lazy to give him one!
