Mara had just left the community center and was walking back toward her shelter or at least what would eventually be a shelter, she hoped. Luke had stopped by and had offered her some assistance but it had ended up in a very uncomfortable conversation that Mara just couldn't shake. Instead, she'd gone to the Community Center to get something to eat and that's when she spotted the girl on the beach.
She must be new, Mara thought, because she looked a little lost and she remembered how that felt. At least the snow was gone, it would have probably freaked her out big time if she'd shown up then. It certainly had Mara. Deciding to be friendly, Mara walked toward the girl and when she got closer, she tell that she was round her own age. "Hey," she said. "did you just get here? Welcome to the island. I'm Mara."
