WHO Steve Rogers & Natasha Romanoff
WHAT Catching up
WHEN Saturday Morning
WHERE In the forest
WARNINGS TBD, will update if necessary
STATUS Closed | Incomplete

Steve had gone running the same as he usually did. Every morning, he got up and ran along a new path to help him get a feel for the island and what was among the trees that surrounded their new home. There were a lot of animals that roamed the island, many of which tended to stay away from him. That was probably a good thing. He'd already been running for about an hour when he heard her familiar footfalls ahead of him. Steve was honestly excited about it because he'd grown a lot closer to Natasha and he hadn't had a chance to see her after he and Bucky broke everyone out of the Raft. He wanted to make sure that she was okay.

It wasn't long before he crossed paths with her and Steve slowed with a big grin on his face. "Hey, Nat," he greeted warmly. "It's good to see you." He'd heard that she was here from Pepper and Maria, but it was important to see her for himself. He was also somewhat cautious just in case she'd had a bad experience with the previous version of him that had been in Paradiso. It was pretty obvious that he wanted to hug her in his body language, but he would hold it back until she was ready. Until it was something she was okay with.

The last thing Natasha wanted while she was here was to get soft and it would be so easy to do that but she'd kept up a routine as close as her usual one as possible. Running, sparring, working out alone, she felt like she was still in reasonably good shape all things considered. It also gave her the alone time that she craved some days.

She'd been happy that Steve was back but hadn't spoken to him yet. Part of her was afraid to, she didn't want to be disappointed and find out that he didn't remember how close they'd gotten, how much his friendship meant to her even if she didn't come out and say it. It bothered her that she hadn't had that when he was here before or with the version of him that was here before but from what Pepper had said, he was different, he was the Steve she remembered but she still wasn't sure what to say to him which was very unlike Natasha.

When she heard him come up behind her and he spoke to her, she slowed down and stopped. the minute he spoke, she knew. This was the man she knew and she returned his smile with one of her own. "Hey yourself," she said. "it's good to see you too."

The relief he felt was obvious when he saw her smile. Sure, they were very different people in a lot of ways, but they balanced each other out well and he considered her one of his closest friends. He and Bucky had spent years together, side by side, but that same kind of camaraderie and closeness was something he felt with Natasha, too. It would have been devastating if she was distant to him, even though he would have done anything to prove to her that he was more himself this time around.

"Keeping up with your workout routine, huh?" Steve was happy to see that, too. They probably weren't in any kind of danger here, but it was better to be safe than sorry. They'd sparred countless times while they were both stationed in DC, and then training the new Avengers had been an exercise in their friendship that just made their relationship stronger for him.

"I've gotta say, this scenery is a lot better than any of the simulations they cooked up at SHIELD." Or any of the simulations Tony had messed around with, but he was hesitant to bring up Tony Stark after everything. There wasn't any reason to put a dark cloud over this when they'd only just reconnected. "When did you agree to come here?" He had his suspicions, but he wanted to hear it from her.

"Yeah, it's kind of a challenge but I don't mind not having to fight the bad guys so much," she laughed. "and you're right, the scenery is so much better than anything SHIELD has. It's really beautiful here but I also like that I can get lost in the jungle if I need to and sometimes I do." Natasha would always need time like that, it was part of who she was. There were days when the memories were too much and getting away was the only way she could handle it so she tended to wander.

"Arva visited me after Sokovia and when she told me that I could actually have children if I came here, I couldn't turn that down," she looked down at her feet for a moment then back up at Steve. "I've always wanted to have kids, a semi-normal life...this seemed like my chance to have it. After the other you and Bucky left, I got more memories, that happens sometimes and I remember the accords, everything that happened, helping you and Bucky get away....I don't regret it either even though I'm sure I got in a shit ton of trouble for it. How is he, by the way? I know he's safe, you wouldn't have agreed to come here if he wasn't."

If anyone deserved a chance at normal, it was Natasha. Steve was glad to see her laughing, and to hear that she had the freedom she needed to take refuge in the jungle when she needed it. She could thrive here, and Steve honestly couldn't be happier. "I'm glad she found you," he replied honestly. He hadn't known that she couldn't have children, but he understood why she would say yes, especially if it meant having a break from the insanity that was their lives these days.

"He's in Wakanda, under T'Challa's protection," Steve replied. "Cryostasis, but it was his choice and I wasn't going to take that from him after everything else." It still hurt his heart to know that his best pal had been tortured and forced to kill for decades while he'd been trapped in the ice. "I don't know what happened to you, but you weren't in the Raft with the others. Buck and I, we broke them out and I went underground." He'd wanted to find her, but if anything, it would have put her in danger. "I figured you'd find me if you could, or if you wanted to."

