"Your life sounds quite tragic," Mary said. Losing his father and his mother in a relatively short period of time, being shipwrecked on an island - it was a lot to deal with. "Mine seems quite simple in comparison. My father is the Lord of Grantham, so I suppose we did have it easy. We grew up with money."
Money could not buy happiness, but Mary was fortunate that her childhood was good and that at the end of the day, her family loved each other. Even if she and Edith argued quite a lot, nothing was more important to her than her family.
