Thea had given him a lot to think about and Oliver had no idea what to do with the information. The two years that she had lived that he had not lived had been full of a lot of tragedy and Oliver was still aching over learning of Laurel’s death. Not that just that though but so many other things, Felicity’s injury, their broken engagement, he felt lost. He and Thea had both agreed that they wouldn’t share what they knew with Felicity or Sara. Neither of them needed to know and Sara had already told him some it, about her death although not the whole story and there was no point in telling her that he knew. He’d wandered along the shore for a while, trying to get his head together and then finally he knew that he had to talk to someone. Someone that he could trust to keep his secrets. It was funny that he’d only known Rose a short time but he felt that way about her. Normally trust was difficult for Oliver, but he knew just enough about Rose to understand that she too had secrets and she would respect his. As he approached her shelter, he hoped that she hadn’t gone to the bonfire. She might very well have but when he got closer, he saw she was there and he smiled. “Hey,” he said. “I see you’re feeling antisocial and skipping the bonfire too.” Rose hadn’t actually meant to skip the bonfire tonight, but she’d spent most of the day helping out with some of the construction, trying to learn more skills that were actually useful here and after washing off in the waterfall, she’d ended up back at the shelter where she’d laid down for a little while and then found herself waking up a while later. She’d been planning to head down anyway, but before she could put that plan into action, she heard the approaching footsteps. Moments later, Oliver had come into view. “More like an unexpected nap,” she admitted with a laugh. She didn’t mention that she’d been about to head down there since he kind of looked like he’d lost his puppy. Or, at least, like he needed a friend. If it was a choice between small talk with people she hadn’t really met yet or being there for someone she’d already started to care about, she was going to take the latter. “What’s up?” she asked, waving him further inside. He’d be welcome to stop by for no reason, but she didn’t think that was what was happening here. She figured he had to have some reason for being here. ‘ He walked in and sat down, sitting Indian style as was his habit and looked up at Rose. “My sister is here,” he said, getting straight to the point. “She just arrived today and she’s two years ahead of me. As in she’s lived two years I haven’t gotten to yet.” Oliver sighed. “It’s kind of a long story but I need to tell someone and I feel like I can trust you. You’ll see why I can’t talk to anyone else about it.” He started then, telling her everything. Sara’s death and Thea’s role in it, Malcolm’s manipulation of Thea, his own fight with Ra’s Ah Ghul and his near death, Damien Darhk, Laurel….it was a good deal later when he finished. “It’s just...so much and then I think about Felicity not being able to walk even though she did get neural implants so that she could, it just hurts. And Laurel….she was my first serious girlfriend, my first love I guess even though I treated her like shit half the time and even cheated on her with her own sister. I can’t tell Sara that her sister is dead, Thea and I both agreed on that and I can’t tell Felicity either. I just….I had hoped that things got better from the point where I left but it seems they just got worse.” Rose sat down across from him so they were face to face as he started speaking. She nodded when he mentioned his sister, having seen that earlier, before she’d laid down. Forcing herself to be patient, she’d just listened as he explained everything, her heart breaking a little more for him with every piece of his future he divulged. It had meant a lot to her that he trusted her with all of it, but she didn’t know what to do now. How could she possibly make any of it better for him? When he mentioned Laurel, her heart broke a little more. He hadn’t done quite to her what she’d done to Mason, but it was enough of a similarity that she could empathize perfectly with how that had felt. Rose moved onto her knees and leaned forward, wrapping her arms around him then. She didn’t know what else to do. There weren’t any words she could say that could take away the pain of what he’d learned today. All she could do was try to offer him some comfort. “I’m so sorry, Oliver,” she mumbled against his neck as she hugged him. He returned her hug, enjoying the comfort of someone to hold onto. He hadn’t always been able to do this, he’d tried to do everything on his own but the last two years of his life had shown him that it was okay to lean on other people. Although it sounded like he’d simply gone back to old habits and in trying to protect those he loved, he’d ended up pushing them away. After a moment he pulled back but not completely and nodded. “Thank you for listening. I couldn’t keep it all inside, I had to talk to someone and I know we haven’t known each other that long but something tells me that I can trust you. I know Thea is right too, we can’t tell Sara or Felicity about any of it. Sara had told me her part of the story, about dying and coming back but she didn’t tell me who had killed her and now I see why. She didn’t want me to have that burden.” “You can trust me,” she assured him. She noticed that his arms were still half around her. Her hands had slipped down so they were resting against his chest and she didn’t really make any attempts to put any more distance between them. It wasn’t exactly an intimate position, but it was nice to be this close to him. It felt good to know he was this comfortable with her. “I think you’re right,” she added after a moment. “Telling either of them would only hurt them. It’s not like they could do anything about it. Maybe if they decided to go home, it would be a good idea to warn them what’s coming, but here?” She shook her head. “If it was one of my friends, I don’t think I’d tell them, either. I wouldn’t want them to have that burden.” It was empathy and understanding more than sympathy in her eyes as she looked up at him. “You can talk