He couldn't help looking her over, in part to make sure she was okay. "You're really alright? Happy?" Steve could admit that he was maybe a little protective of her, but that was only because he cared. He wondered if she'd had a child yet, or if she was with child yet, but he honestly wasn't even sure how to ask.

"I thought I'd given up any chance to be a mother a very long time ago," she said softly. "when I was training in the Red Room, the KGB, they didn't give us a choice, we either had to have surgery which rendered us sterile or they killed us. Black Widow Operatives couldn't be mothers, they might get distracted." Natasha shook her head. "it's not something I ever talked about but it's in my files so a few people knew and I told Bruce but then things happened and he left....turns out he came here. For the same reasons I came here but when I got here, he was with Maria and they're having a baby."

She took a deep breath and finally let it out. This was the Steve she knew, the one that understood her and she could trust him so she kept going. "I was pretty surprised by that but Bruce and I are okay now. It's just every now and then I get a little jealous. Not because of Bruce and Maria but because it hasn't happened for me yet. I want to raise the baby when I have one and I want to make sure I'm ready and that I'm with the right person so we'll see." She wasn't really in that big of a hurry although she'd been thinking about it more lately.

"I like T'Challa," she said, changing the subject. "he's a good man and Bucky will be safe with him." Although she hadn't known him long, Natasha had a great deal of respect for the now King of Wakanda.

Steve listened. He'd always been a good listener, but it was hard to hear the things the KGB did to Natasha for the sake of the perfect operatives. His heart broke for her, but he also knew that she was strong enough that she'd find everything she was looking for and then some. It just took time. It meant a lot to him that she would share all of this with him, that she trusted him.

"It's natural to feel jealous, but you'll find what you're looking for," he promised. Steve gave her a warm smile as he clasped his hands behind his back. Otherwise, he was probably going to hug her and he wasn't sure if she was ready for that. "Everyone seems very...welcoming. I didn't think I'd enjoy that part of being here, but it isn't so bad," Steve added with a chuckle, thinking of his time in the waterfall with Lustre. There was a very small thought, in the very back of his mind, that wondered what if, recalling the kiss she'd laid on him at the mall, but this wasn't the time.

"Bucky's safe," he agreed with a nod. "And I was a fugitive back home. I wanted to do good, away from the mantle of Captain America." If anyone could understand, it was Natasha. "It was too good of an opportunity to pass up, to come here and help create a new society. I wasn't so sure how I'd do with the Sex Island part but-" he shrugged, "I've always been a pretty fast learner."

Natasha grinned. "I'm not going to ask you who gave you your Sex Island lesson. The open relationship stuff is a little different, people still have sex with others even when they're having a baby together but it seems to work." She personally hadn't had sex with anyone who was having a baby with anyone else but that didn't mean it wouldn't happen. Or that she wouldn't do it herself if she got pregnant. For a quick second, she let herself wonder what would happen if she and Steve...no, don't go there, she told herself. He'd probably never even thought of it and would be surprised that she had.

"Have you met your twin yet?" she asked with a raised eyebrow. "Nick? He's interesting. I like him though after spending some time with him, I can see that you don't really look that much alike. I was afraid that I'd call him 'Steve' by mistake but nope, you're very different. But in a good way." Natasha enjoyed spending time with Nick, he was fun and the sex was off the charts but Steve didn't need to know that.

He grinned in response. "Thanks for that," he replied, half teasing. It was different, being so open with people, but Steve was confident he would figure out his way. He would never want to get in the way of a relationship, particularly if a couple chose to keep the baby as opposed to giving the child up to Arva, but that was probably something that would come up on a case by case basis. And if Natasha ever asked him to father her child, he'd say yes in a heartbeat no matter what. She was one of his best friends and she had a special place in his heart, even if - back home - that hadn't been more than partners on the field.

"I did meet Nick, yea. He was kind of defensive at first, but I got him to come around. Pepper, too." He was aware of some of the things the previous version of him had done, but the important part was that people seemed to be willing to give him the chance to prove he was different. Part of that was going to be building a crib for Pepper and Wedge's child, which he'd already started on. It was a bit of a learning curve, but he was doing his best. "He's a nice guy, and you could do a lot worse." He was smart enough to read between the lines, because if she was worried about saying the wrong name, it probably had something to do with sex.

"It is good to know I'm not so easily replaced," Steve added with a small smirk.

