Community Center Gathering Post
Plot Day 2

Snow is still falling and there are no signs that it's going to let up anytime soon.

Probably a safe assumption that there was a giant slumber party in the community center last night. And there's a group hard at work getting some fireplaces built over in the medical center.

More snow. That's what Jim - and everyone else - woke up to. And it didn't look like it was going to let up anytime soon. He had been helping around the day before as needed, spent some time with Mary, and then woke up earlier than he would have liked. But it was just so damn cold.

Needing to take his mind off the cold and the snow, Jim decided to check out the board game selection, newly acquired. He stood in front of the pile and began poking through it. Of course, he'd need to find someone else to play with him, but he figured that wouldn't be a problem.

Of all the things she's thought that she'd find when she came here, a snowstorm wasn't one of them. Ivy wasn't a stranger to heavy snow, she was a New Yorker, after all but snow on a tropical island? That made little to no sense. She'd been at the community center since yesterday when Barry had shown up and brought her here. It was the quickest trip she'd ever taken anywhere and a lot safer than some cab rides she'd been on.

After breakfast she was trying to find something to do and noticed someone standing by the shelf that held the games. Maybe she could convince him to play Scrabble, she thought and headed in that direction, stopping next to him. "If you're interested, I've been wanting to play Scrabble," she said to the man standing there.

Jim stepped aside to make room for Ivy, who was very petite next to him. He smiled at her. "I think I can handle scrabble. Just one question, are we playing English only or can I use Vulcan swear words?"

He held out a hand to her. "I don't believe we've met. I'm Jim."

She laughed and shook his hand. 'I'm Ivy and sure you can use Vulcan swear words if you want. I'll have to trust you that they're spelled correctly since I'm afraid I don't speak Vulcan." She was entirely certain she knew what Vulcan was but she thought it had something to do with Spock whom she'd heard of. So that must mean...."Wait? You're Captain Kirk?"

Ivy eyes widened. He certainly didn't look like the Captain Kirk she'd see from the old TV show but they'd made a new version hadn't they? Well they'd certainly improved on the captain, she thought. This man was gorgeous.

He leaned in like he was telling a secret. "I don't really speak Vulcan either but I find it handy to keep a few choice words in any language in my back pocket, just in case."

Jim was surprised that she knew of him and arched an eyebrow. "That's me," he said "But considering you're not in my crew and my ship isn't here, you should just call me Jim."

Ivy laughed. "Jim it is then. I don't know how well I'd do on the crew of a starship to be quite honest. I'm afraid my career isn't nearly as exciting. I'm an actress, the stage. I've been performing on Broadway for a while now. Nothing that you would have ever heard of being from the future and I'm pretty sure nothing I was in is destined to live that long."

She wasn't ashamed of being in the ensemble but it was time to move up. Unfortunately that didn't seem to be destined to happen so she'd come here. "but if we get really bored during this blizzard, I could always sing."

"Well I sure find the idea that you're an actress exciting," Jim said. He squeezed Scrabble out from between two other games and motioned to a table. "You must be good if you're on Broadway. I don't think anyone would complain if you broke out in song."

[ooc: she did not sleep with the others and is still only wearing a sundress...this thread is outside]

Lailah liked the snow! She had been absolutely charmed by it when it first started to fall. No shoes on her feet and still just wearing a sundress she went out wandering, disappeared for long hours and did not take shelter with the others in the community center.

And she had no idea this might cause some concern for being pregnant.

This was started to look a lot like Hoth, Wedge thought as he stepped outside the back door of the community center. Except for the palm trees and the ocean which were terribly out of place in a blizzard. He was going after some more firewood and was going to check the pipes to make sure that they hadn't frozen. The last thing they needed was to run out of water.

He saw Lailah walking around and shook his head. She should be inside where it was warm and he walked over to her. "You need to get inside," he told her. "being out in the cold isn't good for the baby." Although maybe it was different since she was an angel, Wedge had forgotten that part.

"Oh!" Lailah turned bright eyes and a bright smile to Wedge when she heard him. "Hello, Wedge! Isn't it beautiful?" She lifted her face so that the snow landed on her skin, her smile still firmly in place.

"You know about that?" She lowered her face to give Wedge a quizzical look then chuckled. "Oh yes. Eddie told everyone through the bracelet."

He looked around, seeing it through her eyes. It was beautiful, he couldn't deny that although he was too busy thinking of practical matters at the moment to have really noticed it. "I suppose it is," he said after a moment. "Although it certainly seems strange when you look at the ocean and the trees."

He nodded when she asked how he knew she was pregnant. "Yes, he did. Congratulations to both of you. Pepper and I are having a baby too, the end of next month actually. Time certainly seems to fly."

"It is the combination of the impossible that makes it so special," she said with that innocent look of wonder on her face. "Just like the snowflakes themselves."

"That is wonderful!" Wedge got a full on underdressed angel hug. "I remember when we first met. I would not have thought you would find this so quickly, but I am happy for you."

The hug surprised him but he was happy to return it. Lailah was a sweet person and he well remembered their first meeting. It was kind of hard to forget sex with an angel. "Thank you, I wasn't expecting to either but it just sort of happened."

He released her and smiled. "I'm not sure that I know Eddie. I've seen him on the comms but we've never met. Are the two of you planning to raise the baby?"

Day two and Mary had just about enough of this already. Despite the fact that it had been Christmas at home before she came here, she had been inside and dressed in an evening gown, so even the clothes she had come in were not warm enough. When she had hoped for a break in the heat, this was not what Mary meant.