to me anytime, though. I promise I won’t say anything to anyone else.” She knew he wouldn’t be here if he didn’t trust her, but she felt like she wanted to say it anyway. She wanted him to know he really could trust her with anything. “Thank you,” he said simply. “I know that and I hope you know that it’s the same with me. If you need to talk to someone, you can come to me. It goes no further.” Oliver was surprised at how easy it was to trust her despite the difference in their ages. He had a feeling that Rose’s story might not be all that different from his own, she’d clearly had to learn to fight but he wasn’t going to ask her. If she wanted to tell him, then she would but until then,, he’d respect her silence. Rose nodded, thinking about how much she had wanted to confide things in him. There was so much she hadn't told anyone here. Even when she'd sort of opened up to Finnick and Jim, she'd left a lot of the finer points out. The training to keep the existence of the supernatural a secret was too deep. Even if she hadn't known about the alchemists before going to Russia, she'd understood the importance of hiding what she and Lissa were from the human world. “It's weird, but I do know that, even though we haven't known each other for very long. I do trust you, Oliver.” She knew she should probably show that, tell him something real about herself and her life, but it didn't feel like the right time. He'd come here upset about things his sister had told him and she didn't want to make it about her, not now. “Sometimes it just happens that way,” he said quietly. “I’m really glad I said something to you that day on the network, Rose.” Oliver smiled. He wouldn’t have guessed that a casual conversation could have turned into what he was already considering a friendship. The thing was that he was having a hard time thinking of it as merely that. He was attracted to Rose even though he knew it was crazy and definitely not a good idea for either them given their ages but Oliver Queen didn’t stand on tradition very often so before he could change his mind, he leaned in and kissed her, gently brushing her lips with his, giving her the choice to stop or to make it something more. “Me, too,” she said, returning his smile with one of her own. She meant it, too. Between him answering her post and sitting down next to her at last week’s bonfire- she suspected he had a lot to do with her starting to feel more comfortable here. Rose had been thinking about kissing him - really kissing him - since they had sparred, but she hadn't acted on it. A part of her hadn't been sure if she wanted to risk the friendship they had been forming. She knew he was kind of with Felicity, too. Sure, it was an open relationship, but she hadn't gotten that comfortable with this place yet. When Oliver leaned in and kissed her, though, all of her logical arguments for staying just friends with him flew out the window. Her hands, which had just been resting lightly on his chest, gripped his shirt to pull him closer as she returned the kiss - gentle and sweet, at first, but then she deepened it into something more eager. He hadn’t known what to expect when he kissed her but Oliver wasn’t disappointed when she deepened the kiss. Instead he pulled her onto his lap where he could reach her better and tangled a hand in her hair. For a split second he felt guilty but then he remembered that he and Felicity had talked about having an open relationship (which really, all of his relationships had been open back in the day even when they weren’t supposed to be) so there was no need to feel that he was doing anything wrong. Oliver lost track of how long they kissed but finally he pulled away to catch his breath and he looked at Rose, pushing a lock of hair off her cheek. “I swear I didn’t come here to tell you my sad tale and get you to make out with me,” he said. It had been weeks since Rose had had a good makeout session. Those were hard to come by in jail and and it wasn’t like Adrian had even come to visit her there. Here, well, she probably could have gotten some action if she’d really wanted, but she’d been hesitant to jump into that part of life here. Random hookups hadn’t really interested her since her academy days and she hadn’t felt enough of a connection with many of the guys here to want to get physical. Now that she was kissing Oliver, though, she couldn’t believe she had waited so long. She went, unresisting, when he pulled her into his lap. It felt good to be close to someone like this again. She hadn’t realized how much she’d missed just being with someone and this was the first pleasurable physical activity she’d head in weeks. She laughed when he pulled away and assured her that this wasn’t why he’d come by. Then she shook her head at him. “I’ve been wanting to do that since our sparring session,” she admitted with a smile. He raised an eyebrow at her. “Oh have you?” and he laughed. “Well okay so I’ll admit that I was a little disappointed when you didn’t kiss me for real that second time. You really did get me, I thought you had changed your mind.” Oliver didn’t often admit when he was wrong but it was the truth, he’d thought she was going to kiss him and he’d fallen right into being tackled. “Although I’d say that we’ve kind of made up for it now.” Rose laughed at his response. “Yeah, you know, just a little. I mean, I wasn’t sure if I should.” That probably sounded kind of stupid, especially considering where they were. She laughed again at his comment about her changing her mind. “I almost did,” she admitted. “It was pretty tempting, but I really wanted to trick you.” And then they’d left to go to dinner. Who knew what would have happened if they had staying there longer. Her smile turned more mischievous as she considered the rest of his words. “I don’t know if we’ve quite made up for it yet,” she teased him. “In fact, I think you should maybe kiss me again, just to be on the safe side. It could take a couple of hours to really make up for me kicking you ass. You might even have to spend the night.” “You know I think that’s a great idea,” he said. “I have no problems kissing you again. And you did hand my ass to me so it’s only fair.” Oliver grinned and kissed her again. |