"Yeah, things got kind of messy with Pepper and the other Steve. It was really strange, he basically told her that he had to ask Bucky. Neither of them ever came out and said it or even showed it in public but I see things and my shelter is kind of behind where they lived, I'm certain there was something between them. I kind of mentioned it to Bucky and I thought he was going to hit me with a two by four." she shook her head. "the truth is that I was just glad they were happy even if they kept away from everyone else and didn't talk to many people. As it was, I talked more to Bucky than the other you."

It had been a strange situation but she had gotten used to it. "It's good to have the you that I remember back though. I missed you." Even if she hadn't actually lived the events that she remembered now, she didn't question the decision she'd made to help Steve and Bucky. Natasha had been on the run before so she didn't mind the idea of that either. "somehow I bet that back home we managed to find each other again. I mean, hell, we found each other here, didn't we?"

It was still so bizarre to him that he and Bucky'd been in a sexual relationship so exclusively that he couldn't even father a child with someone he considered a good friend. It was also very alarming to hear that Natasha thought Bucky would do her harm when he was in his right mind. "That must've been hard," Steve replied, sympathetic to what she'd been through. He was here now though, and he really needed to hug her. He'd felt a lot better after hugging Pepper, too, but Natasha was different.

"I'm sure you found me because I wasn't being quite as sneaky as I thought I was," Steve replied, trying to make light of the situation. "I'm glad we found each other, and if it's not to much to ask, I could really use a hug from one of my best gals." He opened his arms invitingly, but he also knew that he'd go to her in a heartbeat if she'd rather not be the one to come to him. Steve never questioned any of it, he just went with it because it was Natasha. She'd been through some serious Hell, same as Bucky, and she'd come out the other side an amazing woman that he was lucky to know. Let alone to know that she had his back.

She couldn't help but smile when he offered her a hug. "Rogers, sometimes you are just too cute," she said with a laugh but she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him. It felt good to be held by someone familiar, someone who had shared her experiences, who understood her. She didn't lack for human contact here but this was different, this was like home and Natasha hadn't realized how much she had been thinking about it.

"Well however you got here, I'm glad you did," she said, looking up at him. "it'll be nice to have a regular running partner again." She wished she could just come out and say that she missed him but she couldn't. It was true though, she had and she was glad that this was the man she remembered.

"I'm always too cute," he replied, enveloping her in a big hug. He may have held on a little too tightly a little to long, but Steve wasn't interested in letting go just yet. This was Natasha and he got her. He didn't always agree with her, but he could at least know that he'd always understand her logic. And when it came right down to it, she'd been on his side in the end. He'd never hold that against her.

"You are better at keeping up than Sam. By maybe a little," Steve replied, still not ready to let her go. "Okay, I'm going to let go now, but I think this needs to be a regular thing." He held onto her for a long moment before finally letting go. "I didn't realize how good hugs were." Steve had always been a tactile guy, but the Army and then SHIELD had helped him repress it over the years. After his afternoon at the waterfall, he was beginning to find that part of him again and he was glad for it.

"You're gonna start wanting to kick my butt on the regular again aren't you?" he asked with a teasing smirk. Natasha could beat him any day of the week and twice on Sundays, but he was getting better. Maybe he'd learn a couple new things on the island that didn't have anything to do with sex.

"And modest," she laughed. Natasha didn't mind that he held on, in fact she liked it. Since coming here, she'd learned to be more open to such things as touching and trusting. Besides it didn't matter with Steve, she already trusted him with her life.

"I'm all for making this a regular thing," she said and stepped back. "SHIELD needs to include hugging in their training, it would at the very least throw off the bad guys if we hugged them." Natasha could only imagine what a HYDRA agent would do if they suddenly found themselves being hugged.

"There's no doubt I'll want to kick your ass but I might let you win every so often." It would be nice to work out with him again, they always had a good time and it seemed less like work that way. "I'm headed back to camp, you want to come or are you going to run around in the jungle a little longer?"

Steve grinned, glad to see that her sense of humor was still in tact, especially around him. There wasn't any bad blood between them, and that was more reassuring than anything. He had her back, and she'd have his, and it was one of the few familiar things in Paradiso that he wasn't even going to think to question. He was just grateful for it, and it showed in how loose and relaxed he was. Paradiso had already done wonders for him in terms of getting him to loosen up and he was looking forward to the time that was going to be spent in paradise.

"I'll head back with you. I'm working on getting a shelter built for myself and I'm thinking of getting to work on building a few more shelters, just so there are a few empty ones ready for new arrivals." It had been something he'd thought about ever since he arrived because it just seemed like the right thing to do, especially when it seemed like people were arriving on a sort of regular basis. It'd at least keep him busy aside from the sex he was supposed to be having.

Steve turned toward the path, feeling a lot more settled as they made their way back to camp.