She did the best she could, and chocked up the fact that she was going to be unproductive and bored until the snow stopped. Instead, she sat by one of the fireplaces in the community center with a blanket wrapped around her and a mug of hot tea at her side. She was grateful that they at least had a few games and books now, and she had picked up Pride & Prejudice to read in an attempt to keep herself occupied.

Clay didn't feel like playing board games. That took a love of socializing that he just didn't have, and a lack of killer instinct that he certainly did. The books looked far more appealing.

He went over to the pile, looking through them, and finally settling on a copy of Les Misérables that he chose because he'd only read it once and there were still parts of it he couldn't remember or recite by rote. Despite his appearance, Clay was actually rather brilliant - aside from being the much-feared enforcer of the North American pack, he was also a college professor with a PhD in anthropology.

Looking at the seat next to the woman, he caught her eye.

"Mind if I sit?" He was within a few feet of her when he spoke, which probably meant that she could feel the heat radiating off of him.

Mary usually enjoyed being social, but when she was irritated, as she was, she needed to take some time to herself. The other man had a book though, so she knew he wasn't there to chat with her and she nodded. "Mr. Danvers, yes? I don't mind." She went back to her book.

About ten minutes later, she realized that she was sweating. Mary unwrapped herself from her blanket and fanned her face with a gloved hand. "I suppose the fire is stronger than I realized. It got very warm rather quickly."

Clay hesitated for a moment, wondering if he should correct her. After all, if she was going to insist on calling him by a title, that was distinctly the wrong one. Instead he just shrugged it aside.

"Clay," he said. "Just Clay."

He sat down quietly and began reading his book, but when she seemed to get too warm, he looked up at her and grinned.

"Or...it could be me. I tend to be a lot warmer than the people around me."

It was very doubtful that Mary was going to call him Clay, at least at this point in knowing him. Mary called everyone by their title until they were close enough to her to no longer warrant it.

She glanced at him when he commented on his body heat. "Really? Warm enough to give off heat? That seems odd. I believe Mr. Rogers has something similar as well."

Steve's was due to that serum he had been given, Mary knew that much.

"Yeah, but his, I think was some sort of experiment. Mine's natural."

Or...supernatural, which he supposed wasn't exactly the same thing. But he wasn't going to disclose that. Back home you had to kill someone if they found out about werewolves, and he didn't want that sort of thing to happen here.

Finnick and Chloe had not slept in the community center like most people, but had still spent most of the daylight hours here. Sort of. Finnick had actually spent a good part of the day outside working with the other guys building a couple of fireplaces and chimneys at the medical center, but he came inside periodically to warm up, and he hoped that Chloe was either napping or occupied enough with other people that she hadn't noticed he was gone so much.

After he came inside from working, Finnick made sure Chloe was still OK, then grabbed a bowl of hot soup and went to find a spot near one of the fires to warm up and entertain himself. He saw some of the board games on a shelf and removed one that said "Monopoly." He set the box down on the table and opened it. It appeared to be full of money. Not Panem money, but maybe money in some other time and place. He looked at it, confused and thinking this must be some mistake.

"Why is this box full of money?" He asked whoever happened to be nearby.

Okay, so snow on a tropical island was beyond weird. She'd slept here last night, cuddled (non-sexually) against as many warm bodies as she could, and she'd been comfortable enough. And hey, it was kind of cozy in here now and it made getting to know everyone much easier. And so far, she liked pretty much everyone she'd met.

She looked over at the guy who had the monopoly board out and grinned. Sam had always called the game 'Monotony', and she thought that was pretty accurate. But she'd come up with a strip version that was a whole lot more fun. Maybe she'd get to play it here sometime.

"Because that's how you play," she said, sitting down next to him with a cute smile. "It's not real money."

"Hi." Finnick smiled back at her. She was one of the new girls and Finnick remembered talking to her on the network. She'd been very forward and open about sex, but that was probably a good thing here. She was also even cuter in person.

"What do you mean that's how you play?" The idea of play money was totally foreign to Finnick and he didn't really get the purpose of it. They'd had little enough of the real stuff in District Four.

"Do you mean it's like gambling with fake money?" They certainly had gambling in District Four. People would wager what little they had, but he didn't see the point of wagering with something that was essentially worthless.

"Well, do you see these little squares around the board?" She pointed to a couple, one at a time. "These are properties. They're streets in Atlantic City, New Jersey, which is a town on the East Coast of North America." Since most people didn't understand that, she'd rather over-explain than under-explain. "And the goal of the game is to buy as many as you can, and to build as many hotels and houses on them as you can, so that when the other players land on them, they have to give you all their money and go bankrupt."

It was really a fairly simple concept, and if you thought of it closely enough, a pretty evil one too.

"Sam - my boyfriend before I - died," that was the only way to explain it - "We had this version we called Strip Monopoly. Basically when you didn't have any money, you could pay the rent by removing clothing. Different pieces of clothing were worth more money than others."

Finnick listened to the explanation. He knew where North America was, but much of the rest was gibberish to him. But there was one part he understood. "So the point of the game is to bankrupt your friends?" He frowned, "No offense, but that sounds pretty terrible. I can imagine something like that being popular in the Capitol, but never in the Districts."

"You died?" She may have mentioned that on the network, but he'd forgotten.

He grinned at first when she started to talk about strip Monopoly, but then got more sober. It was a bit too close to his former reality: those that had money and power demanding sexual performance from those that didn't. "I don't know if that version's really any better."

"Yeah," she said. "I did." But she didn't want to talk about that.

"Well, Monopoly's kind of a terrible game overall. It's definitely not one of my favorites. But getting naked makes it a little more fun."

She grinned. She really didn't have any frame of reference for what Finnick was feeling. Sex had always been fun and consensual for her.